Toys'R'Us Being Sued for Racial Discrimination

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two black shoppers have sued Toys "R" Us saying they were subjected to racial discrimination and unjustified scrutiny at a store in New York.

Patricia Drayton and Valerie Kirk said in the lawsuit that the store in The Bronx, a borough of New York City, discriminated against them by asking them to show their sales receipts. The suit was filed in Manhattan Federal Court on Tuesday.

Drayton said in the lawsuit that she was stopped by a security guard at the door of the store and asked to show her receipt. After refusing to do so, she was made to wait while the employee checked with a cashier to see if she had purchased the merchandise, the lawsuit said.

According to court documents, Kirk was told by a man working at the story that Toys "R" Us's policy required that she show her receipt to him prior to leaving the story. Kirk said in the suit that she refused to comply and was banned from shopping there.

The lawsuit said black shoppers are subjected to compulsory inspection of their sales receipts while white shoppers are not.

The women are asking the court to give the suit class action status to represent all black shoppers who have been subjected to the same procedures by Toys "R" Us.

Metro One, which provides loss prevention services to retail stores, and several people employed by the two companies are also being sued by the women.

They are seeking compensatory and punitive damages of at least $200 million each on behalf of the class.

Representatives for Toys "R" Us and Metro One were not available for comment.

It's stupid assholes like this that makes people ignore legit cases of racial discrimination.

Every time I buy something at Best Buy or Circuit City, the guy at the door askes to see my receipt, even if I had just bought my item at the register right in front of him. It's nothing abnormal.

Nowadays it seems that if a business does anything against a black person they open themselves up for a lawsuit. Home Depot enforced a previously-unknown policy and recently fired several employees that caught a black shoplifter, possibly because they were afraid of a lawsuit.

Technically, at least in California, its illegal for a store employee to prevent you from leaving without showing your reciept. A lot of customers at my store (Fry's Electronics) simply dont wait to get their receipt checked and walk out the door.

At Fry's, the doorcheckers get paid on a commision based on catches they make at the door. An overring pays this much, wrong item ring pays this much, etc etc. The service provided at the door is put in place not only to deter theft, but to make sure the stupid cashier didn't over charge you (especially on big items like sound systems and televisions). And believe me, it happens all the damn time.

This lawsuit is pretty funny, imo. These bitches want $200 million just because they were asked to show their receipts. Awesome. How is TWO HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS fucking compensation for this?

I wasn't referring to this case specifically; I get asked for my receipt every time I walk out of Circuit City. It's not an affront on my honor or an anti-Italian practice, it's a general method of discouraging people from stealing shit. There's no reason to refuse to cooperate with it.

It's not about assuming that you're stealing. It's about demonstrating to prospective thieves that there's a good chance they'll get caught. Effective loss prevention programs allow businesses to pass on the savings to the customer; why would you be against reasonable loss prevention programs if you're not a thief?

That analogy makes no sense; stores aren't detaining everyone in the building if they don't turn in shoplifters. Checking receipts is just a more direct version of the anti-theft alarms at the door; are those offensive to you as well?

The fact of the matter is that most black people(as in black women) feel that if you ask them to do something they dont feel like doing its racist. it happened to my friend and it happend to me. A black lady called me racist cus i helped a white lady before her. being asked for your receipt is standard for just about every retail store i know of. I think those ladies need to get over themselves.

It happened to me recently. I stopped a Walmart and on line in front of me were two rowdy black women. They were yelling, throwing items out of their cart and onto the floor, giving the girl working the register problems (she was black, too). As a former retail store whore - yes, most of them do. It's NYC for christ's sake. You don't think it's reasonable to assume that there is an above-average amount of shady people doing shady things in that city - including a Toys 'R' US? As lame as the process is, it is what it is, and the security guys were probably just doing their jobs. I'm willing to bet that it was a black security guard (you don't hear any mention of him being white, which would add more fuel to the "Racist" tone of the claim)
