Personally, I have no problem with people embracing their ethnic origins, be it through the names they choose for their children, the clothes they wear, the foods they eat, or the language they speak - so long as they remember that they live in a country that's incredibly diverse, and that English is the language that unifies us all. You want to speak Spanish, German, Italian, etc.? Fine, but please understand that the vast majority of Americans aren't going to speak multiple languages. While it would be ideal if they did, the fact is that there is no pressing cultural or social need for them to do so.

I could care less what someone names their kid, but I would like people to understand that they need to assimilate when they come to the U.S., just as Americans would if they moved to any foreign country.

Take this into consideration:

When immigrants first came to this country in their huddled masses during the late 1800's and early 1900's, they sought out to learn ENGLISH, live the AMERICAN dream, and provide a new life that is AMERICAN. They did not come here trying to reseed their Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Polish, or Irish roots - they all became American.

It's like merging on a highway - it's your job to match the speed of traffic, not for all that traffic to slow down and let you in.

It's not our job to accomodate immigrants for their lack of knowlege in the English language/culture. It's their job to adopt the concept of being American and everything associated with it.

I know for a fact that when I travel outside the US - I do everything I can to learn about the country's culture to which I'm visiting. I'll try to learn some of the proper ettiquite, language, and other things. Thinking anything else is just plain ignorant.

Not necessarily. It has more to do with domination than nativity. Take Texas for example. It was a land of sparse populations of nomadic tribes and a few settlers, the Waco for example. IBTN. As I said, the ideal thing would be for people to learn a 2nd language, but the actual reality of most Americans is that their daily lives have no need of one. As time goes by though, this is going to change. You can build all the fences and walls you want, but it won't affect this at all. By the same token, however, immigrants should learn the language of the country they have chosen as their permanent residence, so the whole "learning an L2" thing goes both ways.

This thread is very interesting to me on so many levels. I'll try to say some things without sounding disrespectful to anybody...

The fact that I am also an English teacher, at a public high school full of students from poor socioeconomic backgrounds (read: a school of gang kids), I am subject to numerous failed attempts at trying to pronounce some hideously uncommon names on a daily basis. There are some odd names, to say the least, and then when I do find a more common name it seems so hideously misspelled that it is difficult to translate it when I read it on my roll sheets. I can't think of any outrageous examples at the moment, but when I come across an outrageous name I am the first one to point it out to the kids.

Also, mothers across the world, PLEASE stop naming your daughters "Betty Boop." I've seen this name quite a few times, and its difficult for me to hold back the laughter. Thank You.

I also found the statistics on Black students to be very interesting as well. It just seems to me like there are definite cultural differences in the Black society (e.g. it seems as if black culture still holds onto being LOUD, and equate this with happiness and joy, as a result of singing the slavery songs to keep their spirits up in the bleakest of times (and I mean this with the utmost respect)). As a white male, I just find it very difficult to identify with this cultural differences (mostly because I was raised as the typical quiet and restrained white boy).

Moreover, on a school wide level, I notice that Black students do seem to be in trouble more often than students of other races. I work at a school that is 78% Hispanic, 12% African American, 5% White, and the rest is categorized as "other." Even though the racial population at my school consists of a majority of Hispanics, its sad to note that the African American population tends to end up being disciplined the most often.

Basically though, trouble in school often starts at the basic level of being loud in class because its seen as being disruptive to the learning environment. For example, I had a black student in class today who I had to walk up to and say "I'm sorry, but can you please work more quietly". She responded to this request by screaming "BUT THIS IS MY NORMAL WHISPERING VOICE! WHATS YOUR PROBLEM!?" Problems in school start small like that, then the kids get detentions, then they get suspended a few times, and eventually you will end up like some of the students I had last semester; in which I had to talk to their parole officers on several occassions :(

I went to school with a guy named Simeon, and the first thing I thought of when I first heard his name was "monkey". Then I went about my day.

When my father was doing his OB/GYN rotation in med school, he had an emergency delivery situation. While the doctors were discussing things related to the woman giving birth, she overheard them say 'meconium' and decided to name her new baby girl that. The doctors, my dad included, pleaded with her to change the birth certificate before it was final.

Meconium means 'baby's first stool'. It's when newborns shit for the first time. The woman knew this, and still signed the paperwork, legally naming her daughter that.

God, you should see some of the names I have to deal with on my attendance sheets. Here are just a few, and yes, they are indeed real names:

Err I dont remember the Irish being slaves to anyone in the USA, and basically culturally back in the 60+, the closer to white you were the better. They were contracted out to work about seven years but it was normal to work your entire life for the family that helped you come over by oweing them money through the local goods store. You might earn about $25 a year, but the tools you need to run your farm might total about $100 a year.
