Yeah, our system is clearly fucked up, we all know it, this needs to happen. I'm really disappointed none of the democratic candidates are pushing this issue.
I had a really long discussion last week about this. We all kinda left on this note.
Do you really think OUR government is going to run healthcare any better?
Its a fucked up system right now yes it is.
This is the crux of disenfranchisement in this country.
And yes, our government can. Every other government in the first world has done it, and many beyond that. We shouldn't just decide "we're all fuck ups, let's sit around and wait to die."
We trust the government to deliver our mail, educate our children, put out our fires, fight our wars, and protect our innocent. Why not trust them with healthcare?

c. Technically, we're all one serious illness from bankrupting our families. If you miss 2 months of work (assuming work provided health care), virtually no company will continue insurance unless compelled to by law. Personally I expect any for-profit hmo/ppo to choose denying me care than say pay for cancer treatment.
Why? Because you're sick, cannot pay (or earn) the premiums and they're not compelled to keep you on the books. As a stockholder its exactly what I'd want them to do, cut the unnecessary costs and unprofitable ventures from the budgets.
Sick people are unprofitable ventures.

Honestly, Adam Smith's invisible hand of the market only works when you can say no. Otherwise the market cannot and will not self regulate.
It will take Americans being willing to see an enormous amount of power being taken out of private hands and put into public ones. Because anything short of that is just another Trojan horse for insurance companies extortion schemes. Nearly two decades of anti-government rhetoric from pro-business lobbies in both major parties has poisoned the publics' mind to look upon any government program with both fear and disdain.
It's a big hump to get over, even with people suffering and dying due to lack of insurance or being defrauded by their carrier.
Okay.
I'm saying it again. Whoever wants to give everyone healthcare gets my vote. I don't give a damn who it is.
Bush wants to run this experiment in Iraq for another 12 years? Fine. I can be bought off with coverage for everyone.
I'm all for improved healthcare. I've run into so much bullshit this past year with my own it made me realize that the system sucks as-is. I work for a pharmaceutical rep, too, which now makes me angry. Can't exactly agree with their practices...
