In 35 innings for Texas. The first time he's pitched that many innings in 3 years. And since coming to Boston he hasn't pitched close to those stats so far. He's a washed up ex-juicer.
The guy was undrafted and failed for years trying to crack the Dodgers rotation. Suddenly he's got an extra 5 mph on his fastball and becomes an elite closer. The year steroid testing starts he suddenly becomes chronically injured for two years, and now his fastball is back down to what it was when he was a starter. Dodgers fans have known for years that he's a juicer: http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_6531804
He hasn't been healthy all year; he was on the DL for a big chunk of the season already.
Lots of quality young players were unheralded as prospects. The Yankees signed Tony fucking Womack to play 2B for 2005 because they didn't think anything of Robinson Cano (or Chien Ming Wang for that matter). Gabbard doesn't have electric stuff but he knows how to pitch and has shown that he can get AL hitters out. Lots of scouts have compared him to a young Jimmy Key. I don't think Epstein is looking at this as a rental either; I suspect he thinks he can resign Gagne to be the closer next year and move Papelbon to the rotation (which I've said would be a stupid move all along). Papelbon has established himself as an elite closer and shouldn't be touched.
Heh, the record was 61*, so enough people did. Seriously, though in 1920 Babe Ruth hit more home runs by himself then any other team by himself. Using aggregate numbers to suggest who the greatest baseball player would tell us that Pete Rose is the greatest hitter of all time. I'm more impressed with Bond's 275 ops+ in 2002, then his career total home runs.
Because people hated Maris and wanted Mantle to get the record.
Phils down 6-1 in the top of the 9th inning against the Brew Crew and the cable goes out. I just figured they lost but I find out later that they won 8-6 in eleven innings.
Adam Eaton still belongs in prison.
No asterisk was ever affixed to Maris' record. During the 1961 season, Commissioner (and famed Ruth nuthugger) Frick suggested that two records should be kept - one for the 154 game season and one for the 162 game season - if Maris needed the additional games to break or tie the record. I do not believe this suggestion was ever seriously followed.
No one - literally no one on earth - thinks this made Maris a better ballplayer than Ruth.
Yanks are now tied for the Wild Card, unbelievable.
I sincerely hope the Yankees grab the Wildcard.
