Yeah, the point is obvious. But the irony is delicious. Essentially you stated that you would choose a great-looking game with shitty gameplay (as you have said in the past) over a subpar-looking game with (purportedly) good gameplay.

No, I said nothing of the sort. Try reading instead of looking at the pictures.
I'm reading between the lines.
Dead man walking.
Obviously I'm not disagreeing with Yoshi, but I am happy that this turned out to be good and I'll be picking it up when I have some free time. But expecting an all-new 2D game with high-resolution sprites is a little ridiculous. And it's a little bit more than ridiculous to bitch when there's an all-new 2D game with great gameplay in 2007.
You're damn right.
Would you pay $30 for a VHS tape too?
If your mom's on it. Seen a bunch of those lately.
That at least as pretty as Contra on DS, so I'm not surprised.
Nothing like a good vintage, amiright?
I'm leaving before I get mental images of my mother naked in pixel art.
Press start, eh?
Blah blah blah Yoshi doesn't give a shit about this game and will continue to ignore a damn good Contra because of some misguided gaming ideals overtaking the desire to have a good time.
So I got this game for cheap since my girlfriend got Mario Galaxy for me for Xmas from Toys R us and gave me the $25 gift card.
This game is actually better than I thought it would be. Took them long enough to make a real sequel.
I know of at least one!
I can see G-Rev gloating with glee.
 Eh, well I bought Border Down LE when it was new so that makes up for it.
The "Challenge" levels in C4 are fantastic. It's nice to have little gameplay-modified goals to run through, and it looks like you can fight the bosses from the main game at will as you clear 'em.
Just unlocked Super C, too. <3
The return of Super C's Level 2 weapons rocks, especially the machine gun.
WFT did a great job, and the difficulty is just fine- with more challenge than the cakewalk arcade versions' default settings. Neo Contra and Shattered Soldiers can just get out. Here, Normal will kick your ass in the first stage for a little while- and the first boss has a cool surprise waiting for you. You're not going to just blaze through.
Should Konami port C4 to the Wii/XBLA/something, I'd buy it again.
The "dead zone" doesn't really cause any problems. Good thing there's no stylus fuckery of any sort in Contra 4.
Possible, I haven't given my copy a spin yet but all I've heard since the arcade release is mediocre impressions. Regardless of quality the game was never going to move 100,000 units.
I bought Senko too at $10. Would be playing it still if VF5 didn't come out and take over my time. :)
Yeah, he needs to take out Contra and add RBI Baseball. :D
God damn it.
The original arcade release was terrible.
It is also about 5-6 revisions behind. Hell, even the X360 version has had about 3-4 revisions. The game as it stands now is fine and fun, if a little unbalanced.
The problem with a game so focused is that it's going to have no value to most players, but for the dedicated spending $1000 on an arcade board is a good value. So it makes a retail-priced console release really awkward, unless you add lots of 'silly' extras.
And on topic, I bought Contra 4... and it's a Contra game. Right down to my face getting raped. I did manage to beat Shattered Soldier though, so I figure I'll learn the game in due time.
Had a bit of trouble finding a copy of Contra 4. For some
reason I'm not feeling it. I do dig the History of Contra
extras Museum.
The game is fun, the gameplay is tight, and the challenge is most certainly there. If you expected anything more out of a Contra title (*ahem* Yoshi *cough*) then you obviously missed what Contra was all about.
And I just noticed this in his sig, did I miss a DS release of Metal Slug? I know there was one on GBA, but does that mean the DS ruined it?
Someone tell me what I'm obviously not seeing here...
Yoshi doesn't actually give a shit about Contra, he's just pissed a classic series is on a system he doesn't like.
Metal Slug 7 is in development for the DS.Quote:

Statistical nightmare, IMO.
I'd play it, but I'm not rewarding Konami financially for putting it on the absolute worst available platform. I'll pick it up used or from a bargain bin in January. It's not that it is impossible to have a good game on the DS. It's tat it's impossible to make a game on the DS that wouldn't be better somewhere else.
Yoshi, just buy the damn game.
You're not throwing money at Konami to be lazy, you're paying for what amounts to a lost 16 bit gem, the series golden era before it went to shit on 32 bit. It's not ridiculous like Neo Contra (I AM GUERILLA CONTRA!!!! MUHAHAHA!!!) and it has some color unlike Shattered Soldier.
Look at New Super Mario Bros, Contra 4 operates on the same reinventing principle and gets it right; in graphics, sound, and unbelievably in this day and age, challenge. The two screen gimmick even works well.
Contra 4 shows complete dignity to the series, hearing the first few notes of the title theme makes you weep for late 80's/90's gaming again. *-neo
alright so I did miss something. thaqnks.
so the game isn't even out yet and he's already declared that the DS has ruined it... interesting. I wonder where he beta tests all the DS games?
Well executed post sir.
I'm not a big fan of portables but without them theres no way in hell we'd get games like Contra 4, Dracula X Chronicles and New Mario Bros without them.
I really hope that's not true, but there's clearly no evidence to the contrary. I wish one big publisher would take a risk on a 2D console game. I still believe that they would be rewarded.
I dont know why these games just arent published on the virtual stores. Dracula X woulda been right at home on XBLA.
I know Frogacuda's argument is that the development costs of a high res 2D game would be too high to recover through typical XBLA prices. However, Sony has had $40 games on PSN, and Nintendo said that WiiWare game prices will be up to the publishers. Steam is an option as well.
Be strong, Yoshi.
So Canvas Curse would have been better suited to the Gamecube? Liberty City Stories was done better on PS2? Capcom Puzzle World and Planet Puzzle League would have been drastically better on consoles? Lumines + was better than the first?
I could go on, but I don't want to shatter your argument too bad.
I didn't say every game could be done better anywhere else. I said every game could be done better somewhere else.
Canvas Curse would be better on Wii.
Liberty City Stories would be best on PC/PS3.
Capcom Puzzle World would be best on PC/PS3/360.
Planet Puzzle League would be best on Wii.
Lumines would be best on PC/PS3/360.
You're making a stupid argument by naming ports. I'm talking about ground-up development on the right platform.
And Contra 4 would be best on DS. ;)
Hardly. The touch screen is never better than the Wiimote or a mouse, and the dual screens are never better than a widescreen or tate. Thus, nothing can possibly ever be best on DS.
I don't believe the Wii was out when they released Canvas Curse (could be wrong, but I don't think so), and it was perfectly tailored to that system and a great game to boot. Lib City was developed from the ground up for PSP, and it worked much better than porting it to the "more powerful" system (also PS3 was not out then.) The others have been around, yes, but they were put on handhelds, not the new consoles, and worked great.
Picross DS was not a port (although it was an update to a very old game that was also a handheld exclusive), and the prescision required for the larger puzzles would not be better suited to a console like the Wii.
I'm just saying, there seem to be a lot of really good handheld games (whether exclusive or not) that you seem to overlook.
And I don't think you would have liked Contra 4 even if it was on a console.
Pineapple, you just refuse to use logic. The discussion is about every game being developed from the ground up with every current platform available.
The PS2 version of Liberty City Stories would have kicked the shit out of the PSP version if it were not a port. A PS3 version would have been even better.
For like the 8th time, I'm not saying that there aren't good portable games. I'm saying that every single one of them would have been better if they were developed specifically for a console or PC.
How could I possibly eat crow? I have never made one statement about the quality of the game. The fact that the game could be better elsewhere is irrefutable.
And I wouldn't even be posting in this thread anymore had your dumb ass not specifically called me out.
Uh huh.

You guys must be french.
And you still seem to be posting in this thread...
Back to rhetoric I see. Why don't you drive down to Best Buy, pick up the good game, and STFU already.
Sorry, I am not a fan of Ninty crapping on everything for the sake of cheap. Next gen we'll have even cheaper consoles that are about as powerful as a GC with a new gimmick and handhelds that are stuck in the ghetto.
They can go to hell.
Why don't people point out that Yoshi buying the game later on in a bargain bin renders his stance irrelevant.
If you're giving a store any money for handheld shit at any time, you're supporting their acquisition of said goods. Until you never exchange your money for handheld shit under any circumstances, you're just as bad as the people who have already purchased it.
Message to Konami: No one buys good Contra games. More Legacy of War plz. (on a REAL CONSOLE omg)
Bullshit. Retailers consider games they have to clearance as failures and will adjust their ordering of future titles accordingly. Konami takes the same hit either way.
edit: And Yeller proves again that he has no ability to grasp the fucking point.
If someone robs a truck full of DSes and games and you buy it from them at a flea market, you are supporting someone by exchanging your money for handheld shit.
Despite the fact that no manufacturer will see a penny of the money, you are still supporting a market where the sale of handheld shit occurs. You give a message to other people that there are still idiots out there who want to buy handheld shit. Until you and everyone else stops doing this, the market will live. This market must die. So don't help it live.
Or at very least stop pretending to care about handheld shit existing if you're going to buy it anyway.
Fair enough. I'm so glad to read a reply with a shred of logic in it in this thread that I'll accept your point, dog$.
So are you going to buy this and SH Origins or aren't you?
I understand and sympathize with both sides of the argument but I think Yoshi's crusade will only hurt him in the long run. If this is a good game on DS, and sells well, then I cant see Konami not trying to bring an iteration of it to next gen consoles at some point.
I mean, I see the result of Contra DS not selling well as leading to Konami thinking, "no one wants Contra, its past its prime, lets try out a new IP instead". I doubt they would think, "Contra DS isnt selling well, lets do Contra 360/PS3 instead"
But, thats just my opinion. Do we have any other proof in the industry to support either idea? Trauma Center was successful and made the leap to Wii (not next gen but still - and it is just a port - and I think it was brought to the Wii because of its game mechanics NOT from popularity). We still have yet to see Advance Wars, Phoenix Wright, or anything else make the jump to consloes from being successful. Were there any games/series that did horrible on DS and then were brought to a console instead?
Me personally, Ill support whatever game on whatever console if its a good game. Next gen or not. I wont sacrifice my having fun on a "portable system strike" unless I can be shown proof that it would make a difference. It wont just "die" out at this point. That wont happen unless the videogame industry as a whole crashes realistically.
There's next to no chance I am buying this. I haven't turned on my DS is months. SHO I won't buy until I finish Dracula X, and may take longer than my attention span for SHO, given how many console and PC games are getting play time over the PSP.
I understand your point, but where's the 2D console Castlevania then? We've had tons of portable ones that have sold, but that still hasn't happened. If the DS Contra selling will bring 3D console games of similar quality to the PS2 Castlevanias, that's even more reason to not buy it.
For anyone who's actually playing the game:
Do you know how to beat the big fish boss at the end(?) of stage 5?
I can't even seem to hurt the thing no matter where I shoot it.
I know how to not buy Neo Contra, so if Konami continues to want to make stupid decisions, let them go bankrupt.
If Contra 4 not selling means this is the last Contra game, I would accept it.
Nothing is eternal. Everything dies eventually.
Exactly. When the best game in the series is 13 years old, you could make an argument it's already dead.
until there are no more games, then you really can't.
well, you might, but that doesn't mean much at this point.
I always assumed the 3-D 'vanias were a result of Sony stiff-arming Konami and Iga into making 3-D games and not 2-D ones. I remember this was commonplace knowledge that Sony was doing this a few years ago. I have no idea if Sony is still doing this (the Drac-X remake makes me think , 'yes') or if Microsoft has similar objectives with what they expect a game should be.
Sony had no such practice in Japan, and I don't buy that they'd stiff arm Konami at all and risk losing MGS to Microsoft.
That's really, uh, deep and all, but I feel like denying yourself a gameplay experience you'd enjoy because of this psychotic, rabid anti-portable hatred might be a little bit foolish. But since life is so short, I can definitely understand why you want to take high resolution over gameplay.
You're assuming that we would enjoy playing on a 2" screen and with a questionable d-pad.
To each their own. I do think the 3D graphics of the DS are shit, PSone, Saturn, N64 level 3D is a layer of hell in it's own. But between the 2D games and the "gimmick" the port has earned it's keep just fine. A few more developers seem to be embracing 2D gaming on the system too, so the system looks more interesting than a year ago to me. And really outside of ports and 2.5 how many 2D games have we gotten on PSP? Off the top of my head Loco Roco (if it counts) and a redrawn Twinbee port on a Konami shooter collection. Don't get me wrong the PSP is a great system, but the DS was bought because it was cheaper (much cheaper) and offered something different.
As far as the Wii is concerned, it was geared as a niche system and it works fine graphic-wise, whores will disagree naturally. We really did need another HD supercomputer with 10 exclusives to it's name (8 of which first party), and yet another platform for third parties to get a port on to recoup the 10 million dollar development cost and 3 years of work? Don't get me wrong, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are great systems but the Wii was cheaper and offered something different.
*ahem* Now Contra 4 or bust.
*-neo
No, we didn't need another console. We need Nintendo to stop making hardware all-together.
The PSP d-pad is questionable without a doubt. I've never been a fan of Nintendo's d-pads though.
shoot its eye after it fires the laser beam (stick to whatever side of the screen it dashes away to, because it returns on that side and the laser is avoided easy plus it sets the shot up perfectly); it'll launch its back spikes and send those little fishes up, both are easily avoidable and/or shootable
as soon as all its back spikes are gone it'll die, then you're off to that fuckhole of a berg known as the City level
Life is just too short to accept anything else. http://www.electricbreakfast.com/lj/emot-downs.gif
Good thing the big i-word is expected of developers and not hardware manufacturers.Quote:
Expected answer. The horizon of gaming is simply more power, MORE POWER!
Lack of innovation would probably drive me out of gaming
I agree. And I really wished for Drac X that I could have used the analog nubbin, even though it's a piece of shit, just because it would be better. I have no problems whatsoever with the DS, it has done well by me and provided me with many entertaining hours of gameplay, about 150x moreso than say, the PS3. Hell, even my PSP, which has had about 10 good games since it came out, has drastically outplayed it. Handhelds will not die, not for a long time, and as long as Sony and Nintendo are making huge bank off of their portable systems, saying things like "...should stop making hardware altogether." is about as retarded as anything you could say. Obviously, there's a small handful of people who think you're very wrong.
