SEGA Acquires Marvel Super Hero rights

These franchises represent three of Marvel’s most popular characters and lend themselves to captivating game play.

“We have already seen Sega’s passion for the Marvel Universe through the early development of the Iron Man video game, and we look forward to working closely with them over the next few years to maximize the potential of these franchises in the interactive entertainment space,” he added.

Simon Jeffery, president and chief operating officer of Sega of America, said, “We are excited to broaden our partnership with Marvel, a recognized leader and innovator in the entertainment industry. As we continue to create games that are built from the ground up to appeal to Western audiences it makes perfect sense to work with a powerhouse like Marvel. We look forward to bringing these icons to life like never before and putting the power in the hands of the fans.”

Just give it back to Capcom please. At least we get the 360 MMO.

This is probably a mistake, but I'm putting a lot of faith into this.

I love Sega. I love Marvel. It HAS to work.

And yes, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was fucking awesome. That was one of my favorite games of last gen. I was hoping Radical Entertainment would do a sequel, but I wonder now if that's going to happen. Perhaps Sega will let Radical develop it, and Sega just slaps their name on as publisher, like they've done with a few things recently.

It makes me happy to see that people dug that game. A friend of mine picked it up when it came out and I thought he was insane, til I watched him play it for 20 min or so and then got to give it a spin. I got a cheap copy during the CC clearance way later, but it was certainly worth much more. I still don't know anyone who has managed to play it and think it isn't awesome.

Honestly, if Capcom had the license again, I'm not entirely sure they'd know what to do with it. Then again, I don't think that Sega does either.

Not good news imo. Sega can't/won't make a good Hulk/Captain America/Thor game, they can't even make good games with their own franchises right now.

Unless it's a 2D 4-player beat 'em up. Maybe.

Capcom would just use them to re-release MvC2 again. They haven't made a good fighting game since Okamoto left the company.

Also, let's shut the fuck up about the Sega boo-hooing until we actually know anything about it. Sega having the rights means it could be anyone from Treasure to Creative Assembly actually making the games. Sega publishing isn't the kiss of death. Condemned was good, Yakuza was good, Medieval II was good. Just wait until there's a scrap of info for once. When did this board turn into GameFAQs?

I wasn't exaggerating. I liked the 2D backgrounds, unfiltered sprites, and even the UI better. Especially the character select screen.

And the music... yeah. Yeah, that characer select in MvC2 was pretty memorable, to say the least, but I miss all the awesome character-specific themes. Strider Hiryu's was awesome, but Roll's was the best.

Seriously. Sega is more publisher than developer now. People don't freak out when Eidos or Atari gets the rights to something; they take note of the developer. Like it or not, Sega is one of those kind of companies now.

I'm just hoping Marvel has come to their senses about allowing any given company to 100% own a particular character to the point that other companies can't even use that character in a game like Ultimate Alliance. The fact that Ghost Rider was in MUA even though his game was put out by 2K is encouraging.

So, they've released a video showing the playable armors in the Iron Man game. Predictably enough, it's fucked up with system exclusivity bullshit - 360 gets Silver Centurion, PS3 gets Ultimate. If they pull this shit with the Hulk game, my money goes to whichever version gets Mr. Fixit (assuming the game itself is any good).

Gotta say, the fact that most of the preview coverage of these games has gone to non-enthusiast outlets is not encouraging.

Who cares? All the vids of Iron Man have looked terrible, and it's being made by a developer whose games have been nothing but meh at best. The new Hulk game looks nearly as bad, though they clearly copied most of the gameplay from Hulk:UD. Just hold on for games like Prototype.

This isn't a problem. The Ultimate Iron Man armor is crap.

As for Hulk, I doubt they'd make Joe Fixit one of the console exclusive. Most likely it'll be Planet Hulk (Gladiator) on 360 and Red Hulk (World War Hulk) or Ultimate Hulk (He Eats People) on PS3. Or at least, that's my hope.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on the Lindbergh sounds good about now. Just redraw the sprites for HD like SNK did with KOF XI. Of course, it's more possible they'd go the SF4 route and use polygon characters - cribbing the new 3D models from SF4 for Ryu & Ken, etc.

I'm not ready to start shooting GTFO-kens at the latter idea though, considering SF4 definitely looks loads better than EX3.

does the hulk license matter to you? cause protoype looks like it's going to be pretty much the same game + more powers.
