The Cubs won't care what he hits. They know what they're getting. He was brought in to stabilize the pitching staff, for his veteran leadership, and his clubhouse presence - not his bat. Any offense they get from Kendall is a bonus. This is the kind of intangible move that can pay big dividends.
It also opens the door for Kurt Suzuki in Oakland, and the A's also got a promising pitcher. Both teams made out very well with this deal.
