multinational oil companies and divest the second a democrat president gets in and any congressional hearings begin. World demand keeps going up, supplies keep getting divided out further between nations, the middle east is still unstable, and it'll be years before we confirm and exploit any of the new resources found on the article shelf now that the permafrost is melting.

Infact any company proving new resources would probably send that stock rocketing up. My worry though is the south american governments nationalizing the oil and booting out the oil cos.

Gold stocks are in a decline right now. -40% last year I think. I'm not sure how well they're doing so far this year.

Gold's been up pretty nice lately mainly as a defensive play against the continuously declining dollar/inflation. Goldcorp (GG) is a decent proxy for gold, or you can invest via ETFs like GLD and IAU. Funds will be flowing into gold before and after Bernanke drops rates by another 25-50 basis points on Wednesday. Gold's a trade, not a long-term investment.

I don't have the kind of commitment to babysit my investments. I know that's kind of dumb, but I need something with more longevity in order to manage better. Do you do this for a living or something?

I am going to go out on a limb and say go to Charles Schwab, unless your investments are 25k or above, seriously.

So I wouldn't buy gold. Certain mutual funds, index ETFs, or some apparently safe large cap stocks (i.e. GE, Altria) probably fit you better.
