Harshly punishing rapists, be it with life in prison or execution, is not retribution. It's justice and also protection for the rest of society.

4 Theories of Criminal Justice
Retributive: Punish the wrong doers. Crime = Time.
Preventative/Utility: Punish wronger doers an an example to deter others (less concerned about getting the right so long as an example is made, more good is done by punishing a guilty looking innocent man than letting him go free and punishing no one) We seem to be headed towards this.
Rehabilitative/Utility: Remvoe a wrong doer from society and transform them into someone useful, or at least less likely to repeat their crimes. As well as termporarly removing them from the population. The US has favored this for the last 100 years until recently, we're moving away
Incapacitiative: Removing wrong doers from the population. They tend to favor executions for all felons, as there's no value to letting them go again.
Personally I favor incapacatative at times when there's near undeniable evidence. Otherwise I wouldn't trust the government.
Yeah seriously icarusfall just totally destroyed spodaddy right there.
I never support the death penalty, but often support life in prison with no chance of parole.

I think your rapist should have been executed but I respect your opinion.
He's dead now, and I'd be lying if I told you that doesn't make me a little happy, but I had nothing to do with it.
Logically it makes no sense to be a rebel in a dangerous environment, during times of war, free Americans rally around the flag, in war zones people keep their heads down and try to leave, in prison which is arguably a very dangerous environment. You want to keep your head down, blend it and not be attacked.
