I love how Konami tends to stick shmupy levels in some games.
19XX is the only Capcom shmup that holds up all that well.
I'd say Treasure, G.rev, and Seibu Kaihatsu are my faves. Honorable mention to Cave, Takumi and Psikyo.
Who makes these games? Because they actually look interesting, these bosses have some really cool bullet patterns.

I gotta say Cave as well (though my shmup knowledge is far from extensive). The trio of DoDonpachi, ESP ra.de. and Guwange is sooooooo quality. At one point I had played guwange to the point where I could one credit to the last stage, a little bit further and you get a full life bar charge. Good times.
I liked rez but it doesn't count. Who made Giga Wing?

Treasure and Cave, but I'm definitely no expert. Can't go wrong with Bangai-O, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga though.
ESP Ra De, ESP Galuda, DoDonPachi, DoDonPachi DOJ, and Dangun Feveron (no it's no wheres near as good as those other games but something about it makes me love playing it) force me to say Cave.
I like shooters that focus more on long, elaborate levels than boss fights, which I guess auto-nominates Psikyo and Compile for me. I haven't played much of Eighting/Raizing's library; so far I like the three Kuru Kuru Kururin games more than any of their shooter offerings. My resume is also pretty thin on Toaplan experience outside of Truxton 2 and Batsugun. Any other Toaplan recommendations?
I'd have to say Psikyo, something about their games has always clicked with me.
Admittedly, I haven't played a whole lot of Cave shooters, though. The ones that I have payed are badass, though.

Yeah, Taito is fantastic. I should have mentioned them. G.rev seem to be the heirs apparent to the Taito shmup legacy, and I love them for it.

Taito and Toaplan are my favs. I just can't get into the bullet hell twitch games that dominate the genre today. I prefer the slower, old school style of games like Fire Shark and Truxton.

I really hate chaining scoring systems, so I have never been enamoured with Cave's games. Taito's RayForce and G-Darius are awesome, but most of their other shooters are pretty poor. Compile levels put me to sleep. Raizing's rank drives me nuts and their games have some of the most obtuse scoring systems on the planet. I can see G.Rev and Triangle Service going places, but each company has only two shooters to their name so I can't really point to them as consistently excellent developers yet.
