Don Imus Makes People Angry, Gets Fired

You know, in hanging around TNL and being generally desensitized by most everything by the internet (thank you Josh), I didn't give too much thought to Imus calling the Rutgers team a bunch of Nappy Headed Hoes. God knows it's not the first time that insane buzzard has said an deeply offensive off-color remark on his show. Maybe I'm just biased because I like his show, but his general mean-spirited, cantankerous remarks amused me and this all seems like a massive over-reaction. Either that or its just the culmination of all the negative shit he and co-hosts have spewed off in the past.

In any case: Discuss.

Imus says a stupid throw away comment as a joke and loses his 40 year broadcasting career, while Michael Richards says something far worse over and over again and walks away relatively clean.

I listen to free fm in new york and they've pretty much blown up about this, every single show is talking about it nonstop.

Well, I think that just like the Richards case, Imus was trying to be funny and failed miserably. I even wonder why people wont even consider giving him props for trying to tie in a Spike Lee movie reference (School Daze). Imean anyone that would go that far for a joke cant simply be racist. Racists don't go that far to make an insult at a race.

All the same when Bill Maher got kicked off for saying something stupid, I felt well thats too bad cause he seemed like he slipped up while trying to say something in a crazy political roundtable madness show. If Imus gets kicked off, I feel that he kinda deserves it cause he makes his career out of being a jerk. Its the old "dont be suprised when the domesticated tiger...blah blah....eat baby...blah blah..." deal. Too much media hooplah and such? Maybe. But I always see shock jocks as skating around thin ice too much anyway (even tho they are paid to do so. Lets be real now).

the government didnt censor him, private companies did, bit of difference. the government cannot censor what you are saying(except in cases of national security..at least in theory), but if the company that you are working for decides you are going to hurt their bottom line, they are under no obligation to keep you around to drag them down. He's not a bigot, though. The comment was clearly made in humor, an old white guy attempt to talk like the rappers that most of the girls on the Rutgers team probably have on their fucking ipod anyway.

Yeah, it seems a bit ridiculous. Do they really care that much about what some jackass on the radio said? Then everybody's going on about how mature and wonderful they are. That may be, but it seems a bit patronizing, to me, anyway.

Imus' firing will not be the watershed moment for us to have some race debate. Most people just don't want to talk about it. A month from now, we'll be right back where we started.

A podcast you might consider listening to, from New York radio critic Allan Sniffen, that I basically agree with. Recorded prior to Imus being let go at CBS.

At least it appears the Radiothon will be continuing, albeit with a much smaller audience, I guess. The WFAN (the station Imus' show originated from) website has Mrs. Imus and Charles McCord in Imus' old timeslot.

Frankly, I'm surprised it wasn't some gay activist group going after Imus, considering how often the words "homo" and "queer" got thrown around on there (more often from his producer than himself). I always felt it was a bit "cringeworthy," but I didn't really take him too seriously.

No, he was commenting on the fact that they're women and not completely feminine and weak. He does this all the time, and specifically with black women athletes. He's a bigot. This isn't an isolated incident, and it's far from the worst thing he has ever said on air. Why, suddenly, this causes an uproar is the only thing that surprises me.

Imus doesn't think before he speaks and nowadays that's really just a recipe for trouble. Most people have handlers, producers and time delays to keep this shit from blowing up, but not Imus. He's a holdover from a bygone era, and he's dodged one bullet too many.

You can all say it's wrong that people are upset, but don't make the mistake of bitching at the radio station (WFAN, I think) or FreeFM. They're just businesses who answer to their customers and their advertisers.

I realize the government has nothing to do with anything. People are fucking hyper sensitive these days about anything that comes out of someone's mouth that is politically incorrect. What happened to being allowed to speak your mind (in humor or in earnst) without having to look over you shoulder after you say it? Truth is, these are *words* and they can't really hurt anyone unless they let it. Why would I give a fuck about what Imus thinks of me? Fuck him. And fuck me if my skin isn't thick enough to take a joke or let his words bring me to tears.

This whole thing is a complete fiasco. And I don't listen to Imus at all. The guy has done huge amounts of charity work for many, many organizations and doesn't deserve to thrown on the barbeque like that guy's girlfriend was. And I'm sick of Sharpton and Jackson jumping on the bandwagon and soon as some white dude says something they don't like. Black people *REALLY* need better leaders than those two scumbags.

They show up at CBS headquarters to protest before Imus was fired on the same day the Duke lacrosse players that they wanted to hang have all chargers dropped. I forgot that only nappy headed hos could be done wrong.

I saw Slick Willy whining about this too. When three of the biggest morons on the planet agree on something, I don't even need to know what the issue is to know that the other side is the right one.

As I said in the Howard thread, I'm surprised that Howard predicted that he would be fired on Tuesday. I thought he was crazy for saying that--no way was Imus going to get fired for that comment. CBS didn't even wait for the two week suspension to fire him.

It was a small, vocal minority of a minority that made a stink. These were people who DIDNT LISTEN TO IMUS TO BEGIN WITH. Where are the Sharpton and Jackson rallies for record labels to drop the mysognistic, violent "artists" that fill the hip-hop music industry? Why are black kids harrased at school for trying to learn, while drug dealers who buy $20,000 rims are idolized? Oh thats right, those guys are black, and donate to thier causes. They are just opportunitist that exploit thier race to keep themselves wealthy.

My guess is that the powers that be maybe have wanted to axe Imus for awhile, but never had a good way to go about it since he's supposedly some kind of "Radio Legend". This very minor incident happens, gets blown out of proportion by the media and activists, and they now have an excuse to finally get rid of the Cowboy Cryptkeeper.

His main mistake was not having a PR firm or a good lawyer to back him up.

Now he's just another "Nappy-Headed Ho"-Guy.

That has nothing to do with freedom of speech.The fact that the general public is overly sensitive and whiny is another matter entirely. Imus took a risk with his freedom of speech and lost. CBS loses money because of his comment(s) and therefore fires him, strictly a business decision. CBS did nothing wrong, neither did Imus, it's just the way the general populace is. It sucks, sure, but it's not an encroachment on freedom of speech.

Had he been arrested and jailed for what he said, then you'd have a point.

They're not. They're panicky shitheads that would rather lose all their advertisers by having no morning show than lose a few for a month or two riding out a controversy. They allow themselves to be bullied by a tiny handful of people because when Al Sharpton opens his mouth they genuinely believe he represents all black people.

The O&A ordeal from a few years was a perfect example. They lost almost all their sponsors and everything used to replace them became a ratings black hole, stations collapsed... Clearly worse than losing a few sponsors and looking like the bad guys for a month or two. Ironically when O&A finally did meet with the president of the Catholic league, they hashed out their differences in minutes, and now he's a regular guest. If they had just done that at the time it would have been fine.

I agree that this isn't a governmental issue. I agree that MSNBC/CBS have the right to determine what they do and don't want on their station. I agree that Imus has the right to say whatever he wants.

I do NOT agree with the intolerance of the spirit of the law by people over-analyzing a single phrase and creating such a stink that a man loses his job over excersising that right.

Furthermore, I'd say that CBS/NBC are complete fucking hypocrites considering some of the Rap artists that are in their portfolio saying shit 100x worse than Imus ever did. Where's the protest for that?

I'm saying that freedom of speech and the tolerance for viewpoints is at an all time low in this country and I *doubt* that's what our forefathers intended. Can you imagine Jefferson, Washington and Franklin tip-toeing around saying "politically correct" things? They're probably rolling in their graves as we speak.

I think Rush Limbaugh is a bag of shit and would be happy if he died in a fire, but I don't boycott his sponsors. I just don't listen. I don't know why no one else can do that these days.

Imus was supposedly going on and on apologizing for days before Sharpton even came into the picture. Lots of media coverage, everyone talking about it, Imus fired, and I predict a sweet deal for Don Imus in the very near future. Probably satalite radio.

No, this wasn't a publicity stunt. A couple of people took Imus' comments and made it bigger than it should have been. Even with Deidre promoting her new 'Green House Cleaning' book and Imus' cancer charity, I doubt Imus deliberately intended to get the media coverage he's getting now. Imus didn't have a good PR firm to do intelligent damage control.

As for the satellite radio deal, he's radioactive at the moment, so it won't happen immediately. Perhaps after a couple of months when this is forgotten.

He's at my mothers Hospital. Apparently, he has 6 broken ribs, an almost destroyed right knee, and numerous cuts and bruises.

I can't believe you're fighting this hard to defend Don fucking Imus. No, it IS racist because he the only reason he made the comment at all was because they were black. And he wasn't talking about which team was 'tougher' he was talking about which was dirtier, more masculine, and indeed blacker.

In fact, the corollary he agreed to was 'jigaboos vs wannabes' from Do the Right Thing, which was about what? Light-skinned blacks vs dark-skinned blacks.

If I was commenting on the Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas fight and I said Mike Tyson looks like a hardcore gangsta-looking motherfucker, even though that description wouldn't be applied to a white guy, it's not racist, especially when you're talking about two black dudes.

Beyond that, a racist joke is not the same as being a racist. I don't enjoy Don Imus's show, but I do enjoy a lot of edgy humor and I know pretty much every good comic has said things that were offensive, and that if we're going to have humor on the radio, we can't be afraid to go there.

They have never, ONCE threated the livelyhood of ANY rapper. Having bullshit "summits" does not count here. The have never boycotted a record label due to an acts content, nor have they gone after advertisers tied into any acts.

Sure, we should allow comedians to say whatever they want, but on the flipside too many people say caustic things like this and then hide behind saying it was 'just a bad joke'. If it's not funny and he keeps doing it, he's either a racist or a terrible comedian. I say both.

Even then people, I still don't think he should have been censored, should be taken off the air, or suspended in any way. I'm completely with you, but I'm not going to deny the obvious and say he didn't make any kind of racial comment. He did.

The Founding Fathers were slave owners and considered other races to be inferior to their own intellectually and culturally, but yet they still crafted one of finest government documents in human history. CBS radio sent their on air talent a crystal clear message with this incident. Imus was one of their marquee players, and the way the handled this showed how they are unwilling to support their talent, no matter who they are or what they've done for the company.
