This game sounds wicked. Definitely going to keep an eye on it.
I'm intrigued.
I like Gearbox.
Gearbox is cool these days. And I like that picture. :tu:
Nice to see Gearbox doing something that isn't a WW2 FPS. I'll be keeping an eye on this.
2k games picked it up btw. (not sure if that was in the original link).

I wasn't expecting that change but I approve, based on that pic anyway.
I don't love it, but I admit they're better off with a more distinctive style, especially given the thematic overlap with Rage.
I still don't know how this game is supposed to work. It had looked like a Halo clone up until this point, so I'm assuming that gameplay is still intact... but the mention of RPG elements leaves me hopeful that this will be like an extension of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
The characters remind me of Rock Bands' style.
Or lack thereof.
I like the look and art style of RB a lot more than Guitar Hero.
I don't agree. GH is stuck with what Harmonix started and RB has cleaned up since. Presentation is a lot more pleasing in RB, character, art, menu and stage design.
Hey, this comes out soon!
Yeah, I'm hyped for it. d1 coop 4u2c?
I'm getting it tonight, faggot. :)
oh well fuck you mr. jump-the-gunderson
I WILL HAVE MORE LEVALS THAN YOU AND BETTER GUNS. 65k SKRUNDLES PER POLYGON
I haven't looked into this game much but I did listen to the latest episode of Idle Thumbs and they had very bad things to say about it.
Shit. I was going to buy it. Looks like I'll just relegate it to the gamefly list.
Why form your own opinions when you can kinda hear about someone else possibly making them for you?
Why listen to what other people have to say about a game when you can spend $60 to find out if you like it?
Anyway it's one person's opinion. I'm sure you're all grown up enough to take that as you will. I'm not completely writing the game off yet but there were some big problems he talked about that go beyond personal taste.
I saw a stream last night of this game. It went from a "seriously consider buying at launch" to "wait for reviews and buy on budget later." To me, Borderlands looked really really dull. The quests seemed to be typical MMO grindfest stuff, the open world seems to serve no real purpose, and the loot system seemed poorly designed. Clicking on each individual item to pick it up works in Diablo because all the loot is clustered together in one spot on the screen. That is not the case when you have to walk over and look at each item in an FPS.
Well shit, I was hoping it would turn out well. Guess I'll wait.
While I think that's a very silly approach, I wasn't being serious with my previous comment. Comments and videos of Borderlands have come off as very mixed so far, so there's nothing wrong with taking a bit of caution.
I personally don't care about playing 'really good' games, only interesting ones, which isn't always the same thing.
Sure. I own Katamari. <shrug> That got near unanimously positive reviews too.
I don't buy games based on reviews, but recently I don't buy many games at all because most of them are shit. Renting is enough.
I bought Okami because it was a Zelda style adventureish game with pretty art. Seemed right up my alley. Fuck that game.
But I'd rather play an experiment that only partly succeeds than a polished rehash of a polished rehash of the same shit I played last year.
I'd put them at even. Most games coming out these days are shitty rehashes, and this sounds like no exception, except it's a shitty rehash of a genre that hasn't really appeared in a while married to an FPS.
Mirror's Edge was fun.
Yes, but I think this depends on whether you enjoy the genre already. Diablo games do absolutely nothing for me, so I have no interest in the main hook of Borderlands, and the FPS elements seem too basic to be interesting. I'll stick to Stalker for my FPS/RPG hybrid action.
Seriously if we drop all the bullshit going on in this thread, this game had a promising concept, but RIGHT NOW what does it look like to you?
I bet this is more disappointing than Hellgate was.
What? Did you actually play Hellgate? That game was awful in every possible way, ugly as shit, terrible controls, lame loot, and they dared to tack a monthly fee on it. Borderlands could be pure shit and it'll still beat Hellgate.
I watched some streams though that made it look fun and challenging, so we'll see. I'll be playing it mainly in co-op, and be happy if it's not the same old shit like Halo has been four times over now. At least it's not straight up corridor shooting.
Hellgate might have been the worst game TNL co-op has conned me into getting.
Worse than Ramon w/ Bomberman.
The art in both is well produced and fun. It's kitschy and over-the-top but that was the defined style and they ran with it very very well. What are you even talking about - the menus or the in-game stage footage of your avatar singing? If the latter then, yeah, that needs to be spiced up IMO. But the actual menus and style are great.
I personally like firm poo better. A tint of deep/forest green to go along with the brown just brings back warm memories of Vermont's visage.
So despite what someone who knows someone might have said on a messageboard, Borderlands is getting great reviews.
Sorry, that's not a B+ game. Fuck essentially multiplayer-only games.Quote:

Until I had to group all the time to continue to progress. I love the shit out of soloing MMOs.
Plus, MMOs don't have the same issue as these kinds of games where no one will be playing it in three months.
Fair enough.
Mine shipped from Gamefly today. Will play with you soon.
I like shoot mans games.
I like loot mans games. (Diablo)
I like class mans games.
I like co-op friends games.
I should like Borderlands.
That's what I'm thinking but even the reviews that praise it are saying the single player is a drag. That its the "Mario Party of FPS" as 1up puts it - the inherent enjoyment stems from having a team, not from the core mechanics. That the basic, AI, the open, dull world to trudge through becomes more noticable on solo.
So fuck it I ended up picking this up. 2NITE IS ALL RIGHT FOR CO-OP.
Bacon, PC or ZBOZ?
ZBOZ3000
I don't think the PC version's due out for another week.
IWILLCU2NITE
I'm seriously contemplating buying this over Steam. It looks very good.
Does WoW have random encounters and angsty feminine lead characters?
It has random encounter placement and feminine emo users. Does that count?
WoW has lots of random encounters with angsty fake feminie characters.
EDIT: Frog beat me to it!
I'd consider getting in on that 4pack if people want to get this for pc. I need something to play on my computer when my girlfriend hogs the 360 watching House.
Rented this today. Send an invite if you see me online.
It's funny you mention this. In a conversation with my game professor who also works at Microsoft and is really knowledgeable about MMOs, he told me something very surprising about MMOs. Despite having "massive multiplayer" in the genre's title, the most successful MMOs are the ones that have strong single-player content. You would think that people who play MMOs do so because they want to play in a massive group, right? Nope. Most play the game either by themselves or with another person, and one of the reasons some MMOs aren't as popular as WoW is because the games were designed to make it impossible to reach the level cap by yourself. That's partially why WoW has been so successful. You could reach the level cap if you played solo. Granted, there is some content that you can't access without playing with a group, but you don't get penalized if you don't play in raids.
I kinda get it, though. I mean, when I play these games, I do want to party up with people, but I also see the flip-side. It's kinda neat just to know that there are other people running around the world/server... that there are these hubs you can go back to in order to talk, show off your gear, buy/sell/trade items with, etc. Even if you don't necessarily want to go through the effort of finding reliable groups of players to quest with all the time.
If I have the option to team up or play solo I'll enjoy a bit of both, but if the game is balanced so that I can't do shit by myself (endgame/special content excluded) then I'll probably get burnt out pretty quickly.
How do we do that? I already bought L4D2 and split it with spent and our friends (to get the baseball bat, primarily). Steam is wicked. I'd give spent Borderlands so he can play it, too. Something tells me this isn't the kind of game you want to play solo if you can avoid it.
Played a marathon session of coop with Chux, this game is rad. Enemies get kinda retardedly buffed as your levels progress, though.
Yeah, I didn't realize we played for like 5 hours. Sucks that H's game was fucking up on him though.
Spent four hours playing the game without even realizing the time. Now only 5 hours of sleep before work. :\
Lillith's phasewalk attack is broken out of the box. Awesome, I now have a char. with an oh shit button, not a go invisible and fuck bitches up button.
How so? Moves too fast to hit anyone accurately, I'm guessing?
There's a few skills that could offset that a little, one where the shockwave when you initiate phasewalk will hurt enemies, and another where running nearby 'em causes shock damage.
No, it literally is not doing damage when you melee them out of phase walk.
Edit: It's a known issue and gearbox is working on it.
This is a cool game -- Crackdown + Fallout 3 + Stranger's Wrath. I only managed to play a bit of co-op, which was great. 1P was fun enough, but I'm really hoping some of you will be on tonight for more co-op.
Btw, I went with Mordecai -- snipers and revolvers, mmmm. Plus, I like having a deadly attack bird perched on my shoulder.
I started the game this morning and played till I was a level 12 solo. Its a lot of fun so far. I need to try the co-op. Maybe tonight.
I'm going to be grinding on this for a couple weeks doing a guide, but after that, I'd likely be down for that. Unless I really fall in love with this.
Man you guys suck now I want it again. But I really shouldn't buy it so I WON'T
This is one of those games that'll suck if I pick it up late though.
I am pretty rad.
No really though we started tearing through shit and we both got some nice upgrades.
fuck blockbuster
I'm sure there are other places to get it from.
fuck anyplace. I'll play it when Gamefly sends it to me in three months.
I dunno, if they keep adding classes I'll keep playing. The game is dumb fun playing co-op with friends.
Once I 100% Brutal Legend, I will probably trade that in and try to get a used copy of this if I can.
I'm having enough fun with the game that I'll absolutely start up another playthrough with a different class when I'm done with the one I've got. I'll be getting a lot of mileage out of it.
ok I'm gonna go see if I can snag it off a blockbuster later because I got the next two days off
He did. Korly, and Cow joined the game I was playing with firstblood, we killed a few things and turned in a quest and both of them hit level 6. Powerleveling is easy in the joint.
