One of the things I've found out about myself is that working out for health and/or "looks" just doesn't motivate me. Yeah, I'll go to the gym and yes, it's nice to see results (especially when you can pick up a heavier weight or notice your arms looking bigger, or getting on the scale and seeing improvement). But what really motivates me is competition.
When I'm competing (no matter the sport) I don't care how hard I'm working and it's not a chore to go to the basketball court, or the pool, or whatever. Testing myself against another person is such a great rush.
Yeah, bodybuilders can compete, and any workout regimen can be a "competition" against yourself, but it's just not the same, imo. I need a competitor, or at least the clock (when I'm in the pool) to compete against.
Training for something gets me to the gym. Ego does not.
