What was so profound about NES Gaiden?

The fucking eagles.
For conversation's sake:
Played properly, it's a totally different game.
That soundtrack is by Metal Yuhki. It sounds really similar to the music from Captain Tsubasa. I don't know the names of any other game composers from that era so this is probably the only time I'll ever be able to make that kind of observation.
I never really liked the NES Ninja Gaiden outside of the cutscenes. I wish it had stayed closer to the style of the arcade game when it made the move to the NES.
and on topic, although I loved Tecmo Super Bowl back in the day I think Captain Tsubasa 2 and most of the Kunio sports games are better.
Yeller knows the truth,
I don't think Ninja Gaiden is a deeper beat 'em up than say Golden Axe (the three distinct characters, animal riding, magics, etc. made it offer more than most games in the genre) but I guess I can see why some people would have NG as their top '80s beat 'em up. The grabbing and hanging moves make it feel a little more like a platform game than others, and the object interactivity was great. It's the beat 'em up for people that don't like beat 'em ups, from what I gather. For me, if NG's controls were a little tighter, it would probably be my favourite one for its era. There's something about them that hold it back for me. It's still a cool game, though.
Yeah, to an extent. Or people that are fatigued with them.
Depth is sort of a funny word to use when discussing the merits of these games, because none of them are really deep by any modern standard. I just felt like Ninja Gaiden changed and complicated the formula in a way that Golden Axe didn't. I do like Golden Axe a lot, though, probably my #2.
this game is coming out on wii too according to egm. it will still suck though.
I'm not unbiased in this matter since I loved the arcade game and was furious that they advertised a completely different game with the same name. Felt like bait and switch. That said, it seemed like a pretty standard Shinobi-esque with tiny little sprites, and some cool cutscenes.
I respect your opinion Frog. We are arguing taste here and nobody can win.
In my opinion: Golden Axe and Double Dragon set the gold standard for this genre.
