If Contra 4 not selling means this is the last Contra game, I would accept it.

Exactly. When the best game in the series is 13 years old, you could make an argument it's already dead.
until there are no more games, then you really can't.
well, you might, but that doesn't mean much at this point.
I always assumed the 3-D 'vanias were a result of Sony stiff-arming Konami and Iga into making 3-D games and not 2-D ones. I remember this was commonplace knowledge that Sony was doing this a few years ago. I have no idea if Sony is still doing this (the Drac-X remake makes me think , 'yes') or if Microsoft has similar objectives with what they expect a game should be.
Sony had no such practice in Japan, and I don't buy that they'd stiff arm Konami at all and risk losing MGS to Microsoft.
That's really, uh, deep and all, but I feel like denying yourself a gameplay experience you'd enjoy because of this psychotic, rabid anti-portable hatred might be a little bit foolish. But since life is so short, I can definitely understand why you want to take high resolution over gameplay.
You're assuming that we would enjoy playing on a 2" screen and with a questionable d-pad.
To each their own. I do think the 3D graphics of the DS are shit, PSone, Saturn, N64 level 3D is a layer of hell in it's own. But between the 2D games and the "gimmick" the port has earned it's keep just fine. A few more developers seem to be embracing 2D gaming on the system too, so the system looks more interesting than a year ago to me. And really outside of ports and 2.5 how many 2D games have we gotten on PSP? Off the top of my head Loco Roco (if it counts) and a redrawn Twinbee port on a Konami shooter collection. Don't get me wrong the PSP is a great system, but the DS was bought because it was cheaper (much cheaper) and offered something different.
As far as the Wii is concerned, it was geared as a niche system and it works fine graphic-wise, whores will disagree naturally. We really did need another HD supercomputer with 10 exclusives to it's name (8 of which first party), and yet another platform for third parties to get a port on to recoup the 10 million dollar development cost and 3 years of work? Don't get me wrong, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are great systems but the Wii was cheaper and offered something different.
*ahem* Now Contra 4 or bust.

No, we didn't need another console. We need Nintendo to stop making hardware all-together.
