I gave my two weeks notice

So, I gave my two weeks notice to the company I work for on August 19th. That's Sunday. I gave it before my shift, so to me, a complete 2 weeks of work will end this Saturday, September 1st.

I told them this, stating this Sunday (the 2nd) I have a trip planned and now they are telling me I may not have Sunday off, and they want me to work until Wednesday.

I don't really want to fubar my reference here, but this management team really piss me off. One of the reasons I am leaving.

Is it worth it to no show on Sunday and just off them, or is there a way they could get back at me? They do know my new employer, although I don't think they would care either way. (my new employer)

Legally they cannot say a damn thing about you to your new employer. All they can say what dates you worked for their company, thats it. Don't go to work on Sunday, and have fun on your trip.

Fuck them.

Aren't you a cook? Isn't it your job to be all flaky and not show up occasionally?

Ya, I'm a cook but I'm usually quite honest and I have never called in sick here.
I've worked mega hard for them and taken bullshit like the next weeks schedule not being up until Saturday (that's right 24 hours before the fucking next day) and they can't even do me this favour.

Oddly enough, my trip is Sunday to Wednesday the exact days they want me to work.

This is 100% correct.

I'm going to my new job in 45 minutes. So after that, I'm hoping I have a clear vision that my new job is kick ass. Then I can kick the hotel I currently work for to the curb way easier.

Besides verifying your dates of employment and compensation, your future employer could ask qualifiying questions like, "Would you hire this person again?" or something along those lines. And if your previous employer says "No", that may count against you when trying to get work from future employers. It's my understanding that a future employer can ask yes/no questions (almost like a cross-examination in court).

Maybe it's because I lost my job a few months ago and realized the HUGE importance of having a good reference; I suggest gutting it out on your last shift - as much as it sucks and much to the shegrin of other TNLers.

I guess look at this way - you may never want to work for that company again, but it's your name and reputation "at stake" so to say, and by acting like a professional, I'll guarantee you that your karma and the experience at your future employer will be better off.

Man it sucks soundling like an actual adult (especially on TNL), but I've witnessed other people (and myself) falter on these types of experiences becuase I had a "fuck it" attitude; which really didn't help in the long run.

Well I just feel I've been so professional for these 2 weeks after all their bullshit that now it's like more bullshit on top of this. I could tough it out that last day, but look at a calendar.

the 19th to the first, is exactly 2 weeks. the 19th to the 2nd, is 2 weeks and 1 day.

You gave them you're 2 weeks notice. After two weeks pass, you no longer work for them. How are they going to tell you to come in when you don't work there? Don't stress it, you're good to go.

Everyone has made good points and good counterpoints. However, you gave them your two week notice so they were fully aware of when your last day was going to be. It is not your fault that the management failed at finding a replacement or finding someone to fill those shifts that they are almost obliging you to work.

You have gone the professional route and you should stick to it. You have clearly made up your mind about this matter anyway [referencing the poor management and your solid work ethic].

Enjoy your trip and be refreshed for your new job.

If they're shitty enough to do this to you then they're probably going to give you a bad reference anyway.

2 weeks notice is the industry-wide standard in just about any field. No employer has any right to expect more.

Besides, take into account that if your employer wanted YOU out, you'd be gone yesterday.

Seriously this happened to me in a similar situation. Bad management, I gave them 2 weeks notice, they didn't find anyone to replace me, and they were trying to get me to stay for another week.

I said "Sure, if you pay me $X (double) for the week." Since that was what my new job was paying, and I would have had to start a week later there. I knew they wouldn't do that (and this place wont) but it made me look like I was trying to help them out, but they were too cheap.

I so wouldn't have told them about the trip, I would have said that my new job started on Monday and so they would have been sol.

My advice: ask for double your pay to give up your trip, since you are doing them a HUGE favor. If they wont pay double (and try to get that promise in writing) then say you are unavailable.

I totally agree. I'm even reluctant to put anyone on the schedule the 1st week after notice because that's when they like to "disappear". I like to get them replaced as fast as possible. It doesn't really happen that often with me since everyone that is worth a damn enjoys working here. Everyone with bad teamwork skills gets phased out by the team.

New York's the food capital of the fucking world and he shouldn't have been running the fucking kitchen of a huge ass Hilton hotel by himself with less than 1 year of experience anyway. This is the truth. Having a "fuck it, they suck I don't give a damn" attitude only works when you're the one holding the cards. Talk to your boss, let him know the situation, see if you can work things out with him first. If not, then just work the extra couple of days, you'll get money out of it anyway.

And in the future, learn from this. When leaving a job I give 3 weeks notice - now you're going above and beyond in terms of giving your employer a chance to replace you - and I name a specific date that will be my last day. They have no case if they try to demand that you work after that.

First of all jonas, ignore all the American advice when it comes to the law. They mean well but they don't know shit about Canadian labour laws.

Secondly, I don't know shit either, so ask a professional.

Third, I'd walk. They have your two weeks notice and squandered it. There is no guarentee they won't continue to try and get you to work for them.

Anyways, I gave two weeks. The mistake I might have made was I said this is my two weeks notice and I didn't give a specific day when I was leaving BUT two weeks is two weeks. Which is up Saturday, then I don't work there.

I did not tell them about my trip, I just said I have plans (it's none of their business anyways.)

I worked my new job today, I officially start on the 11th (today was a look around and see the busy night). So technically I don't even need their reference anymore. I work at this place now.

Guess I really don't want to burn bridges, but even if my new job say blows up and I survive. I wouldn't go back to the Hilton Garden Inn because the management there have fucked me every way they can. I would rather go back to retail for a while until I could get a new cook job then go back to that place. (Management is a bunch of 35ish woman on powertrips with high heels. All day all I hear is CLIP CLOP CLIP CLOP, I'm like, fuck, what now)
