SNES Yellowing how to s top it or prevent it?

Well my SNES yellowed pretty bad i think i read some where it was caused from sunlight (my window is right behind where my systems and all are so they get alot of sun)

so i got another SNES system (no wires just the system) that is MINT i mean ths thing looks like it just came off the assembly line so its not yellowed or anything

anyone know how i can prevent it from happening

right now i have it wrapped up in like 2 bags and hidden from any and all light till i have a set up that doesnt get sunlight

I am fairly sure that the chemistry of the air in your home would have some effect as well. Perhaps the yellow is caused by some kind of biological substance, like a mold or mildew, that is induced to grow by the sun.

I would recommend using a mild to strong cleaning solution on your SNES shell (try to take the guts out to protect them). Maybe even a fine-grain sandpapering would do the trick.

The best answer would be to talk to a plastics engineer of some kind. Try looking up the faculty of a university to find contact info...

Its not a good idea to have your games or systems exposed to much direct sunlight anyways.

there's really nothing you can do to really prevent the yellowing. it's the plastic's fault. it reacts with the air and dust. nintendo's later shipment of snes had a different type of plastic that didn't yellow. i guess you could track down one of those.

Yeah. I used to manage a Funcoland, and let me tell ya, I've seen HUNDREDS that turn out like that. I don't think there's anything you can do about it.

hmmm crapolla my room gets a shit load of dust (and it screws up my allergies) because im the last room in the air conditioning system so all the shit gets dumped into my room

hmm i thnk i need to get an air tight container for this snes till the day i can controll the air in the room


hmm i also wonder if thisis one of the older model ones that doesnt change (the one i just picked up)

Perhaps you could go the route of Bubble Boy and enclose your SNES in an airtight bubble?

It would be really nice if someone came up with a solution to prevent the yellowing. Perhaps coating the new console in a clear coat of ...*something*... would prevent air exposure and the eventual yellowing.

My SNES, which I have had since 1991, is still pretty close to its original colour.

It's been kept out of the sunlight.


Direct exposure to sunlight is the PRIMARY reason the damn thing chages colour.

There's more to it than sunlight exposure. My SNES has never seen contact with direct sunlight at all and it has yellowed a lot.

Well I have had my SNES since I was in kindergarden (I'm in 8th grade now) and I have to say that it has yellowed very *slightly*. I HAVE had it in the sun but not TOO much, normally its in a black box with tinted windows (my entertainment center) and I also *highly* doubt the air content has anything to do with it. I have bought 2 or 3 used games and they either have the front or back yellowed from what i am proposing is the direction which they were facing the sun. I think its just like fading, except its yellow instead of faded lol!

I don't think it has anything to do with sunlight. Because I have never seen one with like a blotch of yellowing. Its always parts of the SNES that are yellow, all the way around. Like just the battom part is yellow and thats all. Or just the top, or just the controller ports. At least thats all I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of Yellowed SNESs. It is very odd though. It must be somesort of mildue or mold or something though.

Mine is still grey and it's been around since 92/93.

Clear Coats puts a sheen on the plastic that is decidedly undesireable.
