Wine or No Wine?

Okay, I'm making some delicious curry and jasmine rice for dinner tonight and I thought to myself,"Maybe I'll crack open my bottle of Riesling. Just to have something to accompany the meal." Thought the better of it because curry and Riesling would be a weird taste, but if I wanted to drink it I could.
Then, I wondered about the mentality of people who go to Chinese, Indian and Thai restaurants (there are other restaurants in which this situation occurs, but the ones listed are in my own personal experience), why they order wine?
Has anyone done this, and how does the wine chosen go with such exotic foods?

I typically order beer from the country whose cuisine I am eating: Tsing Tao for Chinese, Sapporo for Japanese, King Fisher for Indian, etc.

Those beers are great choices! I guess I just thought it was odd that people got wine... Maybe it's just me.

You could go Sake when you order sushi or japanese cuisine.

But I mostly do what Yoshi does order beer or water.

I can't drink alcohol with food. Makes me sick. Ever since I ate an entire can of Hormel chili and drowned it in two bottles of California blush.

I drink guinness with a lot of my meals. Usually just a pint. It always works well.

Are all you having is rice? It seems to me like white wine would go better with rice than red wine so maybe Riesling is an okay choice.

Since I've come here I just get beer with everything. I think I've stopped trying to convince myself that I actually enjoy wine.

If you do choose to drink wine with a meal that has exotic or complex flavors, choose something light and crisp. You have to balance complexity so you don't overload your palate. Simple wine with complex food, complex wine with simple food. I think you hit it on the head with the riesling to begin with. The hot and sour of the curry should be balanced out by the sweet riesling. You can drink wine with any food. It's fun to find those odd combinations.
