The story with my Dad was that he didn't come through Ellis Island from Taiwan, but came to New York to go to NYU for his Master's Degree and then got a job with a company that sponsored his PhD while he gained citizenship. I think the deal was that he changed our last name from Wei to Wey. Like it matters, I still get junk mail with Way, Wex, Wet and sorts of other fuckups. It's only THREE letters, for heaven's sake.

I have the same problem basically. My paternal great grandfather was a master carpenter in Russia, and his dad had a factory that made boots for the Russian Army. They emigrated to America, stopping at London on the way, where my grandfather was born. I can't find any records of anyone from that line past them.
My grandmother was born in what's now Poland, and her line is a mystery as well.
