I test drove both of them before I bought the si. I really love the style of the vw but I just don't trust them. I know a lot of vw owners that feel the same way. The road test was enough for me anyway.
The problem with Car and Driver, and all car reviews really, is that they test every car at it's best possible moment. VWs are really great cars when they're new. The rattles haven't shown up, the engines have nice torque, and the interior is sweet. Two years down the road it's a rattle trap, the dash is peeling, it sounds like a lawnmower, and needs expensive repairs. There's not much they can do about that though. They have to drive it and tell you what they think at that moment.
I test drove a GTI too and I thought it was awesome. I was close to going down that path, but equiped properly they are just to expensive.
They just finished up a 40,000 mile test and still had only glowing things to say about it. But their long term test triggered a lot of mail from readers that own VWs and say they're a pain in the ass. To C/D's credit, they printed them :)
I guess my point is that while Car and Driver clearly has their biases, they're very fair in printing all the info so you can make your own choice. Hell, they somehow awarded a win to the Mustang GT over the '05 GTO, but reading the article I could tell which car I'd rather have.

GM is offering to buy out its ENTIRE US workforce so that they can hire younger cheaper workers.
A guy walked away from this with only bruising. It's a Mazdaspeed 3 in some race in kangaroo land.
Now that is impressive.
If I counted correctly, that's 10 flips. Roll-cages for the win.
