Moving to Boston, time to GTFO.

Just took an offer for a job up in Boston, on a year's contract. Going to be working at an animation studio in Watertown, so looking for places <10 miles from there, Craigslist seems pretty helpful on that front so far.

So, what's there to do in Boston? I've pretty much lived in the southeast all my life, so I really don't know what to expect here, besides actual seasons and horrifying winters. Any TNL Bean-Towners, past or present?

I start work on the 17th, so it's basically "sell everything off and go" time.

Looking at a roommate situation as soon as i get into town. Any neighborhoods to avoid?

Can't tell you much about Watertown, never been there except for that night I had to take the bus out there to pick up stuff at their Best Buy. Had a friend who lived there, she didn't have much nice to say about it.

I just moved to Brighton yesterday (apparently just 2.5 miles from Watertown), and I love it already. As I don't have a car here I'm highly dependent on public transportation, and that part's going to be a real drag as the MBTA is not exactly the most reliable. However, it's really nice not to be downtown anymore. I lived on the edges of the Common for 4 years now, and on the Chinatown side it was sirens and crackheads screaming all night that bothered me, and Beacon Hill had a strange creepiness at night and was eerily silent a lot of the time. Not to mention that the only apartments we could afford there were disgusting and ancient. In the last weeks of my stay in that apartment, the bug problem was getting to be out of control.

I like it out here, but where I am is very much a college student area, and I can't imagine wanting to live here for much longer after that. Lots of guys with backwards hats wanting to pound some brews and... bro down... or something. For at least another year, I can deal with it. It's a nice enough area and a nice enough of an apartment to make it worthwhile.

There are nice places and bad places all over. I mean, I was told to avoid Jamaica Plain, and yet I have friends who got a great apartment in JP. Of course, their rent's way high but the building is excellent and feels pretty safe, even if the surrounding areas are a little bit sketchy.

Avoid Roxbury, JP, Lawrence, Mattapan etc.... Grave said pretty much all I would say most of Boston is full college students, there is night life if you like clubs and concerts and what not, you got the sports fanatics and the ghetto like I said avoid them if you can.


Watertown I think is close to Waltham pretty boring area imo but not too far from Cambridge and Chestnut Hill.

I used to get off at Central and walk to Harvard and hit all the record stores in between on nice days I had off or was done early. I'd usually come home with a bag full of great shit at great prices. Haven't done it in a long-ass time... I miss Mojo. Found a lot of great stuff there.

I'm partial to Shino Express on Newbury St. Very cheap, very tasty. Plenty of good sushi here, but Shino's the one that won't break the bank and has not disappointed me yet. Wish I knew about local game shops... never heard a thing about any.

What TV shows/Movies has the company you're going to work for done?

Without getting into specifics, they've done series stuff for Comedy Central, Adult Swim, ABC, and now PBS. I don't want to start up any involved conversations about it online until I get started, though.

(Not because of OMFG MEGATON or anything, just trying to be respectful of the job in advance.)
