I still think that some genres, or even just games within genres, benefit from movement being constrained to a 2D plane. No lock on feature you could ever dream up will replace that feel. No jumping will ever be that precise and no camera will ever be that agreeable. As for 2.5D and it's interpretation of what I described above, why bother making it look like something it isn't (hurting the overall look in the process I might add).
