Eh, I did it in high school for newspaper and yearbook. 3 hour concerts, 4 hour talent shows, JV then varisty football back to back, three soccer games in one day... That type of job was commonplace for me. I obviously don't know his situation, but even family outings and holidays can leave you away from the convenience of dumping a lot of just-taken photos onto a computer. I don't want to risk important assignments that can't be made up, or important photo memories, you know? I'd rather swap cards once or twice than risk losing everything on one card. You don't get those chances back.
Also, as a side note, I don't have a lot of personal experience with the Canon Rebel XT(etc) series. I have no idea if they're better or worse when it comes to card read/write errors than the Nikons. Some of our data loss problems were strictly card related, but I swear to god the older D70 used to eat cards that worked fine in the D100 or D70s.
