Sony Ceases Production of 20GB PS3 in North America

It looks like the rumors were true. Responding to retailer and consumer demand, SCEA has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that it will no longer sell the 20GB model of the PlayStation 3 in North America. SCEA's Dave Karraker said that they have decided to focus on the 60GB version.

No. Read the article. The differences in the two SKU's don't effect the games available and Sony is going to be backing that hardware (warranty and such) the same.

It's just a money issue, no one wants it and it costs them more than the 600 SKU so they're just cutting dead weight.

How would it cost more than the $600 PS3, when the 20gig model doesn't have Wi-Fi support or the media ports?

Sure, retailers like Best Buy don't want to sell the 20gig model (creates confusion for consumers), but I have a feeling this has more to do with Sony wanting the Wi-Fi support for PSP downloads and not having that option shrunk down with 20gig models out there.

The extras cost them less then the added price so they lose less money on the 60g model.

Easy: the extra stuff in the 60GB model doesn't add $100 to the manufacturing costs, so they take less of a loss on it.

20gb systems were barely available in the first place. Sony saying that no one wanted it is just PR/marketing.
