Boston, I'm coming to violate you.

So this coming weekend, my significant other and I will be going to Boston because we don't have anything to do. Thankfully, I have an aunt and she has a cousin that will allow us to stay up there for free. We'll most likely be driving up there since it seems cheaper to drive than to take Amtrak or a plane.

My question is, TNLers that live or have visited this fine city, what the hell is there to do? Bars are out of the question since if I wanted to drink I'd just tell the woman we should go to NYC for a bar. Give me some restaurants, landmarks, titty clubs, tourist traps or anything else you can think up.

In short: Please help me plan my trip to Boston.

well i've been there 3 times myself. the touristy thing to do is to go to the Quincy Market area. there's a huge aquarium there and tons of "old school colonial shit" to walk around and see.

i had some pretty good food in the Italian section. like most big cities try to skip the actual chain restaraunts and look for the family run bottom of the house type of places. i stuck to that and was never disappointed. there is also a fish place (can't remember the name) where they have a shellfish shucking bar right when you walk in and an upstairs floor. you can't miss it. it's got a huge sign and it a complete tourist trap. it's also pretty fucking expensive (at least i thought so) and wasn't worth it IF you want an affordable meal.

I grew up in Boston, there is nothing to do there so you might as well stay here in NY/NJ area.

What kind of budget are you on, and what kind of food do you like?

Being that I've been living here on a college student budget, I can't say I've done and seen all there is here, but there's definitely some decent stuff to do. Let me know and I'll make some more focused recommendations.

Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market is good times, weather permitting. One of my personal favorite places to eat is The Pour House. The burgers are fucking amazing. It's relatively cheap, too.

Drive out to the cape, its really nice out there, it will be a bit crowded though, as its peak touristy season.

We put city names into a hat and came out with Boston, so now it's set in stone. But we're also going camping sometime near September and are looking to rent a cabin for the weekend. PM me more info by then.

Go to the Union Oyster House. It has awesome sea food and it's the oldest operating restaurant in the USA. It is a little pricey, around $20-$25 a plate for dinner, but for what you get I thought it was actually a deal. It's the oldest restaurant in the USA. Even if you don't feel like ponying up for dinner you can get a beer and some chowder and it'd be worth the visit.

i think that was the place i said to stay away from. i was not impressed. then again i dont eat seafood and they had a whopping TWO non fish plates. one was a $38 fillet :(

Best chowder I ever had was on Martha's Vineyard. Christ it was so good. I went back there 6 times to eat it.

Also, Boston is boring. Go see a concert at the Middle East and go the the MFA (Museum of Fine Arts). They had an awesome exhibit on Art Deco that is gone now.

The Aquarium is neat too, if you like that kind of thing. I personally love aquariums, marine life is fuckin' crazy. My favourite aquarium in the nation is the Shedd in Chicago, but Boston's has some neat stuff, including lots of penguins. There's an IMAX theater there that shows nature-y films.

The coolest thing about Boston are the City Toilets. It's like a quarter and you enter a space-pod toilet area that self cleans itself with ridiculous sprays, complete with sliding doors and shit. Be sure to take a piss in one.

More boring stuff: Duck Tours, and lots of other historical shit. The food in Boston was underwhelming since you know, I eat out in NYC all the time, and we have the best food in the country, EXCEPT for Mexican food.

Oh and DO NOT DRIVE IN BOSTON.

Probably because I said boston was boring and then posted a ton of shit to do. It's not really that interesting though. If I wasn't fucking someone in Boston I wouldn't have gone up there so much.

OH! If you want to take a drive go take a tour of the Wachusett Brewing Company. Their Blueberry is the best fruit-flavored beer ever, and if you like Blue Moon at all, you need to try it. Also their Nut Brown Ale is fucking GREAT. I've been able to find some of their Blueberry down here recently, but it's really hard to find. You don't need to go to the brewery to check it out, so be sure you do that. You can find it around Boston.

Razor lives in Jersey anyway, and going to Jersey shore beaches is 10x the experience of driving 5+ hours to Cape Cod with the shittiest beaches in all of USA.

No, I love Monmouth county for the most part, and it is really nice. We are thinking of moving there actually. The real problem with NJ is the property tax, they have the HIGHEST median tax rate in the USA. Crazy.

I remember that I was driving with my friend from Jersey to see another friend in PA. When we were driving down I fell asleep and I woke up when we were driving and I saw a beautifull parkway surrounded by trees and a blue sunny sky. I asked if we were in PA yet. He told me that this is part of the state that they hide from New Yorkers so they dont move down.

if he was driving to PA it was likely the turnpike, which is really the shittiest road in Jersey, but since it goes to Philly it's the one everyone travels on.

if you're hungry for some fried squid, you can always check out asian garden at chinatown. I find the prices there affordable. Other than that, if u wanna do some sight seeing there's always the duck tour; where they drive you around boston or you can do the freedom trail walk.

Oh, they have a holocaust memorial that you should definitely see.

The Holocaust Memorial is a two minute, walk through type deal, nothing too special. Thats right by Fanueil Hall at least so you don't need to actually go out of your way to get to it.

No, I wish I live in Monmouth county. We are looking at houses in Middletown now. It seems to have the best combination of price/low RE tax/convenient commute to Manhattan. We haven't found the dream home yet.

Back on topic, Razor, go check out Newbury Street. It has alot of nice cafe and EXPENSIVE shops for you to window shop. I love that area (used to work there in the Prudential buildings, where that mall is). You can go to the Top Of the Hub restaurant there, not too expensive for lunch, then walk on Newbury st. toward Boston Common. Then you would have seen the best of Boston in 1/2 day. :)

You can also check out boston beer works; they brew Samuel Adams. You like chowder? If you do, there's this one place close to govt center famous for its chowder. Can't remember the name, but its the restaurant where JFK always went to when he was a senator in mass.

Isn't there also the Cheers exterior bar and the Cheers interior bar in Boston that people go to see?

Seconding this idea. Newbury St's pretty great. My budget food recommendation there would be Steve's Greek, on the corner of Newbury and Hereford. Amazing stuff. Occasionally hot waitresses. Sometimes hideous ones.

The Pru and Copley Place are okay, not much special there, but they're nice to walk through. The Common and Gardens are an absolute must if it's a nice day.

Faneuil Hall is surrounded by touristy shit, but there area is plenty nice to look at. Plus they have a Beard Papa. The aboveground Cheers is down there. Avoid both of them.

The whole Harvard Square area is pretty nice. I used to hang out there a lot earlier in school, but I don't have quite as much money to burn through now. There's a great boba place there called Boston T Stop with a SF2CE machine. My roommate and I used to go there a ton. Also a killer Thai restaurant called 9 Tastes, to just scratch the surface.

The Union Oyster House, the Pour House, The Publick House, Sunset Grill & Tap are all good ideas if you want to grab some food and some damn good beers. If you're looking for a great burger, check out Bartley's in Cambridge. If you're looking for burgers over a pound that will make you shit blood, check out Eagle's Deli at the end of the C line.

Chinatown's worth a visit, as is the North End. There's a bunch of good bakeries in Chinatown, and one of my favorite restaurants, New Saigon Sandwich. If you've never had banh mi before, it might be worth a shot, $2.50 for a sandwich and you can't go wrong. They're on Washington St. Used to be a straight shot through Stripper Alley (LaGrange St, really) from where I lived.

There used to be two strip clubs there on opposite sides of the street, The Glass Slipper and Centerfolds. Since they've been ripping up the edges of Chinatown to put in giant condos for rich white people, one side of the street had to go. The Glass Slipper and Centerfolds are now on the same side of the street.

If you're in the area, the 7/11 on the corner of of Stuart and Tremont is like a warzone. I've seen the guys at the register screaming at people for trying to sell crack in it, guys from clubs fighting each other, and hobos accidently lighting sandwiches on fire in the microwave. It's a good time. Sorta.

I never did the Duck Tour thing when I moved here, but I've always wanted to, kind of. The vehicles are cool, but I'm always annoyed when they drive by. I want to be that annoying guy.

The New England Aquarium isn't all that great, but it's a decent diversion, I guess. I used to go more often. The Museum of Science is even more expensive, but they occasionally have awesome rotating exhibits. The LotR one a few years ago was amazing.

If I could live in any city in the world, I would live in Cambridge.

Be sure to hit up Dorchester for the late night fun. It's just outside the city and you're guaranteed to have a good time.

Or if you don't feel like getting shot, you could do the Freedom Trail which is pretty much a walk through the city. You could hit up Boston Common and check out Paul Revere's house or the grave of Sam Adams (just like the beer) while you're walking.

The city really isn't that big. If you're looking for some International food, hit up the Somerville area for some good Brazilian food.

When I was in bean town I went to Jacob Wirth's Restaurant, had some chowder... only did it for the t shirt cause I have the same last name, but that shit was gooooood. Also the pier is pretty cool with the old boats and shit. We also did the Aquarium thing and hit up the IMAX.

Got back from Boston last night. Wasn't there for too long but it was a great trip. Got to walk around everywhere, visit the aquarium, go to boutiques and shops and some really good restaurants.

The ride through I-95 sucked dick, though.

I-95, the Connecticut stretch Exit 1-50 is horrible.

I believe you. I just hate Connecticut. The RI, MA stretch isn't bad sh!t even NY flies by in the at blinlk of an eye but Connecticut forget about it.


I think I can pin point the day I realized I hated that stretch of road was when I was with my pops traveling from the Bronx to Boston one hot ass summer day. I must of been like 10-11 and we were stuck in traffic for what seemed like hours in New London or just before that and there was no accident no construction nothing it just jammed for some unknown reason plus the highway patrol they suck.
