Anyone else pick up DQIV this week?
I've put about 5 hours in so far and I'm about half way through the 2nd chapter. So far I haven't noticed any major changes but I love the look they went with. I kinda wish they had taken the same approach to FF III & IV and not gone totally 3D.
Picked it up yesterday afternoon. Loved it way back in the day, and loving it more now. Excellent.
crud. i won't be able to get this for a while. what are the extras?
Just about done with the second chapter, loving it even more than the last one.
The prologue is from the PS version? Thought it was something made for the DS version.
Picked it up yesterday, but had to go through HELL to do it. Well, well worth it though. The last time I've beaten this game was around NES release. I've played it several times since then, but for some reason quit on ch. 5.
I picked it up yesterday as well. I won't play it; however, until I complete FFIV DS.
I'm all for relieving the contemporary player of the need to grind for hours to progress in a DQ game, but does anyone else feel like they dialed the difficulty down a little too much here?
Seems like it's a little easy, but then again, I'm playing it the way Aeana suggested on GAF - Explore all the map and dungeons, use items, use buffs and debuffs. Don't Grind. It's a lot more fun. I usually play RPGs by selecting "fight" for everybody, do heavy grinding, and save for all the most expensive shit at every town for every character. This is a lot less tedious and a different experience for me.
I don't think I could play other RPGs like Vesperia that way, though.
Really? Cause SuikoFan108 on RPGamer said to do the direct opposite. I'm all confused now. Maybe Aerithnotaeris72 on ffextreme can solve this dilemma!
Huh what.
Is this out here already?
It is! Complete with wacky phonetic accents! At least it kind of makes sense unlike the character in the France-set Jeanne D'Arc speaking with a French accent, but it's still distracting and annoying. The Scottish accent in Ragnar's chapter was fucking brutal.
Remind me to pee on Chrono Cross for starting this. And Andrew Vestal and company for praising it.
Man thats cool Im gonna have to check it out. So I'm guessing its good then from all the responses? Is it better than FF remakes?
Try playing it my way, smart-ass. You'll enjoy it more.
I can't believe we've been waiting 6 motherfucking years for this shit. It's been worth it. It was slated to drop on PSOne, but didn't the developer go under who was working on it?

I'm quite enjoying not playing it at all.
Some Stupid Japanese Name from TNL.
Enix's USA publishing house closed just before DQIV was slated to print.
Word at the time was that the developer ran off with the source code, so Enix canned the USA port.
I thought it was in the Japanese PSX version, but I would have to double-check on that one. Either way, it's just a brief intro stroll around the town before Chapter 1.
What I've played so far is considerably easier, but reviews seem to indicate that the difficulty ramps up in the second half.
Either way, I'll take it as a nice breather after the brutal fucking gauntlet we call the FFIV DS remake.
do they keep things from the more recent dragon quest games? like...can you select a monster within a group like in dq8, or is it the old style pick a group random attack thing?
Old style
Yeah, it's the old style. Thankfully, they've given the player complete control over the party in Chapter 5, as opposed to the strategy bullshit in the original game.
hmmm...i would've liked to see them go with the more recent approach to fighting monsters, but it's good to hear there's no more ai only controls for the characters. can you switch that on or off, though? and...i'm guessing you still can't control heally, right?
I haven't gotten to chapter 5 yet so I don't know if the old A.I. is an option or not. But unfortunately you still can't control Healie.
Does this still happen if you control the party?Quote:
Tubby merchant Torneko Taloon, the game's most popular character, embodies Dragon Quest IV's subversive appeal. He's hardly your typical RPG hero, yet his chapter is far more engrossing as any standard RPG tale. He begins by tending shop and labors toward a final "battle" that consists of a mission to fulfill a requisition order; once he joins the hero's party, he becomes an unpredictable goof-off, as likely to distract the enemy with a "naff gag" (or trip and accidentally inflict a critical blow on an enemy) as he is to follow your directions. He adds an element of humanity to the story, comedy to the dialogue, and risk to the combat -- risk that isn't without its occasional rewards. In my playthrough, he unexpectedly stole one of the most powerful swords in the game from a bad guy hours before I would have come across it in normal play, making the middle stretch of the adventure markedly less stressful.
Finally got around to beating Ch.5 on this game. I usually skip out on the bonus dungeons, but I like this game enough to play ch. 6, but not now. I still have to beat Tales of Vesperia,
That last boss was a bitch. Took me 4 tries to kill the bastard. If you don't use Meena's Insulate spell, you're pretty much fucked and you lose.
Fun game though. Took me 26 hours to beat. It's the first time I've throughly explored all the dungeons and looted them out.
I think I might actually dust off and play DQ8 on the PS2 with my Slime Controller. Haven't touched it in 3 years. It would feel fresh if I played it again.
So is this worth the 40 bones? I want a new DS game to play at work
I wouldn't say it's hands-down better than the original, but it's good enough.
I stole it from Rem and pooped on it.
You know what sucks? trying to understand what the people in this game are saying. We're in the year 2008, no more early SNES quality transrations.
DQIV has a fantastic translation that is quite easy to read. I fail to see how the year 2008 has any bearing on the translator's mindset. We only hope that V and VI are treated with as much respect.
Don't you lie to me!
'kay, maybe early SNES-era quality is a stretch, but besides Torneko's item appraisals, it's way dry and not awesome compared to even Rocket Slime Adventures.
DQIV is $19.99 brand new at amazon.com now. Hard to go wrong at that price.
The translation is excellent; my only gripe was that the Chrono Crossesque dialects got annoying after a while. But compared to the old NES script ("The shy is ominous. I'm afraid the Ruler of Evil will resurrect.") it's fucking poetic.
There are a few lines in the game that make me cringe, i'll bring up specifics next time i run into one. Nothing like "This guy are sick" or "I saw a girl falling down from Baron", but i'm expecting a lot more than what i'm getting after Dragon Quest VIII's delightful pudding.
VIII had the benefit of some very nice voice acting YANGUS!. I addressed it a bit not longer after it dropped; I could have done without the dialects (it doesn't play as well in written form as they would have liked), and more interaction/emotion between the star characters would have made it perfect, but even by modern standards it's not a bad script... and compared to 15 years ago, it's superb.
Thanks for the heads up. I was going to order it this morning, but they jacked the price back up, dammit. I should have ordered it yesterday.
By the way, they have Children of Mana for 9.99, with one left. I was going to pad it to the DQ4 order for free shipping.
Dragon Quest 5 has a US date - Feb. 17th, 2009! My birthday! Same day you can't use your old TVs w/o a converter box too!
Excellent news! I can't wait.
What's going to happen if you wait?
shit. more games to buy.
This one's okay.
I didn't realize they'd be able to put it out so soon. Label me excited.
Too many RPGs to play... I just got Final Fantasy III, I'm just about to get Dragon Quest IV, I still need to pick up Final Fantasy IV, and Chrono Trigger comes out next week. Oh well, the games I haven't played before will take priority.
if they keep releasing them at this pace we'll have dq6 by summer. i'm gonna have to borrow dq4 from my friend and never give it back.
ahaha. well, this friend has beaten the game and is done playing it. when i say borrow i actually mean take. i'm gonna take it from him. but i'll ask first of course.
also, if they ever get around to remaking dq7 i hope the graphics take on the dq9 or joker style. i'd be pissed if it looked the same.
You'll never beat it anyway!
y...YES I WILL! they said i'd never beat etrian odyssey but i showed them!
edit: wait...what won't i beat? dq4 or dq7? you're probably right about 7.
DQ7. REMEMBER. REMEMBER WHEN YOU DELETED THE SAVE? IT SPUN AND SPUN. YOU COULD'VE SAVED IT FROM BEING DELETED, BUT SOMETHING INSIDE TOLD YOU NOT TO.
...how COULD you! of COURSE i remember
this is why i won't take that bitch back unless she shows up with some new clothes on.
I don't like portables but LOVE the DQ games. Is there any possible way to play DS games on your big screen TV? Any adapter or cable or something?
no, 'cause you can't touch your tv. hm...will we see a super gameboy type thing ever again? that makes me sad.
You can't touch your TV, but can't you do a rough equivalent with the Wiimote? You aim your "stylus" with the wiimote, press the A button to "touch" the screen and release the A button to lift the stylus. Nunchuk replaces the d-pad, other wiimote buttons replace the DS buttons... I think it's possible.
i wouldn't wanna see 2 screens squished into my tv, though. unless it's some mix of gameplay on big screen with touch screen on ds still functional.
These look horrible.
Geese took Lauribelle.
Or if you had a widescreen TV, but somehow put it on its side, and used a Wiimote... maybe then it could work.
that's...so much extra work.
That would be the best solution for most games, but some games use both screens.
It's a shame. I don't think the dual screens and the touch screen added anything to the DS. If they'd just used one screen, it would have sold just as well IMO. Unlike the Wii, where the controls sold the system and actually adds something to certain games.
Bump for Dragon Quest V coming out in the U.S. today. Anybody else? I've only been waiting 13+ years to play this in English (no I don't like fantranslations).
I have to admit I'm not thrilled about the pokemon aspect of this game, but the story sounds pretty good.
i only played a little of the fan stanslation back in the day. i think this game has one of my fave dq sound tracks. i'll probably end up waiting until i can get it cheaper, though.
The monster-catching is a lot less arduous and compulsory than it is in Pokemon. The most enjoyable way to play the game -- especially the easier, more forgiving remake -- is simply working with whatever monsters (randomly) join you instead of trying to Catch 'Em All.
DQV is basically the shit. I'll be the first to admit that DQIV didn't hold up well when it was re-released for DS last year, but DQV is timeless.
Dairy Queen Dilly bars are timeless too!
Well I picked up Dragon Quest V and am seriously enjoying this a lot. It's been forever since I've sat down and dug into an RPG like this.
I hope I can finish it with the limited amount of gametime I have to at least be ready for the next one by summer I guess.
For whatever reason reading about The Dark Spire had gotten me in the mood for an old school rpg, but when I went to go pick up a DSi naturally they didn't have it, so I wound up going home with Dragon Quest IV.
The interminable DQ VII had come close to putting me off this series forever, and I got really sick of the construction-set engine halfway through that game. But the small DS screen is really flattering to it, it really feels at home here. Doesn't hurt that there seem to be more sprites and visual elements in general.
The game itself is a blast, I'd only played the NES version briefly but never got into it - frankly, this version is way more fun. Not having to bring up a menu to talk, smashing pots and enemies that actually animate are far more entertaining than the NES mechanics. I'm also a fan of the more imaginative translation.
I got it yesterday, and I'm about halfway through Torneko's chapter. I had the day off yesterday and must have wasted 8 straight hours plowing through this thing. Which surprises me, because VII felt like such a slog.
There's a lot of the requisite griping in this thread about this being on a handheld, but personally, this is one series that I think might be more at home here. The bite-size quests, lack of extended cinemas and emphasis on battles become positives on a portable system, and like I said, the smaller screen is really flattering to the well animated sprites and the 3D engine which shuffled along on the PS1. I'll probably check out DQ V when I'm done here.
For anyone who missed SE's annoyingly small first print-run of DQV, Amazon has it back in stock for $39.99.
However, it was pointed out to me that the Euro version is easy to come by and cheaper. I got that one on ebay new for $28 shipped.
Enjoy your crappy case.
And crappy game.
The case is a bit thicker, that's true. Won't blend in perfectly with the rest of your DS games. It will look nice next to your copy of Tingle however.
DARGON QUEST VI IS BEING RELEASED ON VALETINES DAY ON NITENDO ES TAPES BY NITENDO!
n________________n
augh not working!
NINTENDO TOOK IT DOWN TO MAKE ME LOOK LIKE A FOOL AND ALSO POST IT TWICE SO I LOOK MORE FOOLISH!
Great news. I've played through the JP version, and it's an awesome game. Way better than DQIX.
Very nice. As long as you are picking up strays N, why not grab Level 5's Ni no Kuni?
Didn't V come out on Valentine's day, too?
Because Square loves you.
I would love Square more if they had made more than 4 copies of V.
Love is fleeting.
it would be nice if it was remade by level5.
It'd be nice if Fran and Balthier were in it
who and who?
vi had a higher...uh...nostalgia rating. also, maybe it was better 'cause you could keep spells from other classes. maybe i'm thinking of 7, though.
It's better because it's a lot more fun. Also the class system is better, story is better, characters are better, graphics are better, music is better, etc. IX is a good game, but my least favorite of the DS version DQ games. I never played VI before the DS version, so there was no nostalgia at play for me.
I used V as a sleep aid. True story.
I've been toying with the idea of buying the Super Famicom DQ games (they are dirt cheap) and installing translated English roms on the boards. Yes, there are emulators and flash carts that could be used instead, but an actual SFC cart in english would be really cool.
that would be hot. though, i'm pretty thankful to have these remakes on a handheld. i'll play and finish them.
