Sega-16 = best site on the internet.
I think you missed the point. The new consoles have the power to pump out realistic graphics but many companies are focusing more on that instead what else they can do with the power. Games like Bioshock, Spore, Viva Pinata, and Team Fortress 2 have a unique look, great art direction.
I'm not discounting realistic games mind you, I think Motorstorm and Assasin's Creed have a great look, but for a developer to create a good Wii game they need a distinctive look instead of the losing battle to compete with 360 and PS3. *-neo
Guys, Wii's inability to pump out photo-realistic graphics is the very reason why it is great, not why it isn't. I don't want to be reminded of the very reality I'm trying to escape by playing a videogame, and I don't have to worry about that when I'm playing the Wii.

I'm not sure I want to escape into this reality.
I couldn't disagree more. All games require good art direction to look good, regardless of how realistic it is. Assassin's Creed has amazing art direction, and its not particularly stylized at all, its actually quite realistic (though a little sloppy around the corners I must say). Games like Wind Waker and Team Fortress also have amazing art direction, its just applied to a different effect to create a stylized world. I would actually argue that a realistic game has to have fantastic art direction, because if the art direction isn't good, the game is going to look sloppy, unresolved, and just generally cheap, which are all things that really get in the way of how "realistic" a game looks.
There is a difference between art direction and art style, you know.
