yeah...why no classic controller support? I can play original BM with it... =/
Isn't a Wii-mote basically just an NES controller if you hold it sideways, though?
The nice thing about getting impressions at work is that, while at first I thought this was a bit much, the farther I got into the day the more I realized that yes, it is a deal-breaker. I'm all over this if they patch classic controller support in somehow, but until then I've got other things to do.
James
Well that's just unfortunate.
Unless you have midget thumbs and are missing the top2 nuckles of your pointer finger, the A and B buttons are in easy reach when holding the wiimote sideways.
nothing fucks with the d-pad thumb though. ever.
By B you realize he means the trigger, right? Because it's a pain.
How is B a pain? Your pointer finger sits right on it. Slight movement of the pointer finger is all it takes.
Uh... what? It doesn't when I hold it like a NES controller.
How the fuck are you holding it? When I hold it sideways the pointer finger, you know the one next to your thumb, of the hand that is on the side of the d-pad sits right on the b-button.
The trouble in Overdrive is one Sunsoft put in there. To strafe as Alex or lock-shoot in the tank, you have to hold B. While moving around. The B trigger works fine in games where the remote is vertical, but like an NES controller? It's a bit uncomfy.
Now I think this is just dumb on Sunsoft's part. The original worked fine without a strafe/lock button, so why not design Overdrive in the same vein? I understand they may have felt the need to make it feel 'newer' with the addition of new graphics, weapons, tools, and button configs...but if you're gonna make something around remote-only, make it work for 2 buttons, 3 max (A button is easy enough to reach). Otherwise do the sensible thing and add optional Classic/GC support.
Outside of that complaint (although it's a big one!) I'm liking Overdrive. The graphics felt a little...like Flash? but have grown on me. I like that the enemies are real easy to see and different enough in color scheme & design that you can instantly identify what you're dealing with.
I really like that they added tools for SOPHIA and that the open-exploration isn't artificial. For example, I found the Harpoon before the Drill, even though the latter would seem like the first thing to find. I like that you need certain gadgets to advance, but there's still a fair amount of nonlinear progression.
I also like Alex's weapons. I know they're just the same thing as the original, but I never liked that there were no separations between weapon types in it. So before I'd have to hurry up and power through the homing upgrades to get to the cool wave gun, but now each has its own slot. Not too fond of the slow walk when strafing though...
Overall it's been fun for the first 20 minutes I put in, but it doesn't feel quite as tense as the original. Never feels like I'm one misstep away from blowing it. Enemy placement has been sparse and tame, and the caves are cakewalks so far.
I don't understand why they wouldn't make it "move around and fire = tap button, strafe and fire = hold button". Easy!
I blame Victor Ireland.
I agree with Yoshi for once.
Actually, he is going to discuss these issues with Sunsoft Japan and cite examples like Gradius Rebirth to try to get them to patch in classic controller support and changeable button layouts.
It's on the NeoGAF forums, but they are being a bitch to me right now and all I'm gettting are 500 errors. He posts there as vireland.
Edit: He asks what other games have been updated on the WiiWare service and when someone responds back with Gradius Rebirth he responds with:
More related to classic controller support than mappable buttons.Quote:
It's not an issue of belief, but an issue of being able to point to other titles that have had it done so it makes the case to change it more palatable. None of the ones I have had it done to my knowledge, so I just wanted a few to point to.
Also, he states there will be more remakes. When someone asks about Exile, he states:
And something else:Quote:
It's out there, but not next.
Possible Wii remake?Quote:
Thanks! The beauty of this Sunsoft/Gaijinworks hookup is I am in a position to play an instrumental part in bringing about 10x more games here than I ever could at Working Designs. Sucked that things went down they way they did with WD, but it really is true that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. But the key is, for that to work, you can never give up.
And speaking of never giving up, Goemon PS2 may see the light of day in English anyway. Don't give up on it yet. I haven't. :)
Anyways, that is enough quoting of Vic Ireland to last me a lifetime.
OMG, he won't let go of Goemon, will he? Screw that; Exile duology next please.
I won't give up on Goemon PS2! It's because i don't give a shit about it and neither does anyone else!
He should bring over Rent a Hero Xbox while he's at it.
No need, anyone who wants can play the english Rent A Hero #1 already, with a bit of creative searching.
-edit- Why did nobody mention how wonderfully mad Tomena Sanner is? It's a one-button game where you race left to right, and hitting the button makes you deal with obstacles in a variety of entertaining ways. Hit early and you just dodge, hit as late as possible without being too late and you launch giant robots, straight-arm a row of goons, Matrix-dodge a cowgirl's bullets before slapping her out of the way, etc. Yeah, there's only nine levels and there's no randomization, but each level has secrets to discover and online scores to aim for, so there's some good replay there for $5.
James
You could strafe in the original BM. Unless you simply mean there wasn't a dedicated button for it. I'll d/l the game soon to see if the B button strafe is that bad. Just seems like an odd shoulder button right now. I use the B button to choose upgrades in Gradius RB so I don't see how it's a huge deal.
What you said - the original had a strafe but no dedicated button. That worked well. Still, getting used to the B button a bit. Guess my gripe is a bit personal - I have tendonitis in the left hand, so playing for a while gives me cramps - it's faster in a game like this, where holding B to do stuff is needed.
Ireland is trying to get Classic Controller support patched into the game.
If you have an account over at NeoGAF, you can vote in the poll here.Quote:
I'm still working to get Blaster Master Overdrive patched (free download if you already have it) to include Classic Controller support, but I need YOU to sign the poll here if you think the game needs it (duh, but humor me and let's make this happen).
If you'd like to talk about how you enjoyed the game *except* for the missing CC support, that might be useful as well.
Still no guarantees, but I *am* working on making this happen, and even if it doesn't work out, a good show of support for the controller will help with future releases. Sign and tell your friends who have Wiis and have or want Blaster Master Overdrive to sign, too!
Thanks!
What the hell is up with Classic controllers being oos everywhere? Are they discontinued for the Advance (whenever the hell that's shipping)?
I saw them at TRU over the weekend, but I have had one forever, so I don't look for them regularly. The only reason they caught my eye was that they had them in both boxes and blister packs, which I found odd.
The only good thing about NeoGAF is that any news is posted pretty quickly and is all in one place. Otherwise that place is a cesspool.
The lack of classic controller support makes me wary of the new Sunsoft more than any of the other gameplay issues that may be in Blaster Master Overdrive. Much as I'd like to play the game, I didn't bother to buy it. The remote is a great pointer, but not so hot as an NES-pad substitute. I can't believe a game developer needs to be told this.
James
I'm with Bacon on that. I am fine with NES VC games, since they don't try to do anything stupid with A and B.
I'm with James on this one. The only games that shouldn't have CC/GC support are WiiWare games that rely on motion controls. Not adding CC/GC support is just fucking lazy.
I disagree with you, cocks are not irresistable.
Wow, it is pretty fun disputing arguments people never actually made!
James said it was a bad NES pad, we disputed that point. That's not part and parcel with saying CC support shouldn't be compulsory; It should be.
I didn't think it was that hard to understand. I said that I agreed with James and the rest of my statement solidifies my hatred for being forced to use the Wiimote when there are better options. And come on, you know that you can't shove enough cock in your mouth. ;)
Has anyone tried out Magic Obelisk? It's GameArts which has me interested, $5 is even better, but...I'd hate to get burned if it's lousy.
It feels sorta thrown together but still experimental/entertaining enough for the asking price, no Lostwinds more of a pastel Artstyles.
Fucking Europe got Ironclad this week. This and Rondo now, Nintendo.
Fuck, I've been wanting to play that one for a while. That shit needs to come out here NOW.

No date though.
Holy shit!
Unlike yeller, I don't make it a habit to say shit is out when it isn't.
Oh snap! Time to get some Wii points on the way home today.
I need to make a list of what is left that needs to come on VC. It's taken a while, but I have to admit the lineup is pretty damn good.
It took forever, but it's getting where it needs to be.
Any word if Rondo will show up on the other services?
It will probably show up on PSN... in Japan... since they have other PCE games.
Anyone play Max & The Magic Marker? Looks like Drawn to Life done right, but I've assumed wrong before...
Maybe if Nintendo actually allowed you to DL a demo for each WiiWare game, more people would buy them. I'm not going to run to YouTube every time I want to see if a game is worth buying. Gives us regular demos already.
Cave Story this monday btw.
Yuss.
The La-Mulana Wiiware port is shaping up very nicely, also.
I've played a bit of it. It's not bad but (at least to me) there's a disconnect between controlling the character with the nunchuck stick and a marker (that hover over the playfield constantly) with the wiimote. Each stage is broken down into sections (think checkpoints) where your marker fluid is depleted at each one so you can't stockpile the marker ability. There's also a very Little Big Planet vibe with what you draw since whatever you create has weight. Didn't attach the edge of your bridge far enough to the edge of the hole? Once you get to the short side gravity takes over, bridge falls with you on it. Very simple game for what I played so far. Wouldn't go over $10 for it personally.
Rondo is GLORIOUS. The werewolf boss battle is great. Love the little animation that starts it out. I've came to the conclusion that I prefer this type of game to the Metroidvania titles we've been getting.
I just got this tonight. I never emulated it or bought a Turbo Duo to play it. It has been alot of fun so far and the control is alot better than I thought it'd be. I thought it would move like Dracual xx for the snes. Thankfully I was wrong. The music is amazing, but still not as Godly as Castlevania 4. I'm looking forward to spending some time with this over the weekend.
Also, while were talking Castlevania, should I get the Wiiware Cvania based on the gameboy game? I wasn't a huge fan of the 68000 Castlevania and heard that it was similar. Any opinions on the subject are appreciated.
Yes. Rebirth is awesome.
Maria is the business.
I friggin' love 16-bit pixelated anime cutscenes.
Rondo IS the best of the series. Hell, it's the best of a ton of totally unrelated series.
That said? Maria's ending?
The Drac X PSP game was a remix of Rondo, but was the unlockable original the Turbo version, or SNES? It's been too long since I've played and don't wanna bother charging the PSP if it's the lame one.
It s/b the Duo version.
Badly emulated, though, from what I heard.
I couldn't stomach the awful 3D version enough to unlock it, myself.
Rondo is finally here! I can finally play it in english on my tv! Best game ever indeed. I need to fix the shop channel on my hacked wii so I can grab it, and also gift it to some friends.
I wonder if it is possible for someone to convert the Wii file to a Duo ISO so I can play it on original hardware in English with uncompressed music.
Rondo is the kind of game that I would never suggest playing first on a handheld, let alone the shitty emulation.
I might play that Rebirth game after I get around to the x68000 one.
well yeah.Quote:
I've came to the conclusion that I prefer this type of game to the Metroidvania titles we've been getting.
Agreed. I enjoy having a portable version, but it needs to be played on a tv with a good sound system first. My wife knows I'm playing the game since she recognizes the music and I blast it.
Aria > SotN
Dawn's Julius mode is pretty rockin' also, but Dawn itself is blergs.
Ecclesia was almost cool. It could have been something really special if it weren't for the overabundance of long-ass areas where you just walk in a straight line forever.
I finished the Rondo game on the PSP, both versions 100%.
It was well done I thought. Didn't see any issues with it.
I fixed my shop channel and downloaded Rondo. I didn't realize that they didn't translate it, which seems silly since the psp version is in english. Oh well, its not like I don't already know what they are saying.
I've always wanted to know what was being said in the intro. Is that translated somewhere?
Edit: Never mind, I found it.
In the good old time, mankind still lived in peace.
nobody believed, that a menace was about to come.
On the dark side of peace and development, existed and always existed, the evil.
Mankind began to decline the development, and designated peace as degeneration.
We are gathered here, to call the evil forces with our cursed blood.
We want, that they rule the world.
Smiling, we await the downfall of the world.
After 100 years, the evil was revived. He can turn into a bat, a wolf and fog. He loves the night. He drinks the blood of young girls and lives eternally.
The castle lord of the devils castle, the lord of evil,
Count Dracula was revived.
Wow that is an awful, awful translation.
For all it's faults, the PSP version has a very nice CG version of the intro.
Why do the virgins gotta be hot? You know if they look like that they're not virgins.
Lol at the difference in translation. The one I got was off YouTube, and it is indeed horrible.
Nice CG intro!
Am I the only one that has issues with the frame rate on the virtual console games? Something is definitely off. Even with Rondo, if something is flashing on screen, like the flames that hit the ground after the dragon's flame breath, sometimes if it hits at the right time you can't see the flame at all because the frames that are skipped are the ones where the sprite is showing on screen. This kind of frame rate problem makes everything feel off to me.
I don't see anyone else complaining about this, is there some setting that I'm missing here or am I just a bit sensitive about this? It seems like it isn't as much of an issue on some regular turbo games & Sin & Punishment felt fine, but most SNES, Genny, & T Duo games I've picked up have issues.
I've never noticed anything that would be out of the ordinary from regular slowdown from the original releases.
Cave Story is supposed to be available this week.
1 hour even. $12
I disabled them a year or two ago but I think I still have a Cave Story avatar! Will buy!
Advice to new players: Use updated graphics, stay the hell away from the updated music.
Rondo inspired me to get my Wii up and running again. After an hour of attempting to download the same system update over and over again it finally completed and I was able to purchase the game. It's pretty amazing.
I also finally finished up the last stages of World of Goo. It was actually easier than I remember. Fun stuff either way.
Would anyone be able to recommend a C64 game to purchase on the virtual console? I've never used a C64 so it'd be fun to try one out.
Isn't the US C64 selection pretty anemic?
Needs more Beam Rider. And Lazy Jones.
I haven’t played any VC versions, and I remember bVork having some issues with the emulation but, based on the C64 versions, I would recommend the Last Ninja games. I prefer the first game’s setting (old Japan as opposed to modern NYC) but number 2 has a lot less frustrating jumping parts making it the more accessible game. Keep in the mind that the controls will take some getting used to if you didn’t grow up with 8-bit computers. International Karate is great, too; just don’t expect it to play anything like Street Fighter. It’s designed for one button play. If you like puzzle/action games, Boulder Dash has aged nicely for gameplay and the simple controls probably won’t seem foreign.Quote:

Weird. I'll have to screw around with it.
As someone who missed/skipped on Cave Story until just this moment, I have to say it's been $12 well-spent. I'm amazed that one guy put this all together so well. The shooting is like Gunstar Heroes crazy pew pew, the exploring stuff is fun and makes me feel smart when I find something hidden. It's just one of the best games I've played in recent memory. Pixel and NiCALIS deserve my money!
Figured it out. Some games try to run in a different screen mode than how your wii is set up apparently. Probably only affects people with older HDTVs (ME). If you hit the home button and go into the user controls screen while in the VC game and Hit A, 2, and Z (must have nunchuck plugged in) it will reset it to what your wii is set up for. Fixed my problem 100%.
I actually might end up spending a few bucks in the VC store now...
