Here's what he told Hitfix:
When I sat down with Tim Blake Nelson and Edward Norton to discuss their new collaboration "Leaves Of Grass," we had a free-ranging conversation that was terribly enjoyable, and it was only when we stood up to leave that I finally broached the "Hulk" subject with Norton. Part of me suspected that he would dodge the query or defer it, which is why I left it to the end. Surprisingly, Norton seemed more than willing to discuss it, and his answers were to-the-point and more optimistic than I would have imagined.
"It's really up to you guys," he told me at one point, and by "you guys," he was referring to fans and the fan press in particular. "Is it important to you? Does that continuity matter?" The answer seems to me to be yes, it does matter to people, and there's something appealing about the notion of Edward Norton, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Hemsworth together. That's chemistry I'd like to see. Downey's hyper-confident Tony Stark would make an excellent foil for Norton's twitchy energy as the haunted Banner.
Well, I'm banging on the "bring him back" drum. Norton's Banner was likable, and problems or not, I liked Marvel's second attempt at a "Hulk" movie. I actually think the flaws in that film lie at the director's feet, who I'm not fully convinced is good at handling actors. But I digress.
At any rate, who knows what they have cooking at this point, but I say if they intend to inculde Hulk, talk to Norton and bring him back. I guess the option would be recasting, or just writing Hulk out of any eventual "Avengers" movie. I hope this grand plan of theirs works out though. It'd be nice to have a cinematic comic book universe to turn to, where everything is connected via the same characters/actors used across multiple pictures. I think this would only work for Marvel films though, since I just can't see Batman mixing it up in space with the rest of the Justic League. I like my Batman gritty and as realistic as possible. But I digress again. Bring Norton back!
Just in case you don't see the big picture, I present to you now a rundown: In three years...just three short years...if all goes according to plan, we will have the most ambitious superhero movie of all time, "The Avengers." You’ve got Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, possibly Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, possibly Ed Norton as villain or eventual teammate Hulk, the yet-to-be cast Captain America, possibly Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, whoever else they're contemplating to throw in there, and lastly, a Kitchen Sink as itself. Jesus Horatio Christ. This could be amazing, or a colossal cluster bleep. I am so scared/intrigued, I can't even tell you.
