So far I'm not liking this nearly as much as BW but it is fun. I'm just trying to figure out all of the new units and hot keys right now.
Lots of the new hotkeys are stupidly unintuitive like e for pylon, but you'll get used to it.
Yeah, I'm a strict Terran player, but I can't even fathom why Siege and Unsiege is two separate keys.
I tried out Protoss yesterday. With the removal and addition of so many new units, it is going to take some time to figure out what works against what all over again. That may explain some of my dislike compared to BW. I feel like I'm starting over, save for the basic concepts of Starcraft.
P.S. I miss Lockdown :cry:.
The only thing I can think of is that it will make it easier to deal with the eventuality of having a bunch of tanks selected, but with only half of them currently in siege mode.Quote:

The game is VERY different but I'd be happy to help you out if you like. And while Lockdown was kind of an ok spell sometimes, Snipe (which can be queued up from a distance to be cast over and over without the animation) and EMP make Ghosts actually useful in this game.

The new maps are very 2v2 friendly. Starting right next to your teammate is a huge advantage.

Siege tanks are too gas heavy and get blown up by all the +armor bonuses units have nowadays, and immortals shut down the factory tech lab units for free. Where are you getting the gas for tanks + vikings anyway? That's got to leave a TON of minerals unspent. Marauders are basically the bread and butter of Terran btw.
I stopped playing 2v2 because of those dumbass maps.

Played tonight a couple of games. I forgot the controls and got raped.
Stupid Zerglings how do I stop them with the Terran?
Uh first thing you should learn as Terran is how to wallin at your ramp/choke. Zerglings are very good against infantry until you get a lot of them, since ranged units get so much more effective in higher numbers. Even then you're going to have to micro them and kite the Zerglings since the pathing AI is so good in this game and the Zerglings autosurround. Terran is kind of hard to play well for people new to the game, but that's something to note in general and not in response to your specific question. Mid game and later, you can throw in some Hellions with the Infernal Preigniter upgrade and those willl rape Zerglings for free.
edit: added you and looked at the build order for your last game and saw that it was on a novice map too. :x Some more basic tips since you were obviously just outproduced by a ridiculous margin: make nonstop SCVs and try to keep your money as low as possible without queueing units. Just by doing this well, you're gonna probably be better than most silver players without any strategy whatsoever. You should probably try to learn a few basic build orders, but if you just follow the nonstop SCV and spending money as fast as you get it rule, you'll find that your builds match up well with most standard build orders. I saw that you made a supply depot at 8 supply or something and your SCVs were just way slower than the enemy's workers. Spend those minerals as fast as you can on SCVs, make your first supply depot at 10 supply, and then your barracks at like 12 supply. You made two supply depots and a refinery before barracks I think, which is pretty suboptimal since you didn't need the supply and gas is used for tech but you hadn't even made the most basic tech building yet. As for walling in or whatever, I can show you sometime if you like.
Is the best way to get better to just play more often and figure out my own build order? Should I look up videos for that?

So I play again with mannerbot's advice. Worked much better and I did a fair job of taking out the enemy base as his starships were crushing my SCVs and command centers. I eventually lost but he had little left except the ships.
I need to learn what builds air defense and how to get it. And is sure is nice not having to boot windows to play (deleted the partition again =D) and Steam tomorrow - times is good.
If you're a new player you're just going to be godawful for a long time, no way around it really. I'd recommend doing some reading at teamliquid.net except the SC2 forums are pretty awful with a bunch of terrible players posting random nonsense, but it's a start. Watch replays too.Quote:

Control the Xel'Naga watchtowers on maps where they provide vision of crucial locations, and build Pylons by your destructible rocks on maps that have them so you know if they're being destroyed.
Warp Gates and Pylons: when you get your Cybernetics Core up, you should usually start researching Warp Gates and chronoboost that. Start thinking about your Pylon placement, such as Pylons on the edges of your base for vision and also so you can warp in units outside of your base. When you're doing an aggressive build such as a 4 Warp Gate timing attack, you're going to want to make proxy Pylons in a secure location closer to the enemy so you can save on travel time.
Sentries: Guardian Shield is essential against Mutalisks and very good against other ranged units, but the real strength of the Sentry lies in the Force Field ability. There are obvious uses such as using a FF to block your ramp to weather a rush, or block an enemy's ramp to deny reinforcements. However, you should also think about using them to cut an enemy's army in two or cast them behind retreating/kiting units. Zealot/Sentry beats Marauders for cost if you can do this effectively. Zeal/Sentry is also one of the strongest unit combinations, since Zealots only cost minerals and Sentries are the best gas dump in the game.
Chronoboost your Probes early on, and make sure to keep taking advantage of it later. You should use it on important upgrades (Extended Thermal Lance, Warp Gate, Psionic Storm, Blink, Charge, or the Forge upgrades) or units that you want to get out as soon as possible. Group all your Nexuses to the same hotkey, so that you can chronoboost more effectively and also keep up nonstop worker production. For the Forge upgrades, in general Weapons > Armor > Shields. It's important to keep up Forge upgrades mid to late game as they can drastically change the balance of the game. For example, getting a fast +1 attack against Zerg can be very strong if you see him making a Zergling heavy army. Reason is, this allows Zealots to two-shot them instead of taking 3 hits to kill.

Note about build orders: when I say 9 Pylon, I don't mean you make 9 Pylons before anything else. That's a single Pylon at 9 supply assuming you've been keeping up nonstop worker production.
PvP: unless your opponent is using a proxy Gateway strategy, you will want to 1 Gate tech in this matchup. 9 Pylon 13 Gate 14 Assimilator 16 Cybercore probably, just keep up worker production and make stuff when you have enough surplus minerals. The standard safe play in this matchup is 2 Gate + Robo, which naturally gives you Observers to see what the enemy is doing and also serve as detection in case of Dark Templar. In this matchup, I think standard play should be to be more passive and try to get an expo up and survive, so that's why there are only 2 Gates when you can support more off one base. Once the expo is up, you will want to get Colossus with the Extended Thermal Lance upgrade. Abuse terrain and their range, and keep them out of harm's way. Against 3 or 4 Gate Zeals or something stupid like that, abuse FF to first stay alive and later divide and dominate the enemy forces.
PvT: in this matchup, you should probably 9 Pylon 10 Gate 12 Assimilator and Cybercore whenever your Gateway finishes. Reason being, Reaper rushes are particularly strong against Protoss and this allows for the fastest tech to Stalkers. If they are indeed Reaper rushing you'll want to chronoboost that first stalker out. You're still going to lose some Probes if you don't have good micro, but this keeps you from losing outright. After that, Zeal/Sentry are very effective in the early to mid game. If they're going very Marauder heavy, it may be a good idea to throw in Immortals as well. Later, transition to Colossus but keep them safe from Vikings. Most bad Terrans will probably lose outright to a 3 Warpgate + Robo timing attack though, so try that with an Observer for vision at their ramp.
PvZ: early pressure is crucial in this matchup, since Zerg have to choose between combat units and workers. If you allow a Zerg to just power Drones, you will lose as he'll just outmacro you. You'll want to make a wall at your ramp, leaving one space for a Zealot in hold position. Reason being, if you don't make this wall then due to the collision detection in SC2 Zerglings can just run through your units and into your base. On smaller maps like Steppes of War, you should probably 10 Pylon 10 Gate and chronoboost rallied Zealots to his natural expansion. Just off of the one Gateway, you can force a cancel of an expansion or even kill it outright (and Zerg does need to be a base up on you). If you scout a Roach Warren, a 3 Warp Gate + Robo timing attack is very strong. If, on the other hand, Roaches aren't being made, you should opt for 4 Warp Gates instead. Most Zergs at the lower levels won't really have any idea how to defend this.

I just caved in and played all yesterday, then deleted it today lol. Honestly 1v1 is WAY easier than 2v2 and 3v3. No shitty partners to mess me up. That also may have something to do with my roomate playing the placement matches though hahaha.
Still its nice to be able to see a strategy, apply the counter, and have it all work out because you scouted better. In team matches its much harder to counter mixed army composition.
If you're not playing in diamond league you're just noob bashing, lol. You'd still be winning in diamond league though. However, if you have teammates to play with, the team games are inarguably easier than 1v1.
I play with the random. The random is a fickle creature. He will say things like, going BC's. From that point on it is a 2v3.

So I just played my first practice game. I need to get to know the units. Some dude rolled me as I searched the menus.
Set up a game with just you and 1 computer opponent so you can play with the units and see whats up with the changes. The computer is so easy they won't do much and even if you win you can keep playing to mess around with the tech tree and stuff.
This game rules.

I can understand your hesitation. I'm not busting your balls over it just wish more TNLers were on it. I've waiting too long not to get the sequel. I even beefed up my PC and bought a brand-new wide-screen monitor. From what I played in the beta the game was still fun. I hope it continues in the full version although only having a terran story is shit.
The game pretty much disgusts me. I've still got it preordered since I had a 25% discount code, but I will almost certainly be eBaying it. If at some point (Battle Chest?) the game isn't terrible I will play it. It's bound to be a gigantic deal though and I'm sure you guys will have great fun with it.

Picked up my CE earlier tonight. The dog tag is seriously fucking nice. Metal frame with a faux digital display, press a switch to make the USB dongle come out, glowing blue light when it's attached. Comes loaded with Starcraft and Brood war. Hardcover art book, soundtrack, making of DVD, comic book, digital extras like the Thor pet, and some guest passes for SCII and WoW to give to people.
