Student Leaves Ham Sandwich on Lunch Table Near Muslims, Suspended for Hate Crime

Muslim Student: "That ham sandwich in a bag where we couldn't even see might as well have been that pig's head and that cafeteria might as well have been the most religious building for Muslims in Maine."

Superintendent: "The children have got to learn that ham is not a toy, and that there are consequences for being nonchalant about where you put your sandwich."

"The Jews had to go through the same thing when the Nazis would force-feed them bacon; do we really want our schools to become concentration camps?"

"All our students should feel welcome in our schools, knowing that they are safe from attacks with ham, bacon, porkchops, or any other delicious meat that comes from pigs."

Innocent Bystander Student: "I know the guy who put the sandwich there, he just wanted to be funny and see how those Somalis would react. I'm just glad that kid I beat up yesterday was white; I wouldn't want to be in that mess."

Somali Student: "we didn't know what was in this bag. One of my friends reached inside it. It was a big ham steak. There were five of us at the table, all Somali. Right then, I could feel Allah condemning me to burn for eternity for being within a 6.2 meter radius of ham, so yeah, it was a hate crime... for the rest of my life when I remember middle school, this will pop up right away; it's like I'm back in Somalia being shot at all over again."

I think this story is a bit of a farce, but it's making it's rounds on serious morning radio who are passing it off as completely authentic. I think the incident happened, but I think several of the quotes are embellished.

Its a fucking sandwich. It was a joke. If this is true then America is becoming more and more like a fucking Communist state. Suspended for a ham sammich. I like to hear the convo with the kid and his parents.

Son: No I placed a ham sammich next to a muslim student.

Or the two college kids that got run over by a Muslim cab driver cause they got into a religious debate.

Yeah...please don't take an isolated event and turn it against those liberal boogeymen. If you want to talk about knee-jerk, ignorant, reactionary bullshit there are plenty of those for conservatives as well.

You want freedom? It goes both ways. You're free to say that sensitivity to other cultures is "pussification" just as they're free to overreact to a silly isolated event. They're both ignorant extremes, but that's what elected officials are for: making sure people like you never have too much influence alone.

What I don't understand is why the Muslim student even went into the bag. If there was a lunch bag next to you on a lunch table, wouldn't you assume that it's someone else's lunch and not look through it? Was he trying to steal someone else's lunch, and then realized the joke was on him?

For the record I'm "in the middle" neither Dem or Rep. I like to listen to the person who makes the most sense. Since you're so in tune with the political arena then run for office. All I would do is help this country get is balls back. It gets me fired up to hear about reoccuring instances where someone is talking about their "feelings getting hurt" and how now everyone needs to be "sensitive". Were things like this back 30-40 years ago? I'd say that that generation turned out okay - wouldn't you? As for ours? I'm pretty concerned. I understand we all have our differences and everyone has the freedom to be different, but I hate it when the media AND society like to take a simple, adolsecent act and turn it into a hate crime and further add fuel to the "PC" fire we all have to deal with today.

I would say the whole PC problem stems from the media, not the political arena. The reason people are so uppity and tigh-assed about PC terms and circumstances is because there's an advocacy group for just about everything, and they have an open forum to all levels of the media. If you so much as say or do something that could be construed as offensive, hawks will descend upon media outlets and you'll have microphones and cameras up your ass for days.

Part of it is just about the progression of technology and its ability to be more intrusive on every level. Youtube, 24 hour news networks, online news networks, etc. Politicians and officials have only recently been under constant public observation, and I assume it's unnerving.

As technology improves I imagine the situation will only get worse, but my point is, just because you see this ridiculous dance between media outlets and officials or representatives that stumble over their own words so as not to offend doesn't mean that freedom is being robbed of us. But expressing these freedoms is now under more public scrutiny than ever before.

Seriously, is this the Onion? Also, fuck religion, what I really want is freedom FROM religion. Meaning, I can eat my bacon, ham, porkchop sandwiches in front of the mosque if I want and they can ask me nicely to leave or perhaps instruct me politely on the evils of pork, but its my body that I'm polluting and they should be greatful and take solace in the fact that I'm going to die .5 seconds faster for eating that sandwich and pray to Allah to strike me down.

And I'll laugh because every moment spent in prayer is a moment you could be doing that actually DOES something. Also is there something like pork that offends Christians? Ah yes, homosexuality. I'll have to go do that in front of a church someday.

They weren't telling others to not eat ham, they weren't forcing their religion on anyone else, someone else came up to them with the purposeful intention of fucking with them.

Do I think the sandwich was silly and ultimately harmless? Yeah. Am I suprised that he was punished for trying to be a dick? Nope.

If it was a pimento sandwich he was suspended for, I'd understand.
