Nevermind - Yes you are.
You can only use AT&T with it, right? Kinda homo-ish.
Artard.
I agree with Chux.
I drove past an AT&T store this morning on the way to work. There was a line of assholes out there in the rain waiting and waiting...
And honestly, I don't see the big deal about the fucking iPhone. All the fancy shit it does are just bells and whistles. I mean, I have an iPod. I have a cell phone that gets internet access so I can check email and browse the web. I have the essentials covered.
Yes. It's a stupid business decision.
I have AT&T so that's not a dealbreaker for me, but the price and shitty 1st gen Hardware is.
I'll take a V4 or so though.
yeah its stuck on at&t but the service in the Washington DC area is on par with verizon (i was surprised), and I'm not one of the tards waiting in the rain, i am in a air conditioned mall :)
omg dc lol.
Which mall?
I'm in DC too... want to pick one up for me?
a big complaint on paul thurotts site is the way they incorporated a software keyboard instead of an actual, tactile one.
Furthermore. Fuck $499 WITH a 2 year agreement, and no phone insurance.
1st gen scratced screens imo.
What The iPhone Doesn't Have:
• Songs as Ringtones
• Games
• Any flash support
• Instant Messaging
• Picture messages (MMS)
• Video recording
• Voice recognition or voice dialing
• Wireless Bluetooth Stereo Streaming (A2DP)
• One-size-fits-all headset jack (May have to buy an adapter for certain headphones)
Stuff we already knew it didn't have
• 3G (EV-DO/HSDPA)
• GPS
• A real keyboard
• Removable battery
• Expandable Storage
• Direct iTunes Music Store Access (Over Wi-Fi or EDGE)
lawwwwl.
Jesus Fuck, that's bad.
I can't believe that you can't use songs as ringtones. That's going to have my mind in circles for weeks. I love Apple, but fuck this phone.
It will when they shrink the phone to the size of a baby penis.
I don't understand how there's no voice dialing. Even Verizon doesn't lock that out.
It has a camera. No video though.
Fuck the iPhone.
but it has widgets!
I'm still getting one. Suck it.
Not getting an iPhone but half the things it's missing can be added later through software.
haters for hates sake imo...
I want to know why thier wasting THEIR FUCKING TIME ON A GOD DAMN PHONE, when they could be developing the perfect portable gaming system.
pentagon city mall, there will be haters but i am coming from a blackberry so i am reserved, we will see.
I want an iPhone. Screw the haters.
Virgins are a neat idea... but I prefer a woman who knows how to fuck.
7th to 10th generation imo...
I want an LG Prada.
Wake me up when you can use one of these as a tiny Sketchbook Pro handheld.
Just so you guys are aware, there is an open-sourced product out there that could give the iPhone a run for its money. Think of the iPhone, only remove every shitty feature it has. What you have left is OpenMoko.
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS8509737406.html
delayed again
lol!
I get one for free, yo. <3
open source has a tendency to be amazing (Firefox, Apache, SVN, etc) or utter trash. There's rarely an inbetween. So I have my doubts about an open source phone platform. I had a Sharp Zaurus, and that thing was a piece of shit. Great hardware coupled with buggy, incompatible, pain in the ass open source software does not a good product make.
Original iPod launched at $499. And... well, we know how that turned out.
Also, just to be clear, the iPod has text messaging. It doesn't have iChat for things like AIM or MSN conversations. But, I mean, aren't there services for text-to-IM solutions for the time being anyhow?
The advertising campaign for this has been insane. There's no way it will flop.
I think it's really lame that the battery isn't removable. Also, I'd probably be freaking out about the screen all the time (I still have the original plastic cover on the screen of my iPod).
I hate everything being i-this and i-that.
I'm buying my gf an i-dickinabox for christmas this year.
iAwtp
iBTN
i.... shit.
Ibegtodiffer
I-f you buy one of these, you are a complete idiot that rivals the Nintendouche patrol.
iBELIEVE ... Chux iS a monster.
And Joust iS an iDIOT.
it seriously doesn't have integrated instant messaging?
seriously?
what's the point?
There's no "i" in "team."
You mean...talk? omg!
The only time I ever used texting was in Europe. THeir charge system is all weird, so it's way cheaper to just send text messages than make calls.
In the US, texting is for 11 year olds and women. You fucking fairies
Go get a tan, you European sissy.

Some nutjob snatches Fox News reporter Laura Ingle's mike while she is about to introduce Steven Levy and have him demonstrate the iPhone. The bastard shouts "Gimme that fuckin' mike. Don't fuckin' mess with me." Once security deals with him, the show goes on as planned.
It doesn't look bad, but $600 (screw the $500 cut-down model)? I'll wait awhile. Too bad it doesn't support Verizon as a carrier. I'm not interested in selling my soul to AT&T.
Again, it doesn't (currently) have instant messaging to services like AIM, MSN, Google Talk, etc. It has e-mail, it has standard phone text messaging.
Played with one today... you'd really have to be a jerk-off to not admit that it's an amazing little piece of technology. There are certainly things that it can/needs to do better - I want more than 8GB of storage, Google Maps is nice but it really needs GPS, why no ability to record video?, etc. - but at the same time man does it do so many other things so well.
And seeing the reactions people were having to it, and the fact that there was a line (at a dinky little AT&T store) to just look at it, I'm going to be shocked if it flops.
I'm now on my fourth cell phone over the years. And each time I get a new one I have never once looked at the available cell phones and found one that "just worked" and was a truly great piece of hardware/software. No, not even the beloved Razor. So if the iPhone ultimately means that Apple does to phones what they did to computers and mp3 players, then a big fat thank you goes to them.
I think for the hype they are giving it. and the money people are paying for it. Not having simple things like IM, songs for ringtones and the ilk. just doesnt seem right. i meen rinky dink pre pay phones from virgin mobile have songs for ringtones. ill pass and get a blackjack instead.
JBNagis
Ummm.
Whether you like them or not, Hub was pretty much spot on about Apple...
The razor is not and has never been "beloved".
To the general population it is. For the past year or so it has been the phone to have; whether it's of any quality or not. When I bought my new phone I had anyone and everyone coming up to me and saying "what? You didn't get a razor?"
Sounds like the iPhone will take that position next, except when it comes to actually turning the phone into a decent product, I have a lot more faith in Apple than Motorola.
I prefer Macs the way they are. We already have a PC market like we do. There's room for Mac-style market too. OS X is the operating system I recommend for people who buy computers to check their e-mail and surf the web. They won't have to worry about spyware or anything. You aren't wrong on a lot of the stereotypes, though. There is an elitist culture surrounding their shit that kind of bugs me. But working in the design industry you learn to get used to it.
QFT. If 10.5 doesn't bring serious improvements, Apple has lost me as well. My MacBook Pro was not worth what it cost, and in OS X, it doesn't perform anywhere near as well as the system ought to. I've been running Vista on it full time for a while now. Not positive that I'll go back.
What bad? The price? Macs are far more cost competitive now than they were ten years ago. And to me the extra cost is more than worth it. Other than the price, what is this misery that is Mac?
The excellent ergonomics? The attention to detail? The kick ass OS? The fact that pretty much all Unix oriented software just works as is? X, SSH, Apache, Ruby, Perl, Bash, gcc and Java 5 right out of the box? Not having any viruses or malware?
First party only software? Huh? Where did that come from? Oh, games maybe? If you want to play games, don't buy a Mac. Or at least, don't use OSX. That's pretty obvious. I couldn't care less about computer games.
Sure, OSX is not nearly as compliant interface wise as Classic was, and I do miss that. But what else is better? What else even comes close? I'd argue Ubuntu, and hell, it's free. Windows? Haha, don't make me laugh :)
So, what is this bad? Price and lack of games. That's the best I can come up with. Or maybe Apple's a big bad corporation that screws over its customers? Please, and MS doesn't do that? At least Apple delivers the goods.
Excellent ergonomics and attention to detail? Uh... okay. Hope you're not talking about hardware. The pitting on my MacBook Pro's finish is certainly not what I'd call good attention to detail... nor is the grainy-as-shit display that Apple refuses to acknowledge is a problem. Same shitty slot-loading drives that choke on discs that tray loaders are fine with. Second Apple laptop in a row where hard drive failure hit within 6 months, too. Oh, and come on. OS X has supported two button mice forever. Give us another button on the laptops. I'm not talking about some Mighty Mouse piece of shit either. Two real buttons. At least there is a way to right click with the trackpad now, though it shouldn't be this fucking hard. I've been using Apple laptops for years, and I'm used to ctrl+click... but that doesn't mean I don't think there's a better way.
Nevermind the fact that the only standalone version of 10.4 available is PPC only, and each product Apple makes has its own set of install discs that don't work with other computers. Traveling when disaster strikes? Too bad. It's not like the Intel machines are new... there's no excuse. And there's no excuse that everything should run as slow as it does. A lot of things in OS X still feel sluggish compared to Windows, and on this hardware, it's inexcusable.
And then comes Macworld where Steve Jobs comes out and says "We're not going to talk about the Mac today." Instead he pitches shitty consumer electronics. That's the new Apple.
If 10.5 hits without any serious performance improvements or that Finder rewrite we've so desperately needed, I can't really see myself doing this again.
I'm at the point where all of my experiences with Macs have ended in misery. I'm not trying to argue how great they are now and their features. Funnily enough I have never even tried to game on one.
First party software and such: I don't want to have to modify anything to make it work with my computer. I don't want software that updates itsself and doesn't ell me exactly what changes are being made. Also I HATE being forced to spend money just to keep my computer running and to enjoy all its features. I think that's bullshit. It's like if you went to a bowling alley and had your own shoes and ball and they said, "You can't bring that stuff in here, you have to buy our shoes and balls (lol) to play here until next week when we introduce more expensive but prettier ones."
If I can make one more simile here; It seems we aren't arguing the same thing at all. If apple was a restaurant down the street and every time you went there you got great service and a great experience you'd keep going back right? Well every time I went there the prices went up, my food was frozen and the service was slower than my grandfather trying to get out of a car.
Ok, tell me some alternatives then. Linux? Good luck finding a nice Linux distro that doesn't hound you to update packages all the time. Windows? Uhh, Windows Update? My work machine runs Windows Update just shy of daily. Self updating software is pretty much a fact of life now. Taking that out on Apple is a bit ridiculous. Software Update in OSX doesn't tell anymore or less about what is going on than Windows Update does...
Kinda like how DirectX 10 only runs on Vista? Give me a break, MS is just as good at doing this as Apple is, if not better. If you don't want to pay money for software, Linux is available. And hell, Linux is really damn good now.Quote:
Also I HATE being forced to spend money just to keep my computer running and to enjoy all its features. I think that's bullshit.
Apple and MS have very different philosophies. MS probably spent a month making sure VisiCalc works in Vista. Apple drops the old for the new all the time (I think three major processor families in the life of the Mac alone is proof of that). That's just how they are. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches. If you don't want to buy OS updates regularly, then either don't (believe it or not your Mac won't explode) or get a different OS.
I'm pretty sure I'm the last person alive that still uses payphones
Let me give you an example. One of my friends records a song and emails it to me. I put it on my itunes. The next day Itunes updates its self. All of a sudden my friend's song won't play in Itunes. Apple decided they should get a chunk of change for any media that will be played through their software. Itunes is reason enough to dismiss them regardless of all this.
I'm not gushing over vista. I'm just not satisfied with Apple. If you're telling me there are no alternatives then you're doing the exact thing that I hate about them.
I'm saying they rewrite software to make it incompatible with media you did not dl from the itunes store. True story, it already happened to me with my videos and its only a matter of time before they do it to music (as per my exaggeration). That's why it was an example
Before I go any further, I have had too many bad experiences with Apple to give them any more money. Please don't waste any more time trying to prove a moot point. What's in the past can not be undone. I'm only speaking for myself. I'm not telling you not to buy an Apple. I'm just relaying some personal experience which led me to my current standpoint. That is all.
Yea its a conspiracy to stop me from listening to my .mp3's in itunes :wtf: Seeing how I've been using it for years and never had a problem with any .mp3. The only trouble I've ever had is sometimes a video podcast will only play the sound and the screen will be white, which I think is some sorta quicktime problem on my comp.
Sarcasm = useless. In reality I converted some shows and movies I already had on my computer so I could play them on my ipod. Everything worked fine until I updated my ipod and itunes software. None of my videos worked. I tested everything, reconverted everything, then downloaded a free podcast from itunes store. It worked perfectly. Once I rolled back all the updates my videos worked again. So yeah, that's shady.
I'm so close to just posting pics of animals humping in here I swear to god.
I spent about 2K on a g4 powerbook titanium when it was new. About 6 months later the screen started flickering, and now the entire machine won't even turn on. What's apple's take on this? Not our fault. You need to get a new logic board - that'll be 1K. I really love how it's been proven to be a manufacturing flaw now, but they still won't acknowledge it. Thanks for essentially stealing $2000 from me Apple. They can get fucked. I'll never buy one of their machines again.
I heard that when Apple made this phone that they wouldn't allow the service providers to lock out any features, which was why only AT&T went along with them.
Aside from all the flaws it looks to have, I'll give them respect for that.
Its probably the same problem as having old codec's and not being able to view movies. Apple updates their quicktime to newer verisons, just like MS updates their video compression and sound. Now that you mention it, I did have some of my old video podcasts quit working after an update, then some that didn't work before started working.
Nope. I searched tons of message boards on this and everyone that had this problem came up with the same solution. I even tried several new video conversion programs at the time thinking it was a codec or bitrate issue but it was most definitely not.

"I heard that when Apple made this phone that they wouldn't allow the service providers to lock out any features "
It does not seem like there are any. T-Mobile Dash.
I love how torgo completely ignores Graves post and continues to rave on about how great apple are with his inane "macs are good because i don't like windows" arguement.
Most of his argument has actually been that OS X is just as bad as Windows, which makes Apple great. I'm not sure the head is removable from the ass at this point.
