Yeah, you know its true but I still buy em once in a great while.
The best one I got so far is still Super Castlevania 4. Contra 3 and Actraiser are a close second.

Super Mario and Adventures of Lolo and Ninja Gaiden and teh og Castlevania are the best
Sin and Punishment is on the JP VC.
Nintendo too dumb to release it in the states until further notice.
First Neo Geo games announced:
Magician Lord
Fatal Fury
World Heroes
edit, didn't see Bacon's post *-neo
Meh.
DKJR Math
Bonk 3(I think)
Landstalker = hot sex.
But I still wouldn't pay for it on VC.
I never played Landstalker. Maybe I should.
And Bonk 3 sucked. :(
And it sucks.
I really think the VC would rock if they just threw tons of games up there and then put a shifting spotlight on certain titles. Maybe a slight discount for those.
If they're not adding any kind of features, I don't have a clue why that's not EXACTLY what they're doing, y'know?
Maybe in 2015, once they get around to releasing "Puss 'n Boots" or something, on a Wednesday, they'll figure that out.
Good ol' edutainment. "Big Bird vs. Black Manta: 1-2-3 Ninja" is out in a couple weeks.
Once upon a time, edutainment was stuff like M.U.L.E. and Seven Cities of Gold and The Robot Odyssey. What happened?
Donkey Kong Jr. Math went back to the past so it could come out in the future to teach you to know better.
...
?
That argument will never go away Yellerdog. Think of it like this-I have those old systems and those old games. What I don't have is unlimited space and TVs to keep everything hooked up. So with the convenience of the Virtual Console (or anything like it) I can have them again for a small fee and not have to worry about dusting off the old stuff. I can easily afford to waist a few bucks here and there for roms so what exactly is the issue?
Nonsense limited availability is the only issue. I like the concept well enough, but the slow drip shit has no value to the consumer.
It just gets me when people are like "OMG Bayou Billy is out! FINALLY!" like it's this new thing, and somehow more special because of a staggered re-release. People have fallen for the VC release setup hook, line, and sinker.
Seriously. I do like how games are getting re-released on VC but I don't see the point in waiting for whatever bone they'll throw you. If you really love classic games and don't want to emulate on PC, then you're better off buying the old consoles. They don't take up that much space.
You can't be serious Neo. At my gaming TV I have my 360, Wii, and PS2. How many more systems do I really need attached to one TV when I can get the stuff on VC or Live Arcade? I don't have a problem waiting for them to release the roms so what is all the fuss when I get excited about a release?
With the Wii alone I don't have a need to hook up my N64,SNES,Genesis, TG-16, or my NES. If there is a game that I just can't wait to play I'll hook one up to play it. Until then I'm just fine with the slow trickle releases. Let's not forget the battery issues that come with those old carts that are now a thing of the past with the VC.
I hear ya about having only a few systems hooked up at a time. My point is that if you're really dying to play a game, temporarily hooking up a 16-bit system is better option than waiting several months or years for a VC release. If you don't mind waiting, that's cool.
... assuming the game is released at all.
I understand the convenience the VC represents, but you have to admit that this is ridiculously slow. I mean, months after Nintendo trumpets the impending arrival of Neo Geo games to the VC, they arrive first - on Xbox Live arcade, with more features and at half the price. Then, NG games are finally released for the VC, but only in Japan.
LMAO.
That's another problem I see with the Virtual Console's trickled releases. We probably won't even see half of the decent-to-great titles that could possibly be offered. At three titles a week, that's only 156 titles a year. Assuming the Wii will have a five-year life, that's only 780 titles total between four-five systems. The NES's library alone has more games than that.
The only thing VC does right is display all the games in 480p. Now I can play some of my favorite games without looking like total dog shit on my HDTV.
Yes Live does 720P, but I was really surprised the VC did 480P since it doesnt do jack shit besides that.
Sonic 3
Neutopia 2
Play Action Football.
Release lock on Sonic & Knuckle's please.
Find a copy of Sonic Mega Collection for that and a buttload more Sonic games at about the same price as a single Genesis game on VC, please.
VC is a joke, but Nintendo will have the last laugh if Sin & Punishment is released here. Probably my first/last VC purchase.
Well, sure, you have games like Sonic where there have been multiple collections published for much cheaper on a per-game basis, and whose original carts are even cheap and plentiful... but then you have things like Super Metroid and Neutopia II, where they've never been republished (officially) and whose carts usually go for more than the VC asking price. Sometimes it works in gamers' favor, sometimes it doesn't.
I don't know too many gamers are dying to play Neutopia 2 (might be a decent game for all I know). I don't think I am on a stretch here to say most VC titles are overpriced.
Just hurry up and release earthbound, so I can turn off the wifi from my wii.
The staggered release schedule is more profitable because games don't get lost in the crowd and because it keeps people interested. If you really want everything released at once you're better off getting the old systems. I only buy TG-16 VC games because I don't have a TG-16. If there's a game I want for NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc. I just buy it in it's original form.
By the way, if anyone here just recently played Neutopia for the first time and are looking forward to part 2 be warned, it's a good game but I thought it was a disappointing sequel.
How is that relatable? Music is constantly being made so no matter how much they put up, they'll still always have a constant flow of new content to publish. Are new TG-16 and N64 games being made?
You greatly underestimate the value of the word 'new' in marketing. It has an unparalleled power over the consumer. Look at sales in almost any format and compare new releases' sales to catalog releases' sales, it's night and day. "Spotlighting" old releases bumps them up a little, but not anywhere near new release levels.
I'm quite certain that Nintendo's strategy is the best decision from a business standpoint.
Libraries. Most iTunes content, aside from "hot new singles", is from music libraries. Even if you keep the "weekly spotlight" format, there's tons of games that don't warrant that treatment. Are new Nirvana songs being made? No, but you can tap into a lot of nostalgia around the prior releases that are already available with spotlighting and special deals. 99% of iTunes is "old shit", on demand. Which is what I'd like to see out of VC.
But nearly ALL of this shit is catalog releases anyway. I appreciate "new", but none of this actually is. "Yes, b-but the marketing angle!" No. Just no. This is all old shit.Quote:

I respectfully disagree, dear sir.Quote:

Under the current system, TG-16 games are selling well. You submit that this would be the case if every notable Nintendo game was on there? I greatly contest that; people by and large would load up on the mainline Nintendo games to the exclusion of all else.
The way it is now, people are far more likely to buy the obscure new additions that catch their eye, plus they're still going to buy that mainline stuff whenever it comes. Two sales where there would probably have only been one. You cannot possibly argue that's not better business.
I 100% agree with Bacon. I would really love to have access to everything at once but he is right about this.
They are all new-old shit, overpriced to boot. Although I agree with Bacon on the release.
I think limiting the number of games can have a negative effect on obscure stuff, too. Nintendo probably has control over the frequency of releases for the other companies. Sega, wanting to compete, is going to mostly stick to its popular Genesis games since they have to limit and trickle them out. This gives them little incentive to put SMS games on the VC.
With good resaon. TG-16 games are largely horrible. A spotlight system would help this, however. If you point out "Blazing Lasers", people will buy it. It still sucks.
I can, because having more to buy would mean, ah, people are buying more. You'd get a higher frequency of impulse buys on a wider selection of titles. I'm talking about a constant revenue stream as opposed to things that hit once and then are forgotten forever. Amazon.com isn't just selling bestsellers.Quote:

The thing is, no one would buy Urban Champions if we have everything. With trickled release, some idiots will buy it just because that is the only rom available for that week.
I think that's a bit short sighted. The system stands to last at least 4 years, probably closer to 6 with the install base it's getting. At a rate of 3 games a week, that's 600-900 VC games to line up. Nintendo may not be jockeying for the obscure stuff now when they have plenty of cards left to play, but once their deck is wearing thin they'll be very welcoming of it.Quote:

Why do lots of people have to 'stand up for' Nintendo because it may be better for their bottom line if they do this and that?
WHO CARES ABOUT THEIR BOTTOM LINE
I for one am glad that the other two companies don't have this legion of followers because then the entire industry would be in the toilet. Instead, it's more or less quarantined off around the Big N. They can't even put out the best ROMS let alone make something NEW for once. How sad is that?
Who the hell is "standing up for" Nintendo? Because we can talk about why they do it doesn't mean we want it or like it. Seriously Joust, your trolling is getting stale.
600-900 games isn't all that much, when you consider that it's being spread out over the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, Neo Geo, and TG-16. I can understand the steady drip, but if they want to offer a decent library for each console, they're going to need to up it at least to a slow trickle.
You got on Xbox Live and spammed everyone with messages advertising BioShock's release date.
I don't think Nintendo looks at the VC as running parallel to the Wii's lifespan. Nintendo clearly plans on continuing the VC on as many consoles for as many years as the market will support.
Right, I wanted Earthbound at launch just like everyone else.
I'm just saying, people need to stop whining about a business acting like a business.
I dunno. Cross off the massive amount of licensed games and defunct companies' offerings that have next-to-no chance of seeing release on VC, I think that number would more than cover anything of worth, with plenty of elbow room.Quote:

You dont have to take drugs. You just need to be eligible for the special olympics.
If Nintendo's planning to continue the VC after the Wii is replaced, then it makes a lot more sense. There's no way it can get to everything in 4-5 years.
True. It makes me sad when I think that we'll never get the great licensed stuff like NES Batman, Ducktales, or Genesis Spider-Man and Castle of Illusion.
Hudson announced today they will start releasing Turbo CD/SCDs to Virtual Console. Neo Nectaris and Lords of Thunder plz. *-neo
<3 Neo Nectaris
I hope the CD games will be playable from an SD card.
Why complain when a company won't let you "buy" a rom? You're getting it for free and playing it on a superior platform when you emulate with a PC.
I know you mean liscensing issues when you talk about the above games, but really, its not like you're buying re-releases that are physical copies. When I had a Wii, I bought a couple games for the VC, mostly stuff I really loved like Punchout and Streets of Rage 2. I bought them more on a novelty level than an actual support level. People that are buying everything nintendo puts in front of them really should be shot. Those guys cause nintendo to be lazy and not work for their money.
This week's UK press release. Mario 2 JP and Sin and Punishment confirmed, along with two other previously JP-only games, Super Picross and Ninja Jajamaru-kun.

PRESS RELEASE: WII VIRTUAL CONSOLE MAKES A BIG BANG!
Press release supplied by Games Press 10:34 (GMT) 14/09/2007
14th September, 2007- Wii’s Virtual Console has provided a portal into the past since the console’s launch, allowing millions of Wii owners to experience some of the greatest classic titles from yesteryear. Now for the first time ever, European Wii owners will be able to broaden their horizons as a selection of great titles never before released in PAL territories become available to download from the Wii Shop Channel. If you’ve always wanted to discover some of the titles released in Japan or America, now is the perfect time!
Named after the Japanese holiday season famous for its firework displays, the ‘Hanabi Festival’ on Wii’s Virtual Console will see the release of a selection of classic titles split over three themed weeks, starting from today. To celebrate the launch of Super Mario Bros. in Japan on 13th September 1985, the first week of the Hanabi Festival on Wii’s Virtual Console will be Mario Week and will feature the classic Super Mario Bros.™: The Lost Levels™ and puzzler Mario’s Super Picross™. On top of these great Mario titles, Mario will also be taken to the next dimension as he folds effortlessly from 2D to 3D in Super Paper Mario only on Wii, which is also available in shops across Europe from today.
Over the following two weeks of the Hanabi Festival, Virtual Console fans will get to experience a host of special classics including the US versions of Nintendo Entertainment System action–platformer Ninja Gaiden™ and space shoot ‘em up Gradius III™ (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), as well as discovering Japanese-exclusive titles like Ninja JaJaMaru-Kun (Nintendo Entertainment System) and the cult Nintendo 64 blaster Sin And Punishment.
The first of this week’s retro treats is the 1986 sequel to the best-selling game of all time. Super Mario Bros.™: The Lost Levels™ was originally only available for the Famicom Disk System in Japan and expands on the original with all-new level designs, trickier enemies and obstacles, and secret worlds to explore. For the Mario purist this is the ultimate gaming treat, but make sure you hurry; this title will be a collector’s item and will only be available for download until the last day of the event on 30th September (all other Hanabi Festival titles will remain available after the event). Super Mario Bros.™: The Lost Levels™ is available now for 600 Wii Points.
Joining this great game will be 1995 Super Nintendo puzzle title Mario’s Super Picross™. This classic picture crossword game, previously available only in Japan, features hundreds of challenging yet relaxing puzzles. Each puzzle features a grid of tiles that reveal a picture when filled correctly. Like Picross DS, Mario’s Super Picross™ includes a save function allowing players to return to puzzles later and a selection of changeable background melodies. Mario’s Super Picross™ is available now for 900 Wii Points.
Also, separate to the Hanabi Festival, comes the latest Turbografx release: action-adventure Neutopia II. In the first Neutopia title (also available on Virtual Console) the heroic Jazeta destroyed Dirth the emperor of darkness. Many years later, the shadow of darkness is spreading across the land and Jazeta must once again take up his arms to save his father and defeat Dirth once again. Neutopia II is available now for 600 Wii Points.
With the addition of new games never seen before in Europe, Virtual Console offers users the ultimate retro gaming experience. They join the list of 135 classic titles already available for Virtual Console in Europe.
The fact is Nintendo is making tons of money by doing the least amount of work possible (dripping VC releases, taking so long to get into online gaming). Why exactly would they change that economically speaking?
I don't understand why the Japanese Super Mario 2 will only be available for a few weeks. It's one of the very few VC games that actually had any work done to it (full translation).
I already own the original cartridge versions of those games I mentioned, but I wouldn't mind seeing Castle of Illusion making an appearance on the Wii. The reality is that most Wii owners probably don't emulate on their PCs, which is why they're buying so darn many VC games. Stupid, I know, but that's what's going on. I haven't bought a single VC game, and I probably wouldn't buy CoI if it appeared, but I would like others to play it. It's the best Mickey Mouse game ever and my personal favorite Genesis game. I'd just like to see it in the spotlight again. :D
Yoshi's Story
Super Thunder Blade
Crappy Turbo Baseball game.
YOSHI'S F'N STORY! HELL YES! I' bought a Wii for this!
not
I'll purchase Ninja Gaiden and S&P.
It feels wierd saying I'm going to buy VC titles. Unnatural, even.
Streets of Rage 3 (Genesis)
Kirby's Avalanche (Super NES)
Legend of Hero Tonma (TG-16)
I miss Streets of Rage 3, but it might come to Xbox Live Arcade, so I'll hold out for now. Tonma looks like a good bit of retro gaming, and it might help in a future "What's That Game?" if it hasn't been covered already. I've never played a Kirby game beyond a minute and I'm not starting now. (Sorry, Kevin.)
Bottom line: no sale this week either.
Hopefully this will drive down the price for the Streets of Rage 3 Genesis cart.
I like how Sega does this the week after I sell my copy of SoR3 on ebay.
However don't expect this to do anything about the cost of the cart. You can get Alien Soldier along with Dynamite Headdy and Gunstar Heroes on PS2 for less than $30, but the cart for AS alone still runs at or just under $200. Shining Force 1 and Shining Force 2(eventually) are on VC but again the carts still cost quite a bit more.
Tempted to get the VC release but I'll most likely wait for the XBLA version. Mostly because it'll be about $3 cheaper and have online play.
SoR 3 > SoR 2 btw, shame the US version is a bitch due to the skewed difficulty.
Shit I guess I should have sold mine a while ago. $20 for a cart I never touch anymore is pretty decent.
At least now Sega has no excuse not to bring it over to Xbox Live.
SOR3 cart is worth money? Damn, I should sell mine. I hate that game. <3 SOR2.
I never got into SoR3, aside from unlocking the Kangaroo and shit.
Could be that Axel's forward, forward, punch move was broken.
Could be that aside from Axel, all the other characters sucked.
Dr.Zan and Skate FTL.
you just hate all games, admit it. you even bought Persona 3 and Eternal Sonata and I bet cash $$$ you haven't touched either, and that they'll sit in your pile of unplayed games for years. ADMIT IT!
how much cash you want to lose? I heard you already cleaned out the penny jar.
I didn't play much of SoR3 but SoR2 is one of my all-time favorite games. I always wanted to play 3 but I never really got around to it, probably because most reviews at the time panned it in comparison to 2.
Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat Spo. I loved part 1 and 2 but just never really got around to part 3. I think I'll download it for the VC since I have 1500 points in waiting and I haven't heard anything about it coming out for Xbox Live.
It has the best gameplay in the series; unfortunately, everything else is weak in comparison to the other games.
couldn't find the buried Wii thread so i'm posting this here. for the Mac/Wii users, Wii transfer has been updated.
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/25/wi...vie-streaming/
"Still interested in using the Nintendo Wii as a media center? Really? For the Mac lovers and Wii owners looking for another way to stream video to their television, Riverfold has released an updated version of Wii Transfer. In version 2.5, the developers have added drag-and-drop video streaming, background music for slideshows and the ability to use Firefox / Safari bookmarks via the Wii browser.
The program also lets you share pictures, music (as MP3 or unprotected AAC) and iTunes playlists. Sister site TUAW conducted an interview with creator Manton Reese. Wii Transfer 2.5.1 (Mac only) is now available for trial and $19 for license."
First Turbo CDs for release in Japan:
Gradius 2
Ys Book 1 and 2
Cho Aniki
Nice to see the Cho Aniki release, one of the Duo's better shooters if a little on easy side.
Sin and Punishment is hitting Europe too.
*EDIT* And after scanning Shmups, Gates of Thunder and Super Air Zonk are hitting in the US this month. *-neo
Super Air Zonk I can live without, but Gates of Thunder would be perfect for the VC. Any news on how many points TCD games will cost?
*edit* I just hope they don't use cripplingly bad compressed audio for these games, that could murder Gates of Thunder.
Also, TCD games will be 800 points. I can live with that for the good games, but there will probably be a few that I won't get that I would have picked up for 600 points or so.
I got Sin & Punishment, they've translated the menus and the training demo. All other subtitles are still in Japanese, controls feel funny/slow.
i will forever buy any release of Y's book 1 and 2.
