I'm waiting for literature to be blamed. I've read some seriously fucked up imagery in books; some of it far more grotesque than what is portrayed in video games. But I guess most people are too lazy to read, so it all goes unchecked.

This guy was fucked from the get-go. He's had numerous documented instances where he wrote about killing people and stalking girls at VT. I blame the parents for not taking harder look at their son and trying to give him the emotional support or medical (psychiatric) help he obviously needed.

‘Several Korean youths who knew Cho Seung Hui from his high school days said he was a fan of violent video games, particularly Counterstrike, a hugely popular online game published by Microsoft, in which players join terrorism or counterterrorism groups and try to shoot each other using all types of guns.’"
I thus went back on the Fox News Channel, and Bill Hemmer and I explained not only that I was right about your game figuring in the Virginia Tech massacre but also that the Washington Post excised the above excerpt from the story this morning. As you know, I similalry went on NBC’s Today Show with the DC Beltway Sniper still unidentified and at-large a few years ago and told Matt Lauer and the nation that the triggerman would most likely be a teen video gamer trained on a sniper video game. The tarot card was a clue, but there were other clues. I was right, as Malvo trained on your Microsoft game, Halo. NBC reported that three months later, and it was part of the criminal trial of Malvo.
Mr. Gates, your company is potentially legally liable the harm done at Virginia Tech. Your game, a killing simulator, according to the news that used to be in the Post, trained him to enjoy killing and how to kill. You knew five years ago that your on-line game, Counterstrike, so clearly figured in the massacre by a student in Erfurt that the event and the game impacted the race for Chancellor in Germany at the time!
Yet, here you are, five years after "Erfurt," still marketing Counterstrike. having done nothing to disable the server(s) for this mass murder simulator, and it looks like "Virginia Tech" is a consequence. There’s more going on in the world than Vista. Just ask the bereaved Virginia Tech families.
Mr. Gates, pull the plug on Counterstrike today, or do we need more dead to convince you? "Virginia Tech" was the 9-11 of school shootings, and it appears Microsoft is in the middle of it, in more ways than one.

This is an issue of nature vs. nuture. In this case, Cho was not getting the nuturing he needed.
Video games don't kill people or drive people to kill (I do agree that it does desensitize people to violence). I've been playing CS since '99. I watch UFC, I've been in a shit load of fights in my life (16) and I don't have any wish of gunnning down people at random. Why? Becuase I have parents who are ready to support me and guide me in the right direction.
Fuck anyone who says video games and their developers are responsible. It's the parents who are responsisble for rasing their children. Parents are responsible for the proper development of their child - NOT THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY! I' m fucking sick and tired of parents not taking responsibility for raising their children and people blaming the entertainment industry for thier family's problems. From your own personal experiences, take a look at the behavior of those who came from a strong family support unit and those who don't. I'll guarantee that those who had strong family support became "normal" citizens in our society. Those who didn't tend to be the "delinquents" in society.
This was a tragedy because there was plenty of opportunity for the family to help their son based on the many warning signs he displayed - they obviously didn't and now 32 innocent people are dead. I think the parents are partially responsible for how their son turned out - not video games.

didn't cho's sister turn out normal? it's possible cho was just insane, maybe from a chemical imbalance or some genetic thing. of course there is a case of bad parenting, considering cho should've been committed a long time ago, but parents' also like to think the best of their kids and kids try to hide a large part of their lives from their parents. finding out about his history of mental illness shows that a lot of people fucked up along the way by not taking action when they should've. the other people in his life, like the doctors and instructors, should've been a lot more perceptive than cho's parents when it came to his behavior.
god these things always make me so sad. so many lives ruined for no good reason. and no video game will make me or anyone else who's not psychotic desensitized to a school massacre.

Also, I don't buy the argument that media violence desensitizes people to real violence. This assumption often gets a pass as a concession in these sort of "X violence caused Y violence" arguments, but it's false. I can't even stand to watch Dr. 90210, and I play games (often violent) for a living.
