Blizzard isn't stupid enough to lock stuff like leaderboards away for paying customers. It'll almost certainly work how it does in WoW (username changes, server transfers, etc). In other words, stuff that doesn't affect the actual game.

It's not Blizzard anymore though, remember, pretty much anyone of worth left long ago, founded other companies, made better games, though you may be right, I still think they'll charge for early access to map packs and such, and other features.
Wrath of the Lich King is pretty goddamned awesome, Starcraft and Diablo look hot so I don't think the personnel changes affected them as much as you think. Where are these better games, by the way? Torchlight is rad but it's no Blizzard game.

The beta is starting this month for reals. This was just confirmed in a conference call so I don't have a link.
The idea is to have the game out sometime in mid-2010.
