It's not often that I'd recommend a GameStop preorder, but $5 seems worth it for this guy:

Picked up 6 yesterday. Loving it already and having a hard time putting it down. I went shopping on Ebay for a friend who wanted to get V and I was surprised at how much the price on that one shot up.
I pre-ordered through gamestop.com to get that slime plush and now my pre-order is on backorder. This is the last time I ever per-order something from those assholes.
I wanted to get 5 before 6, but HOLY HELL! Amazon has it for 84 bucks new, and 50 used?
I got it new. It's yours for $80 shipped!
I'm in the middle of the V remake, and it is good! Not $80 good, but good. I actually lucked out and found it at Gamestop for $34.99 (used.) As much as I despise the store, it might be worth heading to their website and looking it up to see if there are any stores in your area that have it.
Hero sent you a PM.
Got VI and am enjoying it so far. It starts out pretty slow.
This is practically a new game to me, since the fan translation had game-breaking glitches.
V is good, but not the big shit that everybody says it is.
SQenix overestimated demand for IV and underestimated demand for V so that's why it's worth so much.
I'm really digging this game a lot. Money I've noticed isn't a major issue like it was in some of the later *previous* titles. I just picked up my 3rd character and now I'm grinding it out a little to make sure I can murder anything tough I might run into later on.
I wish something like this has come out on the SNES years ago. This is a title that should have been here ages ago.
so you could play it 5 - 10 times over before playing chrono trigger or final fantasy for the 15th - 20th time.
Just picked up my 4th character, and I seem to have hit the first required grinding point. In the Underkeep, there are these blue gargoyle enemies that spam Sizzle (or whatever they're calling Firebane these days), hit like a truck, have absurd amounts of defense, and occasionally cast the Ironize spell... fucking dickfuckass annoying pricks. They've wiped me twice so far, and none of my characters have Stopspell (Fizzle? Dazzle? Seriously, FUCK these DQ spell names), so I guess I gotta gain some levels.
You're complaining about spell names in a series that once featured "HURT" and "HURTMORE?"
The tank guy Carver gets a move that hits for double damage and it kicks the hell out of those guys. Just bear in mind that it greatly lowers his defense during that same round.
Yes, I am. I have the DW2-7 schema ingrained in my mind and I'm too old and crotchety to learn this absurd razzle/dazzle gibberish.
I was going on the assumption that Double-Up was one of those "charge up this round, hit 2x next" skills which I think are worthless. I stand corrected!
I was under the impression those charge moves usually wind up doing more than 2x damage. I mean: 2 moves at X attack power will be weaker than 1 move at 2X attack power if the monster has a decent amount of defense. This would explain why Double-Up hurts those blue guys so badly.
I dunno, the only time I used anything like that was DQ8's tension system. Once you get to like, 50+ it's worth it, but wasting turns on 5 and 20 is just that, as you'll do more damage in 2 or 3 turns attacking normally than you would "charging up". Not to mention that most bosses have some kind of bullshit tension-cancelling move (sleep, stun, dispel, etc.).
I took your advice, and holy shit double-up is an awesome, borderline-broken skill. It always happens first action of the round, AND hits metal slimes for 2 in addition to crazy damage it normally does to other monsters. You'd think they'd give it at least some kind of MP cost, but nope, it's free. Only issue I had with the defense penalty was on Marduk... he oneshotted Carver with a Frizzle. By that point I had already done a crapton of damage to him using double-up that I just shrugged and finished the fight with him dead.
Finally unlocked the job system, and here's my plan for my current party: Hero - Ranger, Carver - Gladiator, Milly - Sage, Nezan - Paladin, Ashlynn - Luminary (I think this one was called "Superstar" in DW7).
Pretty much. I'd always loved these RPGs and truthfully I like them a lot more then the current gen stuff that's out now these days.
Yeah I was there also. If you've been smart about it and kept a lot of money, head back to the 1st town and buy that Armor from the 1st shop. Solid fucking defense and magic defense. it'll only cost you 7000 tho lol
I've very recently started playing Dragon Quest IV, basically my first DQ game, and am loving it right now. Hard to put down as I keep wanting to progress further, so far I've played through the first two chapters (what happened to the people of Zamoksva???). Love the visuals and environments of the DS remake, very well done.
I just played through the NES version. Awesome, awesome game, but the DS remake is better.
These are the definitive versions. The PS2 remake of V has wonderful enemy animation but bloodless 3D everything else.
Taloon!
FUCK YEAH!!!
Playing that game for the first time? Playing Taloon's chapter for the first time? Someone is having a very good day.
Does anyone here like pleasure?

I like puff-puff.
I bought these for my (now ex) girlfriend, because she loves Dragon Quest as much as I do.
Now...I kinda wish I got them for me =/
Holy shit, DQIV is expensive on Amazon.
What the fuck is going on there? I got it for like $19
Amazon. That happens a lot.
Man, the way you guys talk about DQIV makes me think of my fuzzy feelings for FFIV.
Someone lemme know if you see it pop up anywhere. I'mm'a play this one.
I don't really think it's that great.
I'll freely admit that nostalgia plays into it for me. Carefree childhood days, etc.
Quick search finds the following, maybe there's some better deals out there:
Fry's has Dragon Quest IV for $17.96 + shipping.
Square Enix's online store has it in stock - currently for $29.99, although it will likely be cheaper with their next store sale.
I have them all on my shelf from a very merry TNL Christmas. Looking good.
That's mean :(
My dog loved me, you monster!
Wait, this explains the random meat in family pictures.
It doesn't explain the random meat in you rectum.
I'll explain the random meat in your... wait that's no good.
Chux is the ultimate utility player. He can pitch and catch.
AS SEEN ON TV
lol
Ha!
Watch out for pissed off hookers!
Well, that's better than pissed on hookers.
This thread is off-topic. We're supposed to be talking about Dragon Quest IV, V, and VI remakes coming to the DS.
Didn't hooked passing happen in Dragon Quest?
Those 8-4 jerks always spoke highly of the DQIV script. Were they high? The first chapter is all Moira McTaggert, Banshee, and Rahne; and now the second chapter has shit like "your extinct mother" and "now I recuperate your wall."
I can't decided if it's laughable, bad, or laughably bad.
I kinda hate the ds translation. It's still a great game.
not according to ARBM!
I love the goofy accents. I don't care what this game originally said in Japan.
They're even better in Dragon Quest Heroes!
It was a great game, but I don't think it's especially fun anymore. The finale fizzles (hehehehrmpijustminithr-). The game gives you the feeling that the first 20 or so hours of vignettes are going to be so worth it when all these guys come together in the end and everything coheres. Then it just kinda doesn't.
I forget why else I didn't like it when I played the DS one at launch. Can't find my Completion Thread post.
I think I'm just gonna get a head start on DQV. If I don't like that one anymore, then I guess I just don't like DQ anymore. Not liking DQIII GBC two months ago was troubling. Made me ask some tough questions of myself.
I understand that it's a part of the old rpg mechanic, but I'm really tired of having to walk around the initial town for an hour fighting shit in order to earn enough experience, money, and gear so that I can go to the next town and repeat the process all over again. I'm trying to get my head into a space where I can enjoy the script but I don't know. The stereotypical Claremontisms really bug the fuck out of me.
I didn't care for V much. Finished it though. VII and VIII are the only two Ive really liked
I find V to be the most replayable. The capture rate for most monsters is pretty low compared to Pokémon, and there are so many of those guys that unless you're grinding to get specific/all monsters, DQV can be an entirely different game from one playthrough to the next.
It also helps that it's relatively short. Especially the DS version. DQVII has high variance with monster skills too, but nobody has ever played that game all the way though even once; its replayability is strictly theoretical at this point.
There are rumors dog$ has done so, but I'm pretty sure he's just a Google bot experiment with a neural-net processor.
I actually never finished the post ending optional stuff in 7. Never fought God, never got a town finalized. I don't think I did the latter at least, I know I didn't do the former. I know I tried having everyone learn every possible monster skill for a while, though. I managed to do that much with 6.
I think I got fed up with how frequently the game crashed while playing it on PS2 with the enhancements.
(I really don't know why I clicked on the thread.)
(I wonder if DQH2 will get a price drop as soon as the first one did. I'm interested to get it but not in any particular hurry at the moment.)
I'm probably going to skip dqh2 and wait for 3 while hoping its everything I imagine it could be. Unless tnlers want to play online.
I'll find my cart of IV. If I can get past god awful Ragnar speak I'll play it through
This is worse...

we know what inspired star trek's Chekov reboot.
Just began Chapter 3, Torneko in Fargoland.
Wasted a whole lot of time in chapter 2's casino so that I could win a sword no one could use. Shoulda checked that first I suppose. :(
scratch that, it's not Fargo. The wife saying Dontcha Know threw me off.
Torneko chapter best chapter
This thread reminded me of these games. Picked up a used DQVI for my 3DS.
Has anyone played the translated PS2 version of DQV? I'm trying to decide whether to play that or the DS version. I would be playing the DS version via the WiiU so I could play on a TV, so I'm wondering if there's gameplay enhancements to make the visual downgrade worthwhile.
IIRC the PS2 DQV doesn't double your EXP and gold per battle like all three DS remakes do; the rates are the same as they are in the original. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you I guess, but I really like not having to grind the hell out of the DS games.
No accents in the PS2 translation, though!
I spent around 80 hours with DQ3.
I beat (still have to do last chapter though) DQ4 in 32.
DS version it is!
