Official "good places to eat" thread.

this started in the monthly haul thread. just thought it would be a good idea to share your local favorites so when others go out of town they can grab what's good.

im in erie, pa and i can probably assume none of you would come to, or travel through this armpit but we do have really good wings here.
we have a place which is by far, THE BEST. The Fiddle Inn in Harborcreek. Honey BBQ Cajun flavor is the fucking bomb tits and the corn fritters complement them well.
Eli's on west 26th street is 2nd place but they've been hot or miss lately so i'll give that spot to Chippers. over 65 flavors up off Pine Ave.
i've been to Boston, Seattle and Chi-town recently but hopefully this thread grows because i'm going to NYC in October.

You can't lose by going to a good Chicago steakhouse like Gibson's, Gene & Georgetti, Morton's, Carmine's, Chophouse, Smith & Wollensky, Ruth's Chris, The Capital Grille, etc. Shit, now I'm fucking hungry.

For a great Italian Beef sandwich, hit up Johnnie's Beef in Elmwood Park, IL. The best sandwich I've ever had, and I've had them all.

For a great pig out session, hit up Fogo de Chao in Chicago. Don't forget to drink a shitload of wine while you're there, too. You won't be doing shit afterwards, though.

You realize a bunch of those are not in the least bit Chicago exclusive, right?

If in south TX, cross the border into Matamoras, and hit off Nikkori, one of the baddest ass sushi spots in the world, believe it or not. And unlike most other sushi joints, everyone gets saki-drunk and full of delicious sushi for 30 bucks a head.

Saigon Noodle House in Crofton, MD.

Not a city exclusive or anything but Carinos is awesome. Great Italian food that rivals anything Olive Garden has to offer. They have a mouth watering Chicken Parmesan Panini with Italian chips that is just amazing.

Other then that, I think Tony Kornheiser said it best when referring to Jacksonville getting the Superbowl...

I second the Saigon Noodle house. The food is fucking incredible, prepared in less than 15 minutes, and always less that 15 dollars.

This is my favourite place I have ever found to eat. Second only to the Sushi bar I went to in Seattle with Master and Pacrappa. I think it was called Zen.

Favorite Philly hot-spots:

Lazaro's Pizza House - If you're ever on South Street with a couple of friends and they start predictably yapping about how they're craving Lorenzo's pizza, slap them and take them to Lazaro's at 18th & South. $2.00 a slice, $2.50 for specialty, and $1.00 for 3 incredible fresh Garlic Knots is a steal for the best pizza in Philadelphia.

Schezuan Tasty House - Best food in Chinatown for average takeout prices. Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce and the Twice Cooked Pork are 100% original and delicious.

Sabrina's Cafe - A wonderful BYOB breakfast, lunch & dinner in the heart of South Philly, right around the corner from the Italian market. A constantly rotating menu with all kinds of different items with some of the best breakfast, lunch and dinner in Philly.

Porky & Porkie - Korean BBQ at 11th & Washington. An all you can eat buffet of Raw meats, that you take back to your table and cook on a grill in the center of your table. A great place to go with friends because it's both fun and delicious.

Campo's Deli - At 2nd & Market. If you're walking around Olde City you must stop in and get a Campo's cheesesteak, because they're among the best in town. Also recommended are Tony Luke's and Pat's cheesesteaks.

In my neck of the woods:

• Los Compadres -- Best burritos I've found, and I go to a lot of burrito places around here. The al pastor burritos are awesome and the carnitas is absolutely amazing. You get plenty full for only $4.00. Or add some fresh corn tortillas for $.25 each (they make 'em on the spot when you order). Cost: $4.00 - $6.00
• Julie's -- Some massive sandwiches that are tasty and cheap. I usually can eat just a half at a time. They also make some really good burgers, including a burger as massive as their sandwiches (on a large sandwich roll, to boot). Don't let the exterior scare you away. Cost: $6.00 - $8.00
• Little Lucca -- Another great sandwich shop that makes sandwiches arguably larger than Julie's. Their sandwiches are definitely the best I've ever had, though you're best splitting a sandwich with someone else. Halves saved for later get pretty soggy. Cost: $7.00 - $8.00
• Mikuni -- Without a doubt the best sushi rolls I've ever had. Great atmosphere and reasonable prices for the quality of the food. I've been to more expensive places in San Francisco, Seattle and London, and none compare to Mikuni. Cost: $20.00 - $25.00

Razor, where is the BEST MEXICAN FOOD in NY/NJ? So far, nothing I've tried compares to even the greasiest junk joint in LA.

That made me laugh. Anyways, if you're in LA and don't go to one of the Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles, you're nuts. Crested Butte in Colorado has a restaurant called Slogars that only serves steak and fried chicken, and all of the sides you can eat.

In Denton, we have El Guapo's which is great tex-mex for pretty cheap. Bari's has great italian and is fairly cheap. A few miles west of Denton is the Ranchman's Cafe in Ponder which is considered one of the best steakhouses in Texas. New York Sub Hub is a pretty good subway-ish type place, but a lot better. Rudy's is great BBQ that you can find in several other cities in Texas. Frilly's is pretty good cajun food, although no match for the French Quarter. J&J's pizza on the square is probably one of the top 2 or 3 pizza places in DFW.

If you're in Fort Worth, go to Fuzzy's across the street from TCU. Also there's a few mexican restaurants that are decent and unique to FW, but I forget the name. Kincaid's is known as one of the best burger places around.

Dallas has Pizza Guy which is really good, and more than its fair share of really good sushi restaurants that run from modestly priced (Sushi Yokohama in far north Dallas) to insanely priced (Teppo on Lower Greenville). Maybe some people can fill out Dallas a bit more. There are obviously unique places in Dallas, but the majority of what you see is nationwide chains.

If you ever pass through the area where Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri meet, hit Bussey's BBQ in Miami, OK for the best ribs I've had in my life.

If you're in the east Village, I'm going to suggest a Greek restaurant named Pylos. Their duck is excellent and the service is above average. Their wine selection leaves something to be desired but they have great white wines if you decide to go with pasta.

San Loco on Second Ave. between 8th and 7th or 8th and 9th. I always forget. Grade A meats and cooked right there in front of you. Best motherfuckin' tacos I have ever had hands down.

Had you stayed a while longer I would've showed you the place. It's about two blocks from Cheapshots.

Also they seemed to make a big deal out of the fact that chips and salsa are free. I can't think of any sit down mexican restaurant I've ever been to in Texas where that isn't the case.

Cluck-U Chicken, which started in College Park, MD, has a few locations around MD now, and that shit is fucking delicious. If you love wings, or anything else chix, Cluck-U owns for greasy, stomach-rot-inducing good times.

Fast Pizza, Bmore, MD. The most disgustingly terrible, but somehow delicious pizza ever (characterized by a particularly auburn-colored shit-storm following consumption), and home to the fabulous 2 dollar lunch special, which includes a slice of pizza, a can of soda (you ain't doin' it right unless you get orange soda), and a single Newport, better known as a "loosey". Me and Josh tried to stop there for dinner after band practice a while back, but sadly they were closed due to a recent murder that had happened less than 10 feet from the front door, as witnessed by the candles, teddy bears, and flowers piled up near the entrance.

God cluck-u is delicious. My roommate worked there and would bring home free food all the time. It was awesome until he got fired.

And I still stand by Blockheads. Delicious fucking burittos. And Spumoni Gardens is the best slices of pizza you will ever, EVER eat.

555 Steakhouse here in Long Beach. Open Sesame in Belmont Shore, CA. Marco Pizzeria in Branford, CT. Gourmet Delight (Chinese place) in Monterey Park, CA. Keens Steakhouse in New York. Phuket Thai in Belmont Shore, CA. Tandoor in New Haven, CT. Oh yeah, and Modern Apizza in New Haven, too.

Colony Grill, Myrtle Ave. Stamford, CT.

All they serve is alcohol and pizza, and their pizza is fucking amazing. I recommend the hot oil pizza.

Also, Famous Pizza, N. Main St. Norwalk, CT.

M.A.S.H. Subs in Cocoa Beach, FL. And yes, it is themed after the TV show. My favorite sub was the "Radar", which was ham and turkey...everything is so fresh, and they have the the best sweet peppers I've ever had.

If you like Spumoni and you're in New Haven and on Wooster street, get something from Sally's, Frank Pepe or Abate's.

CT pizza interests me, a lot. Colony Grill's food looks amazing in pics, I'd like to get out there sometime and try it. I didn't think Boston had good pizza at all for quite a long time, and though we don't have much, it's there. Upper Crust is absolutely amazing, the Beacon Hill one is a five minute walk from my place, and it's excellent. The other good pizza place we've got is Pizza Pie-er, which comes to us by way of Rhode Island. Which also brings me to...

Spike's Junkyard Dogs. Though there are hot dog places at home I still prefer, Spike's is fantastic. There's one near Hynes now (Mass Ave and Boylston, where Cassava (RIP :( ) used to be) so you don't need to descend into the hellish depths of Allston to get it anymore, either.

Eagle's Deli in Brighton is the place to hit for burgers. The Godzilla Burger gets you one pound of beef with 4 slices of cheese and a pound of fries. I'm moving out that way in September, but I still think I'd die if I tried to eat there more than once per month.

Best, cheapest lunch is New Saigon Sandwich in Chinatown (Washington St). $2.50 gets you killer banh mi. I recommend the barbecue beef sandwich. If you catch them at the right time they'll have spring rolls fresh out of the fryer for $1 each, and they're the best I've ever had. When I graduate I suspect I won't ever be down that way much, so I'm filling up on them while I can.

There's a place called Sushi Rock in Cleveland. Awesome atmosphere and great food.

Also in North Carolina: Fast food sort of place called Kings. Best fucking Barbaque Ever.

My picture was on the wall with a Yankees hat for finishing the Godzilla burger. It's so fucking delicious, and the cook is such a dirtbag stoner. I've never had a better burger, though Five Guys is really very close. Everytime I'm in the area, which unfortunately isn't often, I make sure to hit up Eagles.

One of my friends is one of those dirtbag stoners now, heheh. I miss being within a half hour of a Five Guys, I don't know why they're not better known, they're pretty well represented on the east coast as far as I understood. There is no chain that makes a better burger.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the cook is always an awesome guy whenever I'm there.

And yeah, Five Guys is delicious; I never had it until last month when one opened by me at school...I never even heard of it before then. None around here in NY. The Five Guys vs In N Out debates are endless. It's almost a challenge to eat a small fries and a bacon cheeseburger since the burgers are half pound double patties and the fries are double the container size since they just dump 'em in the bag... and all those fucking peanuts first. Man, I wish I were back at school to get Five Guys.

Baja, West Haven: Mexican food. Best I've had outside of Mexico itself.

Roseland Pizza, Derby: Pizza. In the middle of craphole Derby, but people that have had the pizza know what's up.

Miya, New Haven: Japanese/Sushi. Top notch all the way.

Twisted Vine, Derby: Italian. I never would have expected the food here to be this good.

The Smoke Joint BBQ Restaurant, their angus beef hotdog is delicious

Seattle:

Dahlia Lounge. On 4th Avenue, it's close to shopping and is a trendy (but very intimate) choice. It's high-end, so it's not an everyday sort of place, but it is fantastic for special occasions (or days when you get a raise). Good wine selection, very good seafood (insanely good), and an ambience that is tough to beat for a Seattle restaurant w/o a view of the Sound. Highly recommended. Price: $$$$

13 Coins. I'm recommending this not just b/c I love it but b/c everyone who comes to Seattle has a chance to experience it. There is a location right across the street at the Seatac airport, so no excuses for not trying this place (got a layover in Seattle? Give it a shot)! Solid food, good atmosphere (sit at the bar and watch the sous chefs work) and...open 24 hours. I'm also forgetting to mention that they make the best omlettes I've ever had. Check it out! Price: $$$

Those two dollar dumpling places (one on Allen, the other by Chinatown Fair). I regularly buy the frozen sacks of 30 to cook at home.

I also recommend this new Hong Kong Noodle Station place that just opened up. It's near the McDonalds on Bowery. A huge bowl of soup for like 2.50 where you can combine over 20 different ingredients (noodle, soup base, meat, toppings) to your liking.

And last but not least I recommend the Lunch Box restaurants (there's like 3-4 of them) where you can get 5 items (sesame chicken, curry chicken, lo mein etc) plus a cup of cabbage soup for 3.50.

I'd be careful about those lunchbox places. They recycle soup.

Another place that's good to go is Down the Hatch on W. 4th Street in Manhattan. There wings are pretty expensive, but oh so fucking good. They also have some of the spiciest sauces I've ever had in the entire tri-state area. I can't take hot sauce (I'm a honey BBQ man) but my friends love the extra spicy wings.

It's a bar, though, so it's not really a family or date type of place.

If you're in Hoboken, you cannot fail with this Japanese restaurant called Illusion. I'm not sure if it's a chain or not but they have decent beef and seafood. The service is solid and the prices aren't killer.

In Jersey City, I love Dorrian's restaurant on Washington Boulevard right on the Pavonia/Newport section. Those that ever travel here should go here for a chill atmosphere (it's also pretty romantic when there aren't any games on TV), decent service, and superb meals. It's a normal bar and grill but their burgers are pretty tasty and affordable. Everything is normally under $10.

Anyone in the NYC area want to start a restaurant group? I normally go with friends once/twice a month but a lot of them are whining that they aren't bars.

Oh, and there's a place in the Lower East Side that has 10 cent plates of wings with a pitcher a beer during the week. I'd have the name but my ex isn't talking to me so...yeah. Anyone know the name of the place?

that reminds me. i went to a small japanese place nestled pretty much in the Microsoft Campus when i was there a couple years ago. real good, home type of feeling but i can't remember the name. i also frequented the Redhook Brewery (great food to go with the great beer) and a semi-fast food chain called Teriyaki. their general Tso's and sticky rice ball was the fucking bomb.

i was also really suprised when i was in Youngstown the other month how they seemed to treat their Buffalo Wild Wings more like a bar than a restaraunt. place was fucking PACKED and rowdy on a Friday night. the one we have here immediately feels more like a restaraunt. too expensive and horrible wings imo.

there's a place in Rochester has an "everything plate" and i can't for the life of me remember the name. pretty damn good drunk food.

Excellent Pork Chop House! I took the Fung Wah into NYC Chinatown a few weeks ago to meet my dad while he was there on business and I had lunch there. I would take the trip just for that, really. I hadn't been there since I was in high school and it didn't disappoint.

There's a restaurant here in Long Beach called Cinco de Mayo. It's run by El Salvadoreans but better than any Mexican food ever. However, in CT, go to Jalapeno Heaven in Branford. Good stuff.

San Antonio:

Mi Tierra: This place has great atmosphere and is by the Market (El Mercado) area. It's been here since 1941 (my mom, who is Mexican, used to go here when she was a little kid).

The greatest thing: if you're in town, hit up their bakery and sweets and get some gingerbread, some empanadas and some Leches Quemada (a milk fudge caramel), candied pumpkin, and some Banderillo de Coco (coconut bar) to go.

They have a full bar where you can kick back with a Dos Equis and a dozen oysters on the half shell or get totally wasted on margaritas. And they're open 24 hours.

This is the place they keep showing with the mariachis if you've watched any of the Spurs homegames during the NBA Playoffs.

If you're driving east on the I-10 to Palm Springs (or west to San Bernardino/LA), take the Calimesa exit at County Line Road and visit a place called Ocampo's. Best free chips and salsa I've ever had (homemade chips, and a family recipe salsa), and the rest of their menu always hits the spot. Breakfast or lunch - one of the best little-known Mexican restaurants in California.

That Greek pizza looks damn tasty. And LOL at that janitor sign.

The best place I've ever eaten at is the Inn at Little Washington in Little Washington, VA. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. It was also hideously expensive (dinner is prix fixe and runs $140-$160 depending on the day. I wasn't paying) and in the middle of nowhere. But if you're willing to drop a lot of money on a fantastic meal, you won't be disappointed. I eat out a lot at some fairly nice restaurants (I live about 45 minutes from DC, which is loaded with good places to eat), but nothing has been even close to the Inn.

Edit: I figured I should mention some good, cheaper places to eat around DC ( it's heavy on the Asian restaurants because they tend to be better bargains and I have no money):

Mannequin Pis in Olney, MD. It's Belgian. Probably my favorite more reasonably priced restaurant in the area. Most entrees are under $20. If you go be sure to get the garlic pomme frites as a side and the pot au chocolat for dessert.

Gom Ba Woo in Annandale, VA. A Korean BBQ place. There are a ton of good Korean BBQ places in Annandale (it is chock full of Koreans) but this is the only one I've eaten at. It was really good. The beef short ribs are to die for. Be warned that they make the BBQ in the kitchen instead of grilling it on your table like most Korean BBQ restaurants.

Taste of Saigon in Rockville, MD. Best Vietnamese restaurant I've eaten at. You can't go wrong with anything in black pepper sauce (you can choose between shrimp, scallops, soft shell crabs when they are in season, or all three).

Seven Seas in Rockville, MD. Great seafood heavy Chinese place. I recommend whatever fish is in the tank in the brown garlic sauce.

If you want to try something different go to Bob's Noodle 66 in Rockville. It's Taiwanese. There's some real weird shit on the menu that you may not like. There's some great stuff too though. If you're not Asian you'll probably get some weird looks from the other diners (my girlfriend and I did).

For 35 dollars you get unlimited meat and trips to the sushi/seafood/salad bar.

Now the drinks range from 8 bucks for a beer up to 20 for some of their special margarita's. also, I was drunk and spent 250 dollars on a shot of King Louis to impress my super duper cool customer with my leet drinking skillz, however this was very dumb it tastes like dust.

Also, there is a place for a god damn real good after bar drunk hot dog, the name escapes me, BrandX, I know you know this joint, help a brother out.

Bangkok Joes at the K St. Waterfront. Kickass pad thai, dumpling bar, and I personally recommend the pad see ew, and go with the sen yai noodles...fatter and more delicious, just like all of your mothers. It's about 12 bucks, which ain't all that cheap for Asian food, but it is K St. after all.

Unbelievably delicious, at any price...I'd easily pay 20 bucks or more to eat what they offer at lunch for 8.

Another way to eat cheap and deliciously is to just walk the streets...the stands offer everything under the sun, from Mexican to Greek to Indian to Italian, and there are tons of awesome chili-dog stands, just like every other metro area.

One thing I missed out on in TX was the delicious, independently owned, roadside mexican and barbecue joints, due to to certain persons being wary about contamination. I firmly believe that the independent joints, for the most part, care more about their clients getting sick than fucking Circle-K does. Could they? Sure, anyone could, but chain-joint Sonic got me sick and what felt like near death (at the friggin' Jenny Lewis show @ Emo's in Austin no-less...beautiful words and titties were countered by behind-dumpster vomiting and pleas of mercy to a non-existent deity) whereas I've never eaten roadstand or independent food and had anything other than delightful experiences.

DC stands rule, awesome food, and I'm supporting a dudes family vs. some trans-national corporation. Homey puts food on my plate and I help put it on his table.

If you're ever in Columbus Ohio and want a fantastic burger hit up The Thurman Cafe. It's just south of downtown in German Village on Thurman Ave. Plus the drinks aren't priced too crazy for a bar. You'll have to wait a while for a table on Friday or Saturday evening/night but it's never too busy during the week.

How much do you guys spend when you go out? Say for 2?

When I go out with my girlfriend, the bill usually adds up to about 50-80 bucks now. Which is fine with me. We usually get an app, 2 mains and a drink or 2. We used to spend like 30 bucks but now that I've been a cook for a while, we like to taste it all.

$30-$50 is about the average for me.

That's cheap compared to when my wife cooks at home. She likes to cook extravagant meals, and will spend upwards of $100 just on ingredients.

I'm fine with 25-cent Ramen noodles, but never complain when she whips up a filet mignon with roasted potatoes and bacon-wrapped asparagus.

Tried The Sultan of Smoke in Joplin, MO today. Their sign declares them the best BBQ on Route 66, as voted by the readers of Route 66 Magazine. It's great if you like the uber-smokey school of BBQ... myself I prefer it with a good balance of smoke and sweet. The ribs were a bit dry; they definitely didn't top the afforementioned Bussey's. The brisket and pulled pork were very good, though, as were the beans. The fries and sweet tea were nothing special.

I'll probably go back in a month or so and try the polish sausage and chicken (didn't bother to note whether it was bone-in pieces, breast fillets, or shredded :-/ )

I'll have to try that when I go back out to Joplin for work next month.

If you're ever in the San Diego north county area go to Mariachi's for a Carne Asada burrito then right across the street to Los Mariscos for some rolled tacos.

Thats one of the first things I will be doing when I move to AZ is head out to San Diego. Haven't been there since I was a young child and I can imagine the mexican food is second to none.

I went to Dallas for the first time two weeks ago after years of suffering in San Antonio and Houston.

Ft. Worth, like I said earlier in the thread, should include visits to Fuzzy's and Kincaid's. I don't know the bar scene too well there, but would guess the bars next to Fuzzy's (across from TCU) for cheap and downtown for expensive. The downtown atmosphere in FW is actually far nicer than anywhere in Dallas, including Deep Ellum and Lower Greenville.

Unfortunately, I've yet to be blown away by much here in the Triangle. It's like there's an above average selection of decent to good, but little truly great. My favorites here so far are Kanki for Japanese and Sushi, Jarpur for Indian, and Dockside for cheap, huge plates of fried seafood. Thai House (?) in Raleigh is off the fucking hook though.

Granted, I have yet to eat at several of the notable restaraunts here like Mama Dip's and that Ethiopian place that's supposed to be really good. Speaking of, Yoshi, we need to grab a bite real soon.

Charlotte, on the other hand, has some banging cuisine. Ru San's is some of the best sushi I've ever had, priced well to boot. Hotel Charlotte has excellent creole ettoufe's and she-crab soup, as well as a great beer selection. The Dish has great 'new-southern' cuisine. Sadly my all-time favorite eatery, the King & I, is gone but their legacy lives on in ThaiThai Takeout. Many excellent new restaurants have been popping up as well now that Johnson-Wales is based there.

In Wilmington, I suggest Flaming Amy's and Fantastic Pizza.
