I wonder if they're thinking leaving blizzard was a good idea.
Well this game never felt like a PSO clone to me anyway. Maybe they'll pick some of them up with two new games coming out.
So besides the fact that the game was kind of boring, what was so horribly wrong/broken with it that other people who put more time into it complained about?
Well it's one of those games that NEEDS new content on a somewhat regular basis or else it becomes stale. Fun at first, but with nothing new it was doomed to fail. I had no real problems with it, it just lives and dies by party support and new content.
I have played through Diablo II around eight times since Hellgate came out, so I'm trying to figure out why Hellgate gets stale and DII does not.
There's a few reasons, and I would say the biggest one is that the variable feedback system that is extremely strong in Diablo 2 does not exist at all in Hellgate. You can keep running zones in D2 looking for better loot, but due to the way upgrades work in Hellgate, you can always keep your gear near-optimal regardless of what you find, which makes trying to find better gear useless.
There's also the fact that Hellgate goes through all of its content way too fast (by the end of act I you've seen nearly all of the zone themes). This also has a bit of an effect on the game itself, as while D2's zones were themed and you could plan for optimal gear (ie: lots of zombies in act II and lots of demons in act IV), in Hellgate you just got random monsters at random times, so trying to customize gear was nigh worthless.
That and the game was extremely unfinished when it was released and left a terrible impression on a lot of people. You know the backlash some games get when they're hyped to be the best thing ever and they just end up being good? Well this game was hyped to be the best thing ever by the press at the time and it ended up being pretty bad, which made it look even worse.

Hellgate: London will apparently continue on as a free-to-play title according to IP owner HanbitSoft, reports Gamasutra. Namco-Bandai planned to pull the plug on the servers January 31, but HanbitSoft asserts the game will push forward. Forward and upward, allegedly, as the Korean publisher plans to update the game and strengthen community features.
The first patch HanbitSoft plans to release "soon" will combine the game's two modes, along with balancing game and class issues. Could the title that helped bring down Flagship Studios find an audience in the nurturing arms of the Korean developer?
