April 11, 2007 - Put on your skeptical goggles because rumors are swirling that StarCraft 2 is finally a reality. The Team Liquid forums have translated an article from Korean site Fighter Forum that says StarCraft 2 is on the way and a beta will be released at the end of 2007.

According to Fighter Forum, StarCraft 2 continues the story of the original and adds a new race based on Kerrigan, making a total of four races. While that wouldn't be totally off the mark, we figured the new race would be more the super-race mix between Zerg and Protoss rather than Zerg and Terran or at least the mystically advanced Xel'Naga. The three older tribes will each be receiving around two additional units.

The report also claims that Blizzard plans to shut down its original StarCraft servers in order to ensure the success of the sequel.

As popular as StarCraft was on these shores, it doesn't come close to the enthusiasm the game still enjoys in Asia, where televised, professional matches are held regularly. Blizzard has an event coming up in Korea where they are expected to make a large announcement, so it could very well be that the company has chosen the area where StarCraft is the most popular to announce its sequel.

As of this writing, Blizzard could not be reached for comment.

I kind of hope it doesn't. There's just no chance of it living up to StarCraft. And while tl.net is the premier StarCraft site for Westerners, that particular thread and this rumor are just dubious. I don't read Korean but Fighter Forum doesn't exactly have ties with Blizzard, either.

Shut down what servers? Starcraft uses battle.net, and the actual game is handled peer to peer. Bogus article, imo.

There were vaguely credible rumors of Diablo 3 a few months back.. Which is it, OMG.

It wouldn't make sense for Blizzard to make Diablo 3. Not only from a business standpoint, but also due to the fact that that whole team is gone and now about to release Hellgate: London.

Unless they go and buy them back and rename it Diablo: London....OMG.

The chances of there being a beta by years end are, IMO, next to nothing. I mean look how long it took them to get BC out the door. I highly doubt Blizzard has the time or resources to be working on a title this large right now, especially for it to be that far into development. But, hopefully I'm horribly wrong.

Oh, and there's no way Blizzard would just add a new race and 2 new units to each race. Thats more akin to an expansion pack than to a sequel. I mean look how radically they changed Warcraft from II to III.

I hope they don't implement the Hero system into SC like they did in WC3. I thought that idea was silly. I hope all the races are overhauled and we get new everything.

Starcraft is my favourite game ever, and imo, once all the patches were in and everything was balanced out, the best game ever made ever. I still play it all the time, and some of the campaign levels STILL give me trouble because I'm dick at micromanaging battles while continuing construction on things.

They could honestly reskin SC and I'd buy it all over again. Or release more missions.

This is the best possible news ever. Every year for Christmas I ask for another Starcraft. Someday before I turn 25, it seems like it'll be a reality. Life is sweet.

StarCraft is probably my favorite game also, I played pretty hardcore in high school. Haven't kept up with the progaming scene etc. or even played since then but the original (with Brood War of course) was truly unfuckwithable. Really hope they don't screw this one up because it would be just too easy to. The 3D thing is already one misstep imo.

It's not going to live up to expectations because it won't be the same exact thing, there will be a lot of bitching about how terrible it is and how Blizzard has failed and swearing off the series, and after a while of balance patching it will go from good to great but most will dismiss it anyway and talk about how awesome the old days were while playing neither one.

Well people shit on WoW at the beginning justifiably because they essentially released an incomplete game with some classes being grievously gimped and without many of the advertised features.

The only bad thing they could do to Starcraft is reduce the amount of units you could have at once and introduce upkeep like in Warcraft 3. I always liked the idea that WCIII, with heroes and limited units, became about micromanaging battles. I also liked how Starcraft was about having lots and lots of units whose attack type trumped other unit's armor type. That way you can still have strategic conflicts and large numbers of units fighting at once.

Actually I thought the game was just taking a whole different approach, smaller amounts of stronger units as opposed to mass amounts of weaker units. Giving it a completely different feel from Starcraft, which I thought was a valid way to go about and keep franchises of the same genre from one company different.

I cannot contain the raging boner I'm sporting because of this news.

That was how it felt to me as well, especially considering that during the WC3 beta we would have LAN peon battles that were something like 50 vs. 50 affairs (I think I still have the screenshots somewhere). It seemed like a good way to make sure it was seperate from an eventual SC2, which came across as more about large armies in the first place.

Played at anything near a high level, StarCraft requires just as much micro as WarCraft 3 except you still have to macro at the same time and the micro arguably requires more skill because the units have less HP. Also, in StarCraft the emphasis is on a bunch of skirmishes on different parts of the map at the same time; something that just isn't possible in War 3.

This news makes me wanna kaboom in somethings anus...

Yeah I thought of Starcraft as much more Micromanaging than War3.

The micromanagement in War3 is so much easier since the units have about 10 times the amount of hit points. It's a lot harder to keep units in SC alive since you have so little time to get them out of harm's way.

No. The Warcraft 3 engine can display thousands of things at once on any computer that can run it.

Upkeep keeps the average Warcraft 3 game to around 10-15 minutes instead of the hour-long epics that were usual in RTS games, and it forced you to use your small army intelligently with strong micromanagement. It is one of the best features in RTS game design history, even if it will probably never be used again.

The engine might be capable but the computers Blizzard was aiming at were much older and thus less likely to be able to run the game properly.

The average StarCraft games is twenty minutes. Upkeep is stupid. Of course, this is assuming that once your opponent loses he actually quits instead of making you destroy all his buildings.

WC3 is great.

Starcraft is great.


They're different games. And therefore they play differently. I think the hero system and the upkeep system implemented in WC3 were excellent and fit well into Warcraft. Those systems wouldn't work as well in Starcraft though, and I'm assuming that Blizzard knows that.

If SC2 is released in a form that is compatible with e-sports broadcast, there will be many new gamers and the entire industry will develop. However if it comes out in a form that is not easy to broadcast, like WarCraft 3, StarCraft fans will focus on the sequel while the original league will suffer a decline", expressing a cautious mindset.

Rumor. Just like the OMG Starcraft 2 and OMG Diablo 3 stories. I wouldn't be surprised to see a more MMO style to Starcraft, but I very much doubt it's going to be a full MMORPG.
