I'm not ashamed to admit it: I've never played a FF game, and have no plans to.
I don't usually like RPGs - in fact, the only ones I've ever played are Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Skies of Arcadia, and Shadow Hearts.
Parasite is farking incredible!!! But it isn't really an RPG. And neither is Vagrant Story, but it is excelent.
Good taste man! SoA too? You might not play RPGs, but when you do you certainly know how to pick them. :)
I've played through the original (you can't possibly tell me that one has good character design) and all the PSone and PS2 variants.
I think the stories and characters seem to get more and more obnoxious every year, though IX would have to be my favorite thanks to it's light-hearted approach. And I hate that melodramatic idiot, Kuja (who I hope was a satire on how shoddily written most RPGs are).
Well, Speaking about Summons:
Diablos and Odin for me. Too kick ass looking summons. Especially Odin, who would come at ramdom, and totally anihilate your opponents in one clean swing of the mighty sword :)
Havent seen FFX summons yet, as I only starting playing it.
And yes, Bio has a good taste in RPGs. Especially with PE, VG and Shadow Hearts :)
Considering the memory and other limitations of the NES, I think the characters were pretty amazing.Quote:

I'm also a huge FF fan.
Played all the games, including messing about in never-released-here NES games. Along with the Street Fighter series, the FF games are probably my favorite series of all time.
The one and only FF game that I've never finished was FF9. For some reason the game just didn't "click" with me. I remember being completely enamored with the screenshots, and concept art of 9 before the game came out, but when I finally played it, I just kinda lost intrest around 15 hours.
Since then I've tried to replay it two or three times but still haven't been able to finish it...
My favorite post-16bit FF is X. I was simply amazed with that game. There was so much that I just loved. The only thing that could of made it better was a Triple Triad mini-game! On a related note I can't WAIT for the FFX side story games! *does a little dance*
I don't think I could pick a favorite of the SNES FF games, they are just to near and dear to my heart to pick I fave.
And don't even get me started on FFT, that's easily my favorite PSone game of all time...
Cactuar rules you all btw!!
I am an enormous fan of Final Fantasy 1, 2, 5, and 6. However, I was completely disgusted with the change in direction of 7, 8, and 9. So much, in fact, I really can't find one good thing in any of those games. As for 10, I thought it was pretty freaking good. And the next installment...well...bleh.
In what way? They were basic archetypes of the fantasy genre and they had no personalities to speak of.Quote:

Thanks Cap'n, but wait a sec - you wouldn't call PE or VS RPGs? How come? They've got random combat, levelling up, "dungeons", stat improvement, item collecting, complex character-driven plots....what are they missing? The only RPG convention I can think of that they don't contain is a party...unless I'm missing something obvious.
I'd kill for a sequel to PE or VS (heck, Skies too!).
One thing that turns me off from RPGs is their length, and since I don't have a lot of time for gaming, I have to be super picky. :)
Although Xenogears and Chrono Trigger are my favorite Square RPG's, I have always enjoyed the Final Fantasy series, especially VI and VII.
But since I'm not a hardcore RPG guy, I still haven't bought IX or X.
