I really liked FF4 and 6 but the characters seemed to become too predictable in the recent editions. I'm not saying that Cecil, Vivi or Edgar were inventive and incredibly deep, I just enjoyed them more than I did the characters of 7 or 8. I think it's the "teenage agnst" lead that bores me (see Cloud or Squall and maybe this new guy from X, I forget his name) and makes it easier for me to not care about their problems or development. "Waaa waaa I'm lonely but can't express myself!" Let's get past this crap =P
Then again, perhaps it's the setting that's most important to me and the future/past mix in some of the games turns me off. The games I did like were set in a primarly fictional "past", without the excessive use of technology. FF6 was set in a world with magically powered machines, but they weren't over used IMHO. I just got a PS2 and FFX so I'll have to reserve judgement on it until I finish GT3 and get a chance to play it =) Though it seems to be on the 'techno' side to me, and the voice acting is good and totally unexpected. I still have to get used to hearing the characters talk.
These are just quick thoughts, but my enjoyment has little to do with something being 'cool' (I do own a PS2 and like GTA3 so now I *must* be cool =P) and more to do with my personal tastes. Granted those tastes do typically include more things obscure or less popular than the latest fads. But that's just me.

Whenever someone posts about how much they hate Final Fantasy, I don't believe them. Everything about the production is too tight, from graphics to music to design to gameplay (yeah, you heard me). VIII was pretty lame, but the others were all excellent (okay, I've never played 2 or 3), and there's really no question that it's the top rpg series. Some may have another favourite series because, I don't know, they like characters with blue hair or something, but anyone saying they're bad games is just trying to look cool.
FF is a great game, everyone should like it.
I can't say I can extend the same enthusiasm for the series as I did during the SNES era. FFVII I was rather lukewarm on, FFVIII and FFIX bordered on tedium for me, and I just didn't enjoy FFX one bit.
I still enjoy playing through FFV and FFVI every now and then, I'm currently working a bit on FFIIj PSX and I'd really love to see the FFIIIj remake come to fruitation, but I've learned to let go of the modern wing of the series over time and seek out other RPGs that are trying to be a bit more progressive. I don't need to berate people for thinking FFX is the greatest RPG ever - If they find what they enjoy in the game, that's good enough for them.
I adore Final Fantasy most of the time. It's really got the best stories and style in video games today. The Final Fantasy "universe" has become so mature and developed, whole books and movies could be created based on it. It's at least as expansive as universes like Star Wars or Tolkien's middle earth. Every new FF is a thrill because it takes you through that universe on a new adventure, with great writing and characters. It's not a gameplay thing at all, which is why it's perfectly legit not to like the series... but to call it crappy or low-quality it just bullshit.
Actually, my main beef with FFX was because it was exactly the opposite of everything you just said here. It had some great gameplay (of what was there), but the characters and writing were some of the most horrid in any RPG in existance. Oh, and it's also the opposite of your earlier comment about style. And maturity. And development.Quote:

But when they get it right, they do it damn well.
[edit] They just need to get rid of these angsty teens. Unless it's a personal friend, I sure don't want to hear them in real life and definately don't want to read or watch about them in fiction. Maybe Tidus should just have written poetry about how hurt he feels. All gothic-like.
Chocobos and Moogles and summons stolen from common mythology are the equal of...
nevermind. I violently disagree with you TK :P
Umm, you will be hard pressed to find any fictional universe that does not borrow heavily from other source material, if such a thing exists.Quote:

And chocobos and moogles are among my favorite video game characters ever.
MechDeus: Actually, I don't have a PS2, so I have not played FFX. I've heard VERY mixed stuff about it from equally reliable sources, so I have no idea if I will love it or if it will be a repeat of FF8 (which was the only game in the series that sucked, and it sucked HARD). But a lot of people make similar claims about FF7 and FF9, both of which I think have some of the best stories in any games ever.
I don't like story-telling in video games. Above all, Final Fantasy seems to be about the telling of a story - the game mechanics, everything, seems to be subservient to the story to a level beyond most other video games, which is why I dislike the series so much.Quote:

I haven't really found anything in a Final Fantasy game that would be worth playing or enjoying if you excised the story/text/CG from it...so the series is a failure, in my opinion.
