What's the problem?
BTW, this program apparently fixes the private game connection issues WITHOUT opening firewall ports: http://www.gameranger.com/
PC games are mostly fine these days. It's rare that I have to fuck around with configuration files and I can't even remember the last time I had a game that simply refused to launch. Gearbox just sucks.
I had major issues with Borderlands. I still have texture flickering going on. When somebody wants to play a game they look at the value of it all. Having to install nVidia drivers, get a Steam account, and get a Gamespy account is a 3 step process compared to Insert Disc in Tray (a 1 step process). PC gaming has a lot of restructuring to do before it becomes viable as a platform on the level consoles are right now.
That said Steam is a godsend. I love the service. That said I did have issues with L4D2. It would download and decode like 3 or 4 times for no reason. So that's f'n gay. But at every turn in PC gaming there are hiccups and user experience glitches that really hamper the entire thing.
The game wouldn't launch. I was running from a pre-order preload. I finally got it to launch after restarting my machine and update Steam, so all seems to be well.
I'm impressed that I can run this at a super-high resolution on my 2.5 year old computer (never upgraded since) and it looks great.
Also got it on PC, but I start too late (West Coast time) for most of you to play. A bunch of my classmates got it, so going co-op is no problem, but if you see Cowdisease on Steam, I might be willing to play a Borderland session with you.
I bought it on PC and it's having issues with my nVidia graphics card for absolutely no reason. Also the new L4D2 demo I just played keeps downsizing my window at random times for absolutely no reason. Ended up fucking a round up for me. People will pay 10 bucks more for Xbox games because they understand the value of that. Most people wont search for new drivers. They'll take the game back and swap it because they want to play a game, not learn about computer science.
I understand my PC is older and needs to be upgraded, but they don't. So Xbox wins for the majority and that's why. If people on PC got together on Steam and worked at a solitary experience they could probably get some of the market back. Most people have a laptop or desktop. And, like you said, the games are cheaper.
I don't even know what you're getting at. Computer science? If anything, PC games are far easier to play now than they were even a few years ago.
I had to set up a 386 + sound card + expanded/extended memory manager when I was THIRTEEN (with no internet to tell me what I was doing wrong). And now you don't even need to know what an IRQ is, let alone fuck around with them in a half-dozen config files.
Downloading an updated video driver every ~month (if Windows Update didn't already do it automatically) is wonderful compared to that bullshit. And you probably don't even need a CS degree!
I'm at 21 right now. The Leader mods on Soldiers are pretty awesome. So far I've leveled along the Medic route, so I'm a mean healer/reviver with the turret. Shooting friends in the face to heal them is strangely satisfying.
