And yet we have people speculating it was a "lost child, searching for its mom" anyway. People want to know about the monster, this thread is proof of that.

This isn't just "Whaaa! I need everything spelled out for me." It's because the monster is a lot more interesting than Rob and that chick he fucked one time. And this isn't a movie about the monster, it's a movie about a bunch of poorly developed, badly acted assholes I could give a fuck about.

I'm not saying this needed to use the worst of the cold war-era B-movie cliches, but the basic arc of a monster movie tells the story of the monster and his struggle with humanity (be that monster good, evil, or neither).

I honestly disagree 100% with this. This 'is' a modern Godzilla/Kong film in it's most pure essence. It's just not shot in the same way that all the monster movie loving nerds expected. Here we have no scientist saving the day, no reporter's point of view, no long exposition based on the origins via a military adviser or the president...but in the end you know that all of those stories are indeed happening; it's just that we don't see ANY of it.

And that's what I appreciate. It's an honest to god monster movie, without all the bullshit that makes them lame as fuck. I don't need 30 minutes dedicated to it's origins, or to Matthew Broderick running around trying to solve the problem. That shit has been done countless times and it has NEVER added to the film in any way whatsoever. Now, this perspective should be a one time usage - as we never need to see a monster movie from the "average joe" POV again, but for this one time it worked perfectly.

As far as the acting goes? They did a brilliant job. These people were the elite hipster douchebags you can't stand in real life, and there was no better way for them to act. You don't get "loveable" or "relateable" out of mid-20 something hipster kids(especially shitty rich ones living in 2000sq ft lofts in NY), which is why the audience is supposed to relate to Hud. Some do, some don't. That's a personal thing and it's just the way it is.

Now, as far as people thinking this film is supposed to BE(in a literal sense) our American "Godzilla" or "new Kong"? That's retarded. These people take producer and director quotes out of context and just run with them. This film is what a monster film is supposed to bring about in the audience: Tension, fear, and some laughs. It's the purest essence of a monster film, just shot from a completely different perspective - and it worked.
