Cute Grim Reaper Adventures

Lately I've been infatuated with drawing this little cute grim reaper character.

This morning while doodling a bit to warm up I came up with this:

And I thought, wow, this would make a neat little game, which led me to mock up the image above with a little bit of "in game" interface thrown on:

After seeing the above image I didn't really want to stop, and since I had been wasting time on it already, why not go ahead and do it up right:

I'm thinking it would be an actiony platformer with a silly sense of humor (something like Bangioh's writing maybe?) and lots of boss encounters.

Or maybe something metroidvania-ish... I dunno, was just tossing some ideas around in my head and debating if I want to really try to work on this or not.

What do you cats think? Something you'd play, does it have potential?

I thought it would be a fun topic either way.

I would certainly play a game with those awesome graphics :P.

Srsly though I'd like to see that character as the main character in a game.

Seriously though... enough Metroidvanias... definitely go the action-platformer route... maybe some Prince of Persian/Flashback style puzzles.

I really like the style. Any type of platformer would work or even a point and click adventure.

I love the look, and I'd love it in your initial action platformer idea above all else. Might be because I'm burnt out on Metroidvania, though.

He should use his scythe to dig into walls for a wall jump, and hook onto things for swinging around. I'm sure you could find tutorials on how to put together a platformer in XNA.

If it was like Metroid, not "Metroidvania" (i.e., good, interesting level design with lots of secrets, and no leveling up - increases in strength come solely as a reward for exploration), that'd be great.

well, you'd think I'd be able to make something by now.

You could make a text adventure game. If you can't do that then you should probably give up.

Try to make pong. You probably should be able to if you learned anything from the book. Then after you finish making pong, change the ball into an array of balls, and make them shoot out of one of the paddles when you hit the space bar. Then make the other paddle disappear if a ball connects with it. With that you have the foundations of a basic shooter.

There are a lot of things you should be able to make right now, you just have to put the time in. =|

C++ on its own offers no help in making a game. You need to hook into graphics, sound and input libraries (like OpenGL or DirectX). Ideally you'd just use a game engine and not muck with the low level stuff. Even a text adventure can't be done in the way you'd imagine with pure C++ (you'd need a curses library for that)

If you really want to make a game with C++, look into something like SDL

But if you're just messing around and want to make games for the hell of it, forget C++. Go with something like Python and pygame, you'll get a game up and running much quicker. Heh, just noticed pygame's slogan is "Takes the 'C++' out of 'game development'" :)

I've always wanted to try making a game with Game Maker.

The thought of doing all the art/animation and learning to program the beast is almost too daunting for me to get my head around, especially when I consider I could be using that money to, you know, pay bills. heh.

IMO, if you really want to make games get a buddy. One guy does development, the other does art. Both tasks are enormous and so different it's rare to find one person good at both.

I've only made games here and there because I never really did find a good artist to work with. I now met an awesome artist, and I'm moving in a week. But we still might whip something together.

Looks sweet...and I second the tshirt idea.

Game Maker is awesome, as I've said before. I've seen impressive games made solely with the logic GUI (lord knows how the developer could stand using it for something so complex, but whatever), but it's a really flexible and convenient engine if you learn the scripting language. Which is really easy if you've ever messed with C++.

oh and as for the actual thread topic...i really dig that art a lot. I'd totally play that if it was a game. Ironically you could even make it a good looking OG gameboy game.

I've heard great things, but I wish I could mess with it to see how it works without dropping the money.

edit: whoa, I guess you can do that for $30 now. nice.

Love the art style and would love to see an action platformer out of this.

This absolutely must have music in the form of 16-bit tunes. It demands some stirring boss themes in the like of Mario and Megaman, with some haunting GnG to mix in.

This looks great. Seriously. If you made a game out of this, I would <3 you forever.
