That really doesn't matter cause the movies were never about trying to be like the books. The Bond movies had their own style and thats what people liked about it.Quote:

These are two different vehicles. There are things I like about the new takes that are good. The physical fights between Bond and the thugs are more satisfying. And Craig does a great job of balancing suave with cold killer. Casino Royale was a great example of it. It even had a gadget. This movie is missing elements that Bond for the screen needs and people want to see.Quote:

Well, saw it yesterday, and sadly found it to be mediocre. Maybe its a higher expectations, coming from Casino Royale, or the my dislike towards action films that are plagued by shaky cam, or directors knowing nothing about how to properly do action and instead trying to turn them into pseudo artsy stories of tortured souls (see Max Payne). Again, to sound like a broken record here, IF but the Bonds name and theme wasn't on this, it would have been just an average spy flick of the week, that would have been forgotten after weekend was over.
One similarity I have found with CR, that both that and now Quantum, started on the high notes, with exciting chases, then fell into the lul of storytelling. But where CR at least succeed to pull through (I, unlike many didn't find the poker scenes all that boring), QOS's excitement pretty much stopped DEAD as things got to Bolivia. Couple of action moments sprinkled in the 2nd half, just couldn't give the film, that jolt of excitement that it really needed. I guess the desert and struggles of Bolivian country men about the exhausted water supply, just weren't riveting enough for me.
I do agree that this didn't feel like Bond, and comparison to Bourne flicks is dead on. I will even go as far as say that QSR was better than 2 of Bourne sequels and even maybe on the level of Bourne Identity. Like I said in the opening, here is a perfect example of big budgeted action film, ruined by stupid decision to stick an arty director into the chair. Sure, he added lots of scenes of drama into this, with moody scenes, music ques and some lightning. But the soul of the action film had suffered, from the quick cutting and epileptic shaky cam. Ok, I understand shaking in the foot/jump chase scenes, but with the fucking BOAT sequence? My wife never really complained about this
before, even at Michael Bay's worst, but here at the end of the boat chase she asked my: WTF just happened there, it was cut so fucking quick I couldn't get most of it. The beginning car chase was also cool, but really thrown in just to have an action opening and again, cut to almost to the point of huh wtf is happening there. I can KINDA see 3 cool cars doing something, but not really. Secret Opera meeting started quite well, but once guns started blazing, it was back to WTF is happening moments. As the scenes of guns, opera singers, cooks, bodyguards were roughly mixed in and peppered with good dose of quick cutting and shaky cam trickery. At that time I was ready to yell, drop the art house shit, and give me a Bond action I paid to see.
I did liked Craig, he was very physical, and looked great in the action scenes, especially in the rooftop chase and few of the fights/gunfights, ones that you can actually see things anyways :p But OH MY GOD, why were we given such a pathetic villain. I complained a bit that CR didn't really had a one main villain per say (Africans and Le Chifres were kinda mini bosses), but QSR takes the cake of the ineptitude.
Olga Kurilenko had a bigger part than both Hitman and Max Payne combined, and actually did pretty well, as JB in a skirt. I liked her scenes
and they worked well with Craig. Rest of the cast was less than memorable. Except Manthias, who's story and the end was quite sad. M was just there to be a strict boss with secret heart of gold, and Americans were playing good cia/ bad cia slapstick routine.
I liked the cold/ruthless feel of Bond in this 2 parter. It was a bit of vacation from the usual happy/go lucky suave spy of the Bond from yesterday. But I do agree that with the future installments, I would like a return to that at least in some ways. Gadgets were most sorely missing.
When Green started making those pathetic screams while fighting Bond, I burst into laughing. His gayo henchman had a moment of the show when after he was taught on how to hold the gun, he immediately got dispatched by random explosion.
And please tell me what the fuck was wrong with that desert hotel exactly.
Better luck next time I guess. Just bring back Martin Campbell or hire some other director who can do both drama and action and keep Foster and his
keen away, add and mix some of what made Bond the franchise over the years with the new hip stuff and it might have a chance.
For now, I would rather go re watch CR and Taken to get my spy bad ass kicks.
