Losing pictures of my family would be a bonus.

Nomi, how many times did you have cards fail on you? I'm hoping that me being the only person handling it will be a bonus to its lifespan.

I don't know why you need a DSLR for high school newspaper pictures... kids these days.

Well, it's a mixed case, since it was not my equipment and yeah, irresponsible idiots handled them. I once came to class to find that the other 512 CF card was dented so badly you could see it, and the card from then on registered as a 128 (worked, haha).

That said, I had at least 10 cases of total card wipeout. One card was irreversible ruined, the others continued to 'work' and die out at random. The other photographers had a few failures, but I did the majority of the work, so I had far more cases of it. Maybe 20ish total over 3 years. One card we threw out since it died a few too many times, the others we just put up with since we didn't have the school funding to go buy more. My publications teacher usually bought new cards with her own money to keep the newspaper and yearbook going.

Of the one I had personally, it failed on me once. Nobody ever touched it outside of me and I kept it cased or in the camera at all times. I can't think of anything I did wrong. We would routinely reformat the cards as suggested by a few professionals the school worked with to wipe lingering data off of them and start fresh. The damn thing just crapped out and deleted 112 pictures once.

Maybe it's CF, maybe it was bad school equipment, maybe it was just a string of bad luck. I would be curious to see if the school switched to SD media as she had talked about my senior year, to find out whether or not it was more reliable. Maybe it's just Nikon dooming up perfectly reliable storage, who knows.

Either way, good luck. Please go buy a backup 512 just in case, keep it in your camera bag. It couldn't hurt and shouldn't cost you much at all these days.

Haha, it was a pretty serious publications program. Adobe CS all the way and pretty skilled design and layout training for some high school brats. We got one Nikon D100 as a gift from a photography studio the school had a senior picture contract with, and the pub teacher noticed how wonderful it was for student photographers. You can see your mistakes with digital; on film you'd shoot an entire important game or dance on bad settings and not know until you got the film developed. Digital is a great confidence booster and learning tool. You can mess with settings and learn as you go to make sure you get some viable shots. Honestly, DSLRs are perfect for high school publications. Easy, instant availability for the layout crew and fantastic for new photographers.

My teacher bought a D70 herself and donated it to the publications department (ie, her department) and the D70s was partially paid for by a grant that was earned through winning a publications contest in NE Ohio. I had four highest-ranking sports photos during my two years entering the contest. :) I like to think that I may have helped the school earn the equipment, but it was mostly from our layout editors making some kick-ass spreads.

I miss that equipment. Shit, that Nikkor 70-200mm lens... Absolutely gorgeous. I've been dying to get my own camera since I graduated but I think I'll settle for a point and shoot, the Canon S2/S3/S5 or something eventually.

We had one at my high school too. It was ridiculous but it made photo assignments incredibly easy for me.

Watched it, and I loved it. B Ri is right when saying it does have a lot of build up, but I loved the slasher/mystery theme that took up a good chunk of the movie. It really makes the end that much better when the shit hits the fan.
