FFXI Expansion Wings of the Goddess

Ok Let me be honest. I've been playing this off & on since beta '03. A lot has changed for the better then since it started the last thing being able to finally choose whichever server you want to goto.

Anyways I didn't see this anywhere else on the forums in details and a lot of people know I'm a pretty advent player of this game so I decided to see if some minor interest can be sparked once again.

I'm kinda wary that this will be supported on the PS2 as well. Gotta love those crazy Japanese. :wtf:

Oh yeah and for PC users SE finally got a clue that PC users like Windows and thus with this release a Window'd version of FFXI will be out that will of course allow you to use your PC the way it was meant to be instead of having to download 3rd party software to get the job done. I'l try and post some more information later when time permits.

I gave this game a shot a long time ago. It took them way to long to figure out how to make an MMO to even be worth time.

If they ever try a new one I may give it a shot but FFXI is dead to me. I haven't actually met anyone in real life who plays it anymore either, which generally doesn't bode well for an MMO's life.

i stopped playing once they nerfed the rangers, around the time promathia came out. End game Red Mage was boring because you were refresh whore, and somtimes they wanted you to replace the white mage, and ranger no longer gave the damage to justify the cost.

I love FFXI for its class system (change class anytime in town with a sub class for minor boosts) and its brutally punishing partying. Small mistakes = death = win. Least for me, mostly because i delight in the suffering of anonymous online people.

I really wanted to enjoy the game because of the class change system and a few other things. But fuck was it boring lol.

The illusion would be more truthful if those great screenshots of futurescapes were populated with human players being killed by oversized rats and spiders or other PC combatants that are equally as ridiculous. I liked Star Wars Galaxies before I realized how much of a grind it was, but even that game had those issues (more creative issues than technical).

I would have made this thread when it was announced but I figured it would get lol'd so much the server would crash.

It's a good game but fundamentally flawed.

The sad thing is combat in the game is actually REALLY good in a party sense, the story lines very good for an mmo, excellent musicial score, the small touches are there but the pace of the game is so fucking slow it kills it

Actually you'll be pleased to know that SE un-nerfed it. You can actually do DD RNG again with a Kraken Club or a Ridill or whatever you choose to do.

Marskitten, That's another thing SE did with the recent advent of ToAU. Merit Parties I've been in have broken EXP chains upwards of Chain #250 easy. Even a normal PT setup or something with a mess of DDs or Mage job PTs can pretty much clean up in exp.

Actually if you still have your CD Key and Info, SE could probably restore the character. They offer a one time restoral of deleted characters from the game per account.

They Nerfed black mages damnit. I hate ToAU for that.
I switched to Samurai and im having fun with it.
Hopefully Wings of the Goddess un nerf us blackmages a bit.
I spent 2 days looking for a party as blm once. no more.

I dunno. I had to recently re-install FFXI onto my new PC and it only took about an hour and a half tops after I was done installing everything. My Discs tho are from the '03 Decemeber release so I'm sure that it wouldn't take as long for you.

I don't think BLM was nerfed that hard. They just made it to where only HNMs would build some resistance over time vs magic seeing as SE didn't want players to manaburn everything to death to win battles.

Unless there is another nerf I'm unaware of then I'm not sure what you're talking about.

what server were you? iwas midgarsormr, and i was in the pheonixdown linkshell, then i created my own, then i came back and they were a big NM group. I dunno if i could go back, your making me debate it and me and FFXI coupled with school = not healthy haha.

i just checked and it says anything past 3 months may not be able to be recovered. I also think i may have restored my character once already.

I'm on Fairy *Wasn't my 1st choice*. Still play off and on and do a lot of events with my Linkshell. Mainly working on Limbus and trying to finish my THF's build for Homam while at the same time living in Dragon's Aery trying to get my last Abjuration.

It wasn't a nerf so much as Most of the mobs in ToAU areas have high magic defense. add to that colibri's which are used to lvl 65+ have auto reflect. I've been lolblm at while lfp in Whitegate. I could maybe get a main healing pt position but with white mages,summoners,redmages coming before me...well like i said, 2days lfp and nothing.

Yeah I can actually relate to that issue. Honestly I prefer exping in the Rise of Zilart zones over ToAU even if the exp is a little slower.

My favorite places at the time were The Boyada Tree off Processinares and Tormentors in the Den of Rancor when I was leveling DRK. Having a BLM in PTs like that is just something I always enjoyed as much asthey liked busting out Magic Bursts of near 1 to 1.5k in damage.

Well if you reconsider maybe coming back to it, you could always come to my server. Fairy's a lot more...willing to go exp in zones outside of ToAU. I'm currently camping this guy...

If the above mentioned $20 is too much for you (which I just bought because it's the same price as ToAU by itself and now I have everything on one DVD) and you have a shitton of free download time, I've got a couple friend codes which are free 30-day tickets. They'll also soon be releasing a DVD demo version in stores similar to the WoW one for about $5, so you could also grab that whenever it's available.

It's a little daunting at first because for the job you want you also need a good subjob for it, and leveling that to its proper place will also take its own subjob. Right now I'm getting my subsubjob to 18 (MNK) so that I can finish getting my WAR subjob to his proper level so that I can also unlock the job I want as my main (PUP).

My question being though, are the original jobs still worth a damn or are they just there so you can get the advanced jobs :/

Most all of the jobs in the game are viable to some extent. MNK is great because of the huge amount of damage it can do, to the point where I see MNKs talking about how they have to limit themselves in certain instances so as to not pull the hate. WAR are tanks and good dps, WHM are a constant source of awesome invaluableness, THF is an evasion tank with the powerful SATA (combination Sneak Attack/Trick Attack), and RDM are loved by all mana users thanks to refresh (they're the pre-BC Pally, really). If the people with more time under their belt want to correct me on anything please do so, most of this is from reading way too much after starting an RDM and realizing I ended up back in my WoW class (what I thought RDM would be is what BLU is).

I'm going PUP because they're like a MNK but they can also work better as soloing, and since the damage is divided between two (a Puppetmaster and his automaton) they can deal huge amounts of damage and never draw hate in a party. Plus I like the idea of having an automated, customizable follower.

As long as a monk still has it's high value I'm happy :).

My other concern is I know this game is pretty fucking heavy on requiring groups once you get past like level 10. So how terrible is it to find groups of people to hang out with and level up with :/

It's random. Some days it's terrible finding a group and other times I get one as soon as I log in, but on the bright side every time I've gotten one they've lasted for hours. After 9pm seems to be the best time no matter what day of the week it is, but as you go up in level and get in with a linkshell that seems to get easier.

p.s. I love the auto-translator, as I've ended up in otherwise 100% Japanese groups.

Hah that's cool. Well I'll have it for free so I can at least give it a shot. Probably read up on the classes etc since I played it before there were any expansions.

Are there new races and shit too? or is still just those 4.

Fairy is pretty solid. There arn't even any real costly pieces of gear anyone outside of a haub whih is close to a mil and a SH is down to around 500k now? Crafting is somewhat profitable now and it's easy to make gil in a lot of places with ENMs and BCNMs being the desired way to rake in the cash.

I was a Fang Farmer in Beaucidine Glaicer when I 1st farmed for my Dark Staff but since then I hadn't had any real money issues since then.

Case in point my THF looking like this in only 2 months after it hit 75.

But overall Fairy really has a solid thing going for it but it was a lot worse before it became what it is now.

Honestly it's not so bad. Getting a PT in Valkrum Dunes really isn't a problem and most people will Powerlevel you anyways thru most of your life in that place. If you do choose to come to Fairy, Send me a /tell and I'll see that your advancement thru the dunes is as painless as possible. MNK tho is something that I personally wouldn't try to live off of just yet.

I'd level it as a sub but MNKs sometimes have a hard time getting PTs later on and a lot of gear to make your MNK really wesome involves a lot of Questing. Items such as Purple Belt which you need to get a pair of Horns from two Notorious Monster Rams one being in La Thiene and the other in Konstach Highlands can be somewhat daunting if you're a low level player.

Brown Belt also is a fun venture seeing as you need 3 items two of which are from 2 Notorious Monsters that pop every two hours which isn't bad but the 3rd item for tha belt is a NM that is a 21-24 hour pop in a deep cavern in La Thiene which is semi-camped.

If you really want to be a hard hitting DD at the start of the game and enjoy quick and easy EXP time, starting with WAR 1st is my advice. Level MNK of course to 20 seeing as it will be a very damn good sub then level WAR as a main to level 30 and then decide where your true path on your main job goes from there.

There is so much advice I can give you but it would fill out a shit ton of space on this thread alone so I'm keeping it short n sweet for now. Feel free to ask my anymore questions tho...

Farming isn't as bad as all that. You mainly just need to know what makes money and how to do it. I can help a little with your SAM if you eventually show up to Fairy but mainly it's just knowing where to go to make a decent amount of gil in a short time. Eventually you're gonna have to work on CoP somewhat as well seeing as I know you'll want this thing...

Just the four. I'd imagine because they have such a focus on using one character with all the jobs, adding a new playable race would cause all kinds of havok in the player base. The last three jobs that were added (BLU, PUP, and COR) were described by Square as being the leftover pieces that were removed from the other classes during their development, so that makes me wonder about the upcoming jobs in WotG. Granted, they still haven't added relic armor for those classes and they've been around for over a year so I'm wondering about that as well.

OMG. a SH is only 500k on fairy. Your still lookin at 15mil for a SH on Asura. its insane. Hauby's are still in the 3-6mills.
Its gotten better since they started kicking the Gil Sellers. I remember when a stack of Beehive Chips were 15k gil.

i really miss blowing shit up with my Taru Black Mage. Ive grown to love Scing with my Avatars as Summoner but noone wants a summoner to actually summon. all they want is main heal. Its annoying really.

I'm still on Promy-Dem and i cant get anyone in my linkshell to do it. I really dont like doing things like BCNM's and Promy's with people i dont know. That sword is about as smexy as it gets.

How do i switch servers anyway? i thought once on a server your stuck.

As far as Promys goes people are doing runs all the time in shouts so it's not uncommon to get one going. If time permits I can help on it as well. I'm currently focusing on BST a this moment in Jugner Forest *Fucking Tigers* but other then that not much atm.

Thief Silver made it online to Fairy last night and I guess he had fun seeing as he lost track of the time and went from level 1 to almost 7 in one sitting. lol

BonusKun has some nice gear, must be in a decent end game linkshell :) I really don't have the time for most of that, though I do some end game stuff with smaller groups as time allows me :lol:

It's alright, but once I didn't have someone healing me between every fight (this morning) it got kinda of irritating just because heal is so slow, and the XP distribution is so wierd. Here's an enemy you can kill in one hit. 35 xp, here's an enemy you can kill in 2 minutes. 50 xp.

More or less it's what each mob cons to you. You need to check how hard the mob is that you fight.

There are different %s of exp gain depending on how tough something is to kill.

Case in point something can be Decent Challange and give 72 exp however if something says Decent Challange with High Evasion and Defense then it can give up to 100 exp.

A not-very-subtle push towards grouping up. Aside from the obvious no more waiting you can plow through enemies that will give you more xp and you can start xp chains (the quicker you can kill them and move on to the next, the better) which gives you more xp than normal.

When soloing I usually stick to easy prey because I can kill lots of them with no downtime, which makes up for tougher stuff that gives more xp per kill. But it's still no substitute for a good group taking down tough and incredibly tough in a constant stream.
