Boston needs to start Beckett in game 4 instead of Wakefield, it's a no-brainer. He's the best chance they have, even if he's on 3 days rest, and that will set him up to pitch a game 7 on full rest.

The 3 day rest record of pitchers in the post season is beyond abysmal. I heard some insane stat that put their record at something like 21-33 and the team record that started them something like 30-55.
Pitch the rested pitcher and let the bullpen takeover. Learn from Wang.
Poor Owings. The blooper from the pinch hitter that falls exactly right, the error, and then it was all over, the single and the homer.
Huh.
If the Rockies aren't a "destiny" team, then I don't know who ever was.
The last postseason game Beckett pitched on 3 days rest was a complete game World Series clinching victory. What other pitchers did on 3 days rest is irrelevant (even though many have excelled). Beckett on 3 days rest is a better shot at a win than Wakefield on 2 weeks rest off an injury, plus pitching Beckett sets up the rotation perfectly for the rest of the series.
Wang's problem wasn't short rest (he got bombed in game 1 on 8 days rest).
The Rockies are going to have over a week off before the World Series; all that time sitting around hearing about how they'll get demolished by the AL team might fuck up their groove.
Agreed that the way that he, in particular, has pitched warrants a 3 day rest start (not to mention that he would be able to go for game 7, too, if needed). However, history isn't on his side. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Certainly true. I think that game was tied when he came in, so it wasn't a situation he was accustomed to.
Setup guys don't always come in with guys on base, and closers don't always come in with the bases empty. I do think that the guy responsible for getting the final three outs has more pressure on him. Maybe the mentality thing is overrated, but it is a factor. Many effective setup men simply can't handle closing.Quote:
Give me the guy who comes into a disaster in the 7th or 8th and gets those huge leverage outs over the guy who can get three outs with bases empty any day.
Definitely agreed. I was focusing on the next couple of seasons, and as long as their roles stay the same (which isn't a given), I don't think there's a question about which of the two will be more valuable to his team.Quote:
But this October? I don't see where there's even a question.)
Anyways, the Rockies having swept their way into the World Series is pretty goddamn amazing. I don't think the time off will affect them much since they're so locked in. They could probably use the extra rest, as winning 21 of 22 has got to be mentally and physically draining.
Boston better not throw Beckett, because they'll then have Wakefield possibly starting an elimination game, and I can't imagine that's what they want.
Say Wakefield gets pounded in game 4 and the Sox go down 3-1 - Cleveland will then have to beat Beckett in game 5, Schilling in game 6, then every arm available in game 7.
edit: I just checked, and the projected matchup for today is Wakefield vs Byrd. Good decision by both managers if that's true.
With the way the rotation would project you're essentially pitching Beckett on 3 days rest instead of Dice-K. No matter what Beckett gets another start on full rest, so why not use him? Wasting a free start from your best pitcher and giving Dice-K another start (in game 7 no less) is a mistake.
