ALERT TO ALL TAC TEAMS: SHE'S HOT!
I just told chapter 8 to fuck off.
Rocket launchers, seriously?
And no, I didn't get the test of valor jam.
I finally picked this up yesterday, and I'm a big sissy so I'm playing it on the Acolyte difficulty level. So far, I'm enjoying it much more than the first Xbox Ninja Gaiden. It seems like they took a lot of elements from the DS Ninja Gaiden (i.e. streamlined/straitforward levels sans odd puzzles, regenerating life bar, and save points that heal Ryu), which is definitely a good thing because it makes the game more accessible and enjoyable from the start.
The first level was a lot of fun, and the level's design was a nice change of pace from starting out in Haybusa Village. The first boss was pretty damn pathetic though, and I'm not sure if its just because I'm playing this on Acolyte. Was the first boss a total freaking push over for everybody? Or is it just the difficulty level I'm playing at?
demo is up in the US store
speaking of chapter 8, boy howdy that will be fun with the claws (going for achievement)
Fuck that garbage.
Water dragon boss at the end of chaper (5)? is kicking my ass. Strategies?
attack its head, that's its weak spot (try and stay on that platform where you get the key, but if you can't just wailing on it in the water works too... I suggest whittling it down to a sliver of health so you can pull off one of the sickest OTs (Y) in the game)
edit: fuck the test of valor in chapter 8 (little crab robots and rocket launcher guards) is simply not fun with the claws :(
Thanks cka, that actually does help.
Wow TNL finally pulls through!
Aerith dies.
Thanks cka, got past that boss without even using a healing item once I figured it out, although I did not jump in in time to do the OT that you say is so cool (kinda pissed about that. Do all the bosses have one? the mid boss of the next level (Mr. BonePile) didn't seem to have one unless I screwed it up).
This game is fun as hell. And the 100-hit combo achievement is completely rapable, I did it with throwing stars at enemies who couldn't come any closer and took about 55 stars a piece to kill.
I still wanna know what Chux did to get those secret ones, though.
ryu runs up its neck and stabs it in the head (with the dragon sword he slices upward while running through the neck)
edit: the 100 combo achievment is pathetically easy on chapter 9 I think it is, the first time you encounter those fuckoff huge alligator things in the water, you can get into the little inlet on the far side between the shoreline and the platform leading nowhere and go to town with the speargun
am I just missing the timing on these things? I saw on XBL a vid of them killing the chapter 3 boss with a nice finisher, but I shot that bitch with arrows until it died.
and I seriously attempted to press Y when the water dragon was low on health, and I just happened to kill it in a normal fashion. wtf.
There is usually a dizzy animation.
So, I'm into Chapter 11 now, and I've been wondering what these Trials of Valor that keep cropping up in conversation are. I keep coming across these stone configurations that I assumed were teleporter spots like in the previous game, to be activated later, but now I think they're for the Trials.
I looked it up, apparently there's some Rod of Trials you were supposed to get in Chapter 2 or something, ouch. I'm sure glad they made that optional. Next play through I guess.
Also, Chapter 6 & 7 were awesome and completely overshadowed the game's downfalls, but 8 (if that's the jungle one) was total bullshit. The next few have been fine so far, but now I'm gun-shy of another stinker like that.
The Chapter 14 boss after the priest dude, the one with the ball in his stomach is driving me insane.
I'll shoot him in the head and deal some damage, but not a whole lot. I'll kill the falling skulls for health, but they're still a pain. Do I ever attack the orb or get to use melee? And sometimes I'll think that a wave of skulls is done, but they keep coming. awefkasdv
going up the inside of the mountain? hit its head, and then shoot its gut with a charged arrow when it's glowing blue
watch out for vomit chunks
huh, thanks. I wrote off hitting the gut since it seems like half my shots there bounced off.
I enjoyed the South America chapter, and I've enjoyed all of the chapters so far. The Chapter 10 Rain of blood was an absolutely spectacular surprise. That is some seriously scary shit, and if you really try to empathize with Ryu (lol) it is really some creepy stuff.
Another one of my favorite aspects of the first game that was punched up were the little bits of journals and things to read you'd find throughout the game. Easily my favorites have been the information and details on weapons that you receive. The flails were the best. "When asked his opinion on the flails, Ryu stated: Not bad."
Man, fuck this boss.
I'd be better off if I had more than one small healing item.
Recently picked up DMC4 which prompted a purchase of Ninja Gaiden 2. Seriously though - am I busted or something? I'm on Chapter whicheveronehastheskeletondudeboss and fucking 'a. I seem to have the worst of times countering, positioning Ryu to stay out of the middle of nastiness and combos? Forget about it. As soon as I string anything over 5 hits, some other little jackass beats Ryu up.
Dammit all - I just want to get better, but I can't think of what I could do to improve my gameplay.
lol, Bazooka troops on the first level in Mentor mode.
Finally picked it up today, just finished the first stage, playing on Way of the Warrior because I'm not a pussy.
The camera really does get frustrating on the higher difficulties, but I'm still loving it.
Hey guys, I have a question.
I'm not playing NGII on my personal Xbox 360; I'm playing it on a friend's with my harddrive attached. Is the save data paired to the box you play on like NG, NGB, DOA3, DOAU, and other Team Ninja games were, or can I continue where I left off by swapping back my HDD once my Xbox returns from the repair center?
It would be kinda booty if its the former what with the RRODs and everything.
Not sure, I haven't tried to move the data to a different memory card.
Chapter 10.
lol elizabet is such a pushover, also lol naked bloody chicks.
yay. Just got back from a camping and fishing weekend. Now to get past Ch2. LOL
Dear Itagaki:
Just because you can fit 100+ enemies on the screen doesn't mean the zboz can handle it.
Cut that shit out.
This game's got the flu! It's so sick!
I thought the stairs of slowdown were actually pretty cool, given how weak they all were. I agree with the bosses, though. They just needed a little more HP; I feel like I kinda slid by most battles.
The only boss I really had issues with were the 2 dragons, and that was because you had to use the fucking bow, and the camera was atrocious.
I didn't think I was going to complain about the camera, since I didn't have a problem with the camera in Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black, but the LB button in this game is broken as fuck. Instead of resetting the camera behind Ryu like before, it makes Ryu face whatever direction the camera is facing. That's completely useless because pushing "up" does the exact same thing.
Right trigger puts the camera behind you.
Tried the demo tonight, it's a blast.
*smh at this dude getting mad when pressing the wrong button*
So I finished the game. It definitely delivers. The bosses that I thought were mediocre, while never actually *powerful* ended up being pretty likable and cool at the end. Both Volf and Elizabeth had spectacular second intros.
I finished the game on Warrior last night. I always seem to get caught unexpectedly in boss sequences with little to no healing items, which makes some of them frustrating. Everyone seems to find the bosses easy, but I actually had to die a lot in trial in error to learn to best way to beat them, especially since some I'd go in with half a life bar and no items. The final sequence I was definitely not prepared for, and it was kind-of garbage to boot. On another play through, I wonder if things will go much smoother knowing what to expect, but overall, each fight felt like a race to exploit the boss, rather than learn how to effectively avoid and dismantle it (which I felt was the pattern in NG). Fighting bosses with minions is a nice touch, but usually result in off-screen projectile hell.
My thoughts after the first playthrough:
+ Just amazing combat. I think I'll go for the 1-weapon achievements. All the weapons have huge movesets and diverse enough strategies to make it an interesting, legitimately fun challenge. I was still learning new things by the end, and I think focusing on just one weapon will reveal all the nuances the designers considered (for instance, I found you can cancel tonfa combas with a special dash). I didn't really take time to learn the wall variants for juggles either, but they looked awesome when I did them by accident. The weapon-specific UTs and OTs are pure crack-icing; they must have some giant brain in a vat doing the animation at Team Ninja.
+ Graphics are sweet and the increasingly surreal settings, while expected, were executed nicely.
+ Revisiting Ryu's village was a nice touch.
+ Plenty of boss fights, without too much (DMC4) recycling, and when they did it at least made sense in the story, and it was in a new environment.
+ Clocktower sequence was cool, reminding me of Castlevania
+ Some great enemy designs and attacks. The tactical swat-dudes that bust crazy Snake-Eyes moves on you are probably my favorite...next being the ninja dogs that can air juggle you and throw incendiary shuriken with their mouths.
+ Many on-screen enemies at once. Too many next-gen games cop out by giving enemies tons of hit points to make up for their engine being unable to handle so many on screen.
- Bad camera. Makes certain boss fights flat-out stupid. Huge enemies can get between you and camera (i.e. winged demons) blocking out everything. No way to move camera higher. Unable to move camera during UT or OT animations (the only time you really have adjust it) to plan next action. Not a gamebreaker, but disappointing.
- Buggy game. Very sad for a game with so much polish in other areas. I had creatures get stuck "popping" in terrain, vanishing, glitching...sometimes a creature I need to kill to open a door gets stuck, outside of range, in a wall...I've had Ryu get flung outside the world geometry, and the camera get stuck during non-interactive sequences (like when a centaur throws me). Accessing the quick menu wouldn't always pause the game and resulted in some deaths.
- Too many off-screen projectiles. Especially the incendiary shuriken. There's ways around it (mostly keeping to animations that can't be interrupted), but challenge or not, I don't find it fun.
- Bow-related fights suck hard. Especially when Ryu auto-aims a direction contrary to the way I was facing.
- Underwater sequences are poorly designed. Most just involve firing the spear gun from one spot until everything's dead. The stick seems overly sensitive when swimming too.
- Sonia is just a dumb slut that adds absolutely nothing to the story and looks creepy to boot.
- As I predicted, they shied away from having any overtly female enemies (which is fine). However, strapping some tits on those scorpion things is retarded, and the robot manikins were silly and felt out of place. Elizebet's boss intro and boss design were nice though.
While there are some subtle things that I disagree on, I think that you nailed the game to the wall in your observations.
I was especially disappointed by the lack of female enemies too. And yeah, Rachel > Sonia. Never thought I'd be saying Rachel > anything, but here I am.
Are you saving your conclusion for a subsequent playthrough? It sounds like you still prefer Black/Sigma to 2 but still don't view this as a DMC4 sized disappointment. I'm only on the verge of completing stage 4 (I move slow compared to you guys) and I've wavered in my stance just a little bit but still favor this over Sigma. I will not disown Sigma, however.
Well, the bottom line is no other game allows you do so much rad ninja stuff, so I really like the game no matter how many little issues crop up.
I actually got bored and never finished DMC3, but I beat DMC4 a couple times; not sure what happened there. I might be a graphics whore? I definitely had more fun with NG2 than DMC4 though.
I also never played Sigma, thought it was a just a hi-res Black for PS3. I think NG was a better overall package than NG2. I liked the level layouts, enemy variety, boss theory, and pacing better in NG. However, NG2's highs are pretty fucking rad, and beyond anything I remember from the first one. Since it's so uneven, I don't know how to quantify it as a play experience compared to the first, or if I'd bother, since obviously everyone should just play both.
So, yeah, I wanted to play through again, see how it changes. I played a little on Mentor mode, not sure I'm ready for that, seems more frustrating then fun (and I beat NG on Master Ninja).
edit: Randomly, weren't there some Rachel-only levels in Sigma? I was hoping there'd be a hidden character in NG2 or something, even just a model swap would be fun (especially if it's someone with breast physics). When I bought the game, they gave me a code for some hidden costumes, Fiend-Ryu (and 4 color variants)...it looks pretty good, and I like how they use your different costumes in the cutscenes. Rachel Mode with a new axe moveset to work with the combat engine would have been sick. A Sonia Mode (if they must) would have been fine...just give her all of Ryu's moves, but substitute his Ninpo with a rocket launcher attack.
chapter 7 is getting freaking frustrating.
I'm pretty positive that this is intentional. The game doesn't want you getting to your health items if you're low and just got caught by, say, a long-animation throw. Seems like you can only get to the menu in moments where you're free to attack, and anything else will queue it up and pause the game when it's "fair". The start menu in both this and NG/NGB behave the same, I think.Quote:
Accessing the quick menu wouldn't always pause the game and resulted in some deaths.
Tain is right, it's the same as in the 1st game when you couldn't pause when taking damage from throws except for a few certain moments inbetween. You have to just accept that the game isn't gonna let you heal if you get caught slipping by a boss/enemy.
No, I figured out you can't do it during grab animations (although there were times when I couldn't discern any reason why it wouldn't, like I'm just taking normal hits or w/e). There were times when I'd hit the dpad to switch weapons or something and I'd stop blocking (because normally it instantly pauses if you hit the dpad, baring your'e not being grabbed) but the weapon menu wouldn't come up for a few seconds. I assume it's because the game is absolutely scrounging for memory (you might have noticed the game loads again if you switch weapons right after a reload).
edit: Tain, the "queuing until you're free to attack" idea makes sense. That may actually be what's happening, I'll have to keep an eye on it.
Level 8 hates me lol. I also got my 100 hits combo achieve way back on Lvl 6 or 5.
Test of Valor 1 on mentor. :|
Alternatively, if you don't want to do it by sucking, you can get it by essence spamming with the Kusari-Gama on the beetles in the South America, and simultaneously rack up about 200,000 essence.
I will have to remember that.
Essence spamming? I assume that's where you just keep using the essence from a kill to perform an UT on another group, then use their using to do another UT on the next group. In the first game I remember doing huge combos with the wood nunchaku on some bone dragon that you could respawn quickly.
I'm loving this game. Started late last night and I'm on chapter 7 now.
I'm absolutely loving the dual swords and haven't even bothered to learn a single button combo. I love mashing.
The only thing that has really annoyed me so far is projectiles during battles. I break off to kill archers just because they annoy the shit out of me. Also, water sucks. But water sucks in every game. Ever.
Started a week later than you guys, so I'm only up to Chapter 5. Which of the weapons after powering them up do you guys enjoy using? I think the Lunar Staff at Level 3 is awesome, and I'm starting to appreciate Level 3 two swords. Not a fan of the talons, so I didn't bother powering those up. How's Level 3 Kusari-Gama and Level 3 tonfas?
I haven't really explored the weapons that well, on my second playthrough and just using the Dragon Sword for now. But what I gleaned so far:
The staff is definitely my go-to weapon for any sort of crowd control situation, but just really strong on single enemies as well...lacks an air dash, and the insta-UT options are kinda awkward for me, but the effectiveness of the UT makes up for it. Seems really easy to stun enemies.
I don't care for the Scythe, but its air combo is pure cheese on certain bosses. There's nothing really wrong with it...plays pretty much like the axe/daigoro from NG1. Sucky UT though, just a big single hit.
After the staff, the 2x Swords was my preferred weapon. Lacks the triple Flying Swallow of the DS, but seems better in almost any other way. Its UT will seek new targets much better than the DS, and it seems to stun more frequently.
Tonfas are great, IMO. Same style of play as the Flails, but the ability to cancel any combo with a special dash opens up some cool possibilities and defensive options. I don't remember if it has a very good "leg chop" attack though (like the DS xxy->y). There's a lot of neat tricks in the movelist too, but some are unorthodox so I wouldn't consider it very spammable.
The other weapons I only used periodically, not much to say yet. I think the Claws have some great potential, however, because so many of the strings make Ryu teleport around, which seems like a great way to avoid incoming projectiles and back attacks. Also, when you get the windmill shuriken, remember that you can charge it up too, making for some sweet Krull-esque multi-kill combo finishers.
the claws are the best period
nothing says "holy shit that's GOD LIKE" like a flying swallow into izuna drop
edit: or the forward+Y de-legger
double swords imo.
The final boss is kicking my ass hardcore.
I hate using fucking arrows.
All of the weapons have quite a bit of pros and very few cons, honestly. It just comes down to experience. I would recommend sitting down on normal (or easy mode) and just toying with them. They all have multiple throws and most of them have multiple UTs as well. They are also all very different.
The fan service on the flails is just ridiculous now. That fucking jump kick with several legs to the stomach is godly, not to mention his AIR SUPERIORITY.
The Kusari-Gama is my favorite weapon according to XBOX Live. I love the piledrivers, the instant decaps and the UT it has.
The double swords are the shit, but not too varied from what we saw before. The Lunar is much improved. The Claws generally turn minced meat out of any regular fiend or ninja.
The Scythe is absolutely freaking godly, it has so many throws and is so overpowered it's ridiculous. The free form with the Tonfas is true Bruce Lee shit. Not like the flails claimed to be in the first game, but actually letting you brake combos like Garou:MOTW at any moment.
Basically, you probably won't see every move in the game on your first play through. I still can't pull off the Underworld Drop with the Blade of the Archfiend
Just beat it with no health and no items left.
It was fun, but I pretty much play Ninja Gaiden as a button masher.
It's so far from the NES platformers where you have one attack, and now it's a lot like fighting games in that I suck at them.
The only things in the 3d Ninja Gaidens that resemble the old games are:
1) You're a badass ninja.
2) It's hard.
Don't forget that you can download some free ninja movies this weekend from the Marketplace. It's a NG2 sweepstakes weekend.
I just got to chapter 10 today, and the beginning of this chapter solidifies the fact that this is a better all around game than the first Xbox Ninja Gaiden...just WOW.
So far, I've liked every single level except for the first 3/4 of Chapter 8. The combination of cheap ass enemies and BORING level design make that level a pain in the ass. Its the only crappy level in the game so far.
And yes, being forced to use arrows at certain points in the game is the only other sucky thing about NG2.
Developer's fault if he can mash through, though.
I'm not talking about cans and can'ts, I'm talking about him choosing to do it. There's nothing wrong with being able to mash through a game on easy mode. There is something wrong with choosing to by my philosophy. With all of the great things you can do in the games once precision becomes an ally, it's a damned shame that people would choose to play by mashing. There's simply a lot more fun to be had by increasing your skill. The game was *designed* so that you can still look cool if you're shit on easy mode, champ, that's why his moves are all so simple to pull off. But it's still far more rewarding to do what you want to do, on purpose, at all times. So please, relax your balls, Taint. It's really oky.
I didn't button mash so much as use the same 3-5 lvl 3 moves. But most of them were all YYYYY, or XXYYY, or XYYXYYY or something.
So it felt like button mashing.
I don't like learning button combos to perform moves, which is why I hate fighting games and why I didn't learn many moves in NG2.
i thought you were classy manQuote:
So please, relax your balls, Taint. It's really oky.
I didn't even know Rich was playing on easy. Just that if he can get by while mashing, why blame him? As you said, it still looks cool.
Sounds like he played it like most people; by picking a small pool of moves and sticking with them. I guess he could make himself diversify if he wanted to, but I don't see what's wrong with just using what works.
That sounds awfully hostile for a DYLE? post. Was that really necessary?
he is to ninja gaiden how some are to marvel vs capcom 2
I've known him for a long time, and he's honestly one of the select few who I'd believe beat the first on master ninja
This is almost the Bioshock "you're playing it wrong" argument all over again, except Bioshock is easy and Ninja Gaiden isn't.
man... I had NO idea that there was a game breaking glitch in Chapter 10. <sigh> I experienced the glitch and now I'm fucked and have to do that all over again unless a patch is released. All that for nothing. I hate this game anyways so I won't bother starting it over.
In Chapter 10 there is a cave after a save statue that is filled with green acid and you fight worms and stuff. If you die there and continue you'll of course restart at the save statue in front of said room but the monsters won't appear...ever. You are screwed and have to start the game over unless you were smart (which I wasn't) and do manual saves on mutiple slots for each save statue. I just did the entire game via autosave.
I suggest you use manuel save and keep a slot for the beginning of a level if you haven't. Nothing I can do I about it except start all over which I have no desire to.
I didn't use auto-save when I played through the game. I did die at the part you're talking about, but the monsters still reappeared when I restarted at the save statue. Does this only happen if auto-save is turned on?
Edit: Can't you still advance without them showing up, though? You can't just run to the next area?
So any tips on how to beat the spider mid-boss with the Black Spider ninjas (god-damn incendiary shuriken) in Chapter 2 on Mentor mode? I got lucky beating them at the end of Chapter 1, but Jesus Christ, this new round is super infuriating.
I love this game. Razor get your 360 fixed.
I know!
I tried talking to MS about it last night but they want $100 to fix it. I have way too many bills on my plate right now to take on another $100. I'll try and squeeze it out of my mother (she still buys me six-packs because she knows I love 'em) but I doubt she'll bite.
I'm very close to just throwing the system away.
I really won't.
Hey Raystorm, it seems like Ninja Gaiden 2 has been patched to fix that issue, and you might be able to resume from your broken save point.
I actually started the game over again like a total dope and finished it too on Warrior difficulty. :bang: At least this time around I picked up a few things I missed and did all the Tests of Valor which I totally missed the first time around. I actually had a much better time of it the second time around though the camera is still one of the worst ever.
