With GTA-style games like Luxoflux' True Crime in development, are we seeing the emergence of a new genre? Will the market become flooded with GTA clones?
Personally, I love GTA3. It was easily the best game released last year.
But I hope there won't be too many companies trying to cash in on the craze.
What do you think?
I can't get enough of crime focused games. Watch out for Mafia and The Getaway too.
I'll probably play my share of GTA3 clones, no doubt, but I'd like to see more clonage in the way of gameplay rather than theme. I mean, the crime thing was really fun, but I can see the grim -n- gritty urban thing getting run into the ground.

But seriously, as long as they mantain GTA3's level of quality, I'm all for clones.
I'd like to see other games use he same style of huge go anywhere cities.
Imagine a Batman game like gta3, where you could stop crime all over Gotham, while taking jobs for the police.
The Getaway looks really good, I hear the comabt could use some work though. But I have a feeling that GTA3 will be cloned to the extreme. That game did SO well, it made Rockstar millions. And every company is going to want a peice of that. Just about everybody LOVES that games, even people who never play video games bought a PS2 for GTA3. And of course companys beleive they will get the same type of sales. But The Getaway has been in development for like 2 years, so it was most likely not intended to be a GTA3 clone, but since it came out later it will be considered a clone.
GTA3 is one game I'd LOVE to see clones of. Give me more cities to disect, please!

There's a promiseing sound title called Good Cop, Bad Cop (ok, it's a silly name) but read up on it in the most recent XBN (with Panzer on the cover). Good stuff I say.
GTA3 clones are defintily going to be the trend for awhile.

Well, hell, Resident Evil single-handedly started the whole Survival-Horror genre which spawned many good RE sequels, two scary-as-fuck Silent Hill games, the grossly underrated Fatal Frame, and others. Sure, there have been duds here and there, but that new genre has produced some true gaming classics.
So if GTA3 starts the whole Crime-Simulator genre, I would have no problem with that if it produces even ONE good new franchise like SH was to RE. Yes, we'll see some real cash cow stinkers here and there, but alot of the new games look like they have some real promise. :)
I'll be interested in any game that has the potential to take GTA3's theme and scope to a higher level.
It should be fun to watch this 'sub genre' grow.

... i mean... i'm playing it on my PC right now... and it's good... but it feels and plays exactly like GTA1 & 2... i'm seeing no difference, other than being more cinematic, and obviously 3D
... maybe i just have to get farther in the game, but as of right now, i'm not seeing why it's getting so much praise...

The getaway is much differrent than GTA3. If you ask me, its GTA3 done right. MGS style controls, detailed graphics, accurately portrayed city landscapes. too bad sony is going to lose millions cause of the cost of development
I have yet to play GTA3, so I'm going to rent it one of these. Although, I'm affraid that the series might become another Tomb Raider, especially now that DMA Designs sold out to Rockstar Games.
Never played GTA3, never will. The whole damn concept just sounds stupid. You want free roaming, go anywhere, do anything gameplay? Play Morrowind.

Man, I feel sorry for people that don't like GTA3 or refuse to try it.
Anyways, I hope the use large cities and open-ended gameplay catches on with developers, not just the crime theme.
As evidenced by GTA, Way of the Samurai and other games, emergent game design is emerging on the console scene and I love it.

What do you think improves about the game besides how the more parts of the city opens up? To be honest, I've only played missions in the first few hours, although I've seen people do more advanced missions, and I even saw the last mission and the ending.Quote:

The lack of weapons hurts the beginning of the game, I think. I'm sure adjusting to game's controls was part of the reason too.

To its credit, I like GTA3 MUCH more than the matrix. If I did my job as poorly as Keaunu Reeves does his, I'd surely be fired, yet he makes millions of dollars. What a topsy-turvy world we live in.
its not cool to glorify crime, i grew up around that shit, but the game is damn fun...if there was an XB version i'd get it.

It might have something to do with the "I don't like it because it's popular" mentality some people have around here.
Out of all of the things that change, I would have to say the complexity and overall difficulty of the missions is the one thing that really stands out. In the beginning all you do is "drive me to point a then bring me to point b" type missions. They exist for the sole purpose of getting you acquainted with the game. After that, things start to get interesting, and you begin to see where the game's nonlinearity comes into to play.Quote:

You're given an objective, and how you go about completing it is completely up to you.
For example, there is a mission later on in the game in which you must blow up an airplane in mid flight and pick up the cargo it leaves behind, after you do so, you must deliver the cargo to one of your bosses at the other end of town.
Now this may sound easy, but the presence of local law enforcement coupled with interference from the FBI makes getting to Point B a little difficult.
Now, you could simply drive to your destination, and deal with the feds and their road blocks, or you could be sneaky and dive into the subway and take the train to a location that is closer to the drop off point, or instead of taking the train, you could just drive your car through the tunnels. But the way I like to tackle this mission is by stealing a small biplane and flying towards my objective, completely circumnavigating any interference.
You see, the game tells you what you need to do, but how you go about in it's execution is completely up to you.

I love GTA 3, but clone are going to have to take it to the next level...Somehing like a mix of a deeper real world (like Hitman for the PC) and deeper driving (Like Driver. Okay, it isn't terribly deeper, but you know what i mean.

I haven't been critical of the game, I only said I think it is overated. There are plenty of games, even recent ones, that have grabbed my attention in the first few hours. GTA3 did not. The missions are a lot of fun and all that, but I think for a lot of people its the other stuff that makes them enjoy the game. One main reason killing innocent people, causing havoc, and not having to run from the cops. Its stuff you have always wanted to do in a game but never could because it was never executed very well. Plus its all th exploration, finding cool things to jump and such. People will play this game for hours on end and not touch a single story mission. And by the way GTA3 and Marrowind are two completly different experiances. Sure both of them try to make it feel like a real world, but both are done differently. And I think GTA3 is waaaaay better then the first two, I hate the first 2. GTA was meant to be in 3D like this. The first two are very boring (and I have thought this ever since they came out), and unintresting. But when GTA came to 3D everything changed. I don't know why it just did. Play GTA3 now, you'll thank me later.
