For that above statement about PS2 being better for the industry than the Wii - at the office I hear people talk about the Wii. People who don't normally play games. They are genuinely excited about and have fun with Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and those other games than are easily "love to hate". These people are not idiots either. They manage million-dollar deals and wrangle deadlines better than most Gamestop employees can handle a customer.
All this makes me think that, yeah, while the PS2 had the gamer's buffet, the Wii is actually expanding the market. However you'd like to view that is up to you, but it's not because the average "non-gamer" is some knuckle-dragging troll or bumfuck fool.
Which brings me to another thought - wasn't this what people were saying of the PS1? That it would ruin real gaming by making it cool and introducing people who didn't understand the older 16-bit and 8-bit eras? That platformers and 2D woiuld die in the wake of sports games and 3D?
And now the tables have turned, though the game is the same - now the sports-loving, GTA-playing, FPS enthusiast is afraid that "their" hobby is being intruded on by those who don't get it. Something tells me it'll be the same deal all over again - the market will expand for these new people and adapt, and the "hardcore" will become as niche as 2D, platformers, and all the 16-bit mainstays have.
And that's why it's unfortunate. Because I can see the fun in going from a shmup to something like GTA, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Gears of War, Fallout...but Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Carnival Games, Mario and Sonic et al is just the lulz
These are just either oversimplifications of what we have evolved into along with ass graphics or not even games at all. Of course, I'd just get a new hobby and drop gaming, but I like this one quite fine, thanks
It can't be a proper Nintendo thread without Hero coming in to lengthily justify Nintendo, repeat the same old demographic-expanding song and dance, and put quotes around special words.
Oh Christ, shut up. None of those games cited, along with their genres, are going away. It's okay for there to be a system out there for girls and casuals.

I enjoy my girly games on the Wii and my manly games on the 360, kthx.
I think that leaves the PS3 for asexual people from the future.
flOw?
I miss my 2D vertical shooters.
Then move to Japan.
